A video game addiction is just like any other addiction. These addicts seek stimulus from their subjects and cannot refrain from it. It impedes on their daily lives, interrupts their way of logic, and has no real benefits. The major reason why addictions begin is because it helps them cope with their emotions. For them, it’s another world that is immersive and engaging to the point that they are entranced by it. Video games and the Internet provide a plethora of communities and people to meet. Since it is easier to remain anonymous on the Internet, there are opportunities to create alter egos. As harmless as it may sound, there are negative side effects that stem from their addiction. People suffering from depression have had their ways to cope with it. Whether it was drugs, alcohol, food, video games or etc; it is their way of coping. Unlike drugs and alcohol, video games are easier to obtain. They are usually on sale, many retail stores carry games, and most of them are now free on the internet. Video games are more lasting than the consumable coping mechanisms. Depending on what genre and size the game is, the playability of the game can range from a few to thousands of hours. This allows them to escape to another world where they can forget about reality. However, they could possibly do just as much harm than those drugs. On the internet, a person can become an alter ego and more. A computer monitor creates an invisible barrier that allows someone to do whatever they would want to on the internet. With the given opportunity to redefine their selves, impersonation or imaginative personas are born. While there are numerous reasons why this can occur, there is not much to prevent this. There are some interne... ... middle of paper ... ...ames into their products. Businesses are now contracting the leading computer hardware companies to develop hardware for their products so more advanced games can be created and sold via application stores. At the same time, mobile video gaming already exists. Laptops are slowly becoming just as powerful as desktops are. Portable game consoles like have been around for more than a decade and does not require internet connection to play. Despite being everywhere, it’s surprisingly not as hard to quit video gaming. For something that has taken the world by storm, video games aren’t as hard to give up. As mentioned before, there is a limit to how different video games can be. Like most hobbies, there is a point when it stops becoming interesting. For the typical human being, the repetition of doing the same things over again becomes boring for us.

When you think of children playing video games you probably think of a child sitting in front of a TV or monitor for hours on end. This is not the case with a lot of games. Now while there may be a fair amount of children who do this there are a lot who know how to moderate their gaming and exercise. Some medical professionals have actually recommend patients to play video games as part of their treatment.
First of all, “addiction does not happen by accident and can be based on interplay between chemical and biochemical processes along with psychological while the emotional environmental factors that include objects and activities addicts use and how they regard by gaming.” (Mcquade et al… 23) By this addicts turn gaming to reality changing certain criteria over social ways and behaviors. To start with gamers or players tend to lose themselves to fantasy games. Which is developing their own minds to think their character is superior in any possible activity leaving the impression of doubting their own physical features. In ways, games can influence the source of false romance. For example, when online players are courting other players to become a buddy on a certain game it is highly influenced to players to set values of dating in a virtual worlds or realms. The reason why is some potential gamers feel like they can connect to other player because what they think is they can score with the oppose se...
Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. As for the “waste of time” nothing is really a waste of time if you gain something from it such as
Video games have come a long way. They have evolved from the simple game of Pong into a complex, multi-platform, multi-genre, multi-billion dollar industry.
Game addicts cannot go on about that day without playing a game. They will spend at an average of twenty-four hours a week on gaming alone. Many game addicts forget about the everyday basic necessity such as eating, bathing and sleeping and continue on their games. Seungseob lee, a gamer addict who did not take care of himself, “played Starcraft for more than fifty consecutive hours at an internet cafe before suffering a fatal heart attack” (DAnastasio). The game addiction’s danger to health is tremendous mostly among adults and teenagers that are not under adult supervision. A solution to the game addiction problem would be simply prevent the person from accessing the game, but that also causes major problems. Brett, a gamer addict, thought of suicide when he wasn’t allowed to play his video game. He states, “At the time [I] felt anything had to be better than not being allowed to play Counter Strike” (DAnastasio). Brett ended up getting depression and started failing his classes. Brett cut himself away from the world and won’t even come out of the room. Excessive gaming can also “. . . induce pseudo hallucinatory-like experiences” (Clark). It happens when the gamer gets off the game after a long hours of playing. The gamer feels as if he or she is still in the game. One game addict claims to see and hear the zombies out the window of his home. These hallucinations can cause serious psychological and
As the time passes, technology is expanding and developing many creative ideas. Unlike in the past, nowadays we have computers, TVs, internet, and many inventions that have bad and good effects on us. Children used to interact with society by hanging out and playing sports with each other, but now we can see a big percentage of children who play video games for many hours daily. Addiction controls the lives of people, there is addiction to drugs, cigarettes, alcohol or gambling, and there are some forms of addiction associated with modern life, such as the Internet and video games. Most people think that video games are harmful and a waste of time.
