Discrimination is still a huge factor in our society and is present in our daily lives. In school females are told to cover up, not because a dress is too shirt, a shirt is too revealing but because it is a distracting for the males. In most High school cases, girls are subjected to unfair treatment. Many have been suspended for wearing ripped jeans, "Short" dresses for prom, tank/spaghetti strap shirts and for African American teens for their hair. While males are allowed to wear ripped jeans, shorts, tanks tops and can sometimes walk around topless. These incidents relating to either how a female is dressed or if a black teen wants to be natural and get punish for being themselves astonishes me. People of color are discriminated because of the stereotypes that surrounds them daily. Women are most times seem as weaker than men, too emotional and can be emotional unstable. Women are stereotyped to quit their jobs and have kids and that can contribute to the idea that they shouldn 't be working and so they are given a lower pay. Women can be seen vindictive and nasty when expresses a problem and can be ridicule for having the same persistent and assertive trait that a man has that is seen as good. Furthermore, Women are judged for job based on their looks if a male is hiring. A very qualified, less attractive female will be second to under qualified and more attractive female and female often have to keep up their appearance while men just need to smell good and have neat hair and clothes. Black females in the work environment has it hard especially because of the stereotype that we are loud, mean , obnoxious and uneducated. Therefore, because of these untrue rumors Black females are less likely to get a job that they are more than qualified for. However, in order for us as a people to overcome these cracks in our supposedly perfect vase we must stop the stereotypes. Martin Luther King once said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character" and why can 't we apply that to how we view a person. We shouldn 't let our judgement about a person cloud the way they are as person. We shouldn 't let stereotypes define a person work ethic and how we choose a person to be our husband/wife. We should determine a person on how they work, their strengths , their grit and how they can excel. This change of discrimination can not be easily fixed but it takes an individual to be open-mind instead of close-minded like those who listen to these stereotypes. In a perfect world, everyone WOULD be judged based on the content of their character. But we do not live in a perfect world and humans have always pre-judged others based on physical and cultural differences. These are the first things we notice about a stranger, and first impressions are hard to forget. Racism and prejudice have caused us to make dire mistakes in the past, but we have learned from these mistakes and have bettered our society. However, society today is filled with stereotypes and prejudices about people of certain races. It is evident in all aspects of our lives, including media, culture, and even the legal system.
Everyone at some point in time or another experiences discrimination; no one lives a sheltered enough life not to. As a society we need to admit that discrimination is present at all times and stop being so sensitive to how we are labeled or perceived. Pretending discrimination does not exists does not solve a problem, it makes it stronger. Until it is no big deal in the eyes of all involved it will still be an issue that no one is truly prepared to tackle due to the amount of hate that will then be heaped upon them. Dr. King’s example is also a tragic one, a man who preached love for all, equality for all, and a sense of the brotherhood of man, was gunned down by one man who didn’t agree with his views. So perhaps the individual approach will be the best for now as this shows us one man’s view changed a world and one man’s view ended a life.
Overall discrimination is an awful thing. It is like a STD, it can be passed from parent to child, or someone can become infected if you don’t watch out. Discrimination is also like the plague. It sweeps over a large amount of people, infecting most, and most don’t survive. Though today much of the discrimination is gone, just like the plague, but it