Video games are not considered as a serious addiction amongst teenagers and adults, often being compared to severe cases of addiction, such as drug abuse or alcohol abuse that may result in the appearance of a decrease in the severity of the addiction. However, video game addiction is a serious matter and has unhealthy consequences for an individual 's life and their health; spending too much time playing video games can take a great toll on one 's physical and mental well-being. Continuing unhealthy patterns of video game activity for prolonged periods of time can result in mental health issues, physical health problems, and a decline in a social life.
Video games have been argued about for decades. Some people have argued that video games are linked to violence. However, new research shows that video games can be used for therapeutic purposes, exercise, stress relievers, positive interactive learning, hand eye coordination, and different types of patient treatment for people all around the world.
Video games are often portrayed in a negative manner because they are seen as having an "addictive" quality. Addiction has been defined as "A primary, chronic disease, characterized by impaired control over the use of a psychoactive substance and/or behavior. Despite the wonderful benefits games offer as diversions, spending too much time, to the neglect of normal life duties, and social development with direct contact with others can and often does happen. Clinically, the manifestations occur along biological, sociological, spiritual and especially psychological. Some psychological effects that affect the behaviors are failure to play outdoor games, difficulties in work or school, telling lies to everyone, decreased attention to personal hygiene, decreased attention to family and friends, and disturbances in the sleep cycle. Many video game addicts have strug...
Video game have been claimed as addictive, a waste of time, and a distraction. While this does apply to some people, others have found the benefits to playing video games. These benefits include simulating working environments, helping people escape working environments, and giving great experiences. Although these benefits seems to be beneficial, it still stands that video games are a waste of time in which other things can be more productive.
People who are addictive tend to obsessively go on online and follow up one of their role models or to play videos to create different characters in the virtual world. One of the mains reasons of why people become addicted to the internet is so they can escape their realities. People, who usually had unfortunate childhoods, try their best to find a way to become distracted with their own life. If they are not happy with themselves, they play videos games to create characters online or they obsessively update themselves on others that they wish they could be. Another reason why people become obsessive because it is a way for them to meet others online that share the same interest. From personal experience, my father used to have an obsession playing “World of Warcraft.” If he had the choice to, he would not leave the house and would play until he had to go to sleep, rinse and repeat. In a military family, it was common for us to constantly move around and for my father it was difficult in finding friends. My father would mostly play the game to find others that had the same interests that would keep him company. If my father didn 't realize how badly the game had corrupted his lifestyle, the addiction may have became more
Teens that are depressed are actually gaining assistance with the virtual world with a game that helps teens overcome their sadness by teaching them techniques to overcome their battles. Szalavitz, author of “Study: Playing a Video Games Helps Teens Beat Depression” in 2012 reports that, “The game is modeled as an interactive fantasy in which players create an avatar who restores balance in a virtual world by destroying “gloomy negative automatic thoughts” or GNATs. Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, seeks to educate the depressed person that this kind of thinking is not accurate or true”. Along with depression, decision making is really worked out during fast paced games. Teens or other gamers have seconds to decide what to do in situations depicted by the game. One author states that, “Action gamers responded substantially faster than non-gamers to dot arrays at all difficulty levels, especially tough ones, while detecting dots’ motion direction as accurately as peers did” (Bower, 2010). These tests have proven that decisions are quicker to be made with minimal to no loss of precision. In games such as The Sims, individuals have the freedom to explore their identity. They can make their characters look and act any way they want, have any career they want, and be who they want. It is an escape that relaxes people and allows them to be
Several years ago, technology and child’s play were not such as extremely developed as today. Thousands of teenagers have video game as their primary form of entertainment at home. The disagreement about violent video games is because they focus on several subjects such as violence scenes, pornographic content, racism and other resources. For many years, researchers have been debating if video games can cause dependence or not. However, an expert, Jack Flanagan believes video games have a really negative effect on a person’s life and even for children. Jack states that video game addiction exists, and can have the same effects as drugs and alcohol (Netzley 36-37). This shows that video game addiction can be like other addictions
Video games are becoming a part of everyday life. More and more people are starting to play video games more often and for longer amounts of time. Video games, after being played for long periods, can fill a void in a person’s life and people can become addicted to the feeling of having that void filled. Video game addiction is a growing problem in the gaming community. A Chinese father hired a hitman to kill his son every time he logged on because he refused to leave home and get a job (Evans). When combatting video game addiction here is a parental approach, a pharmaceutical approach, and a psychological approach.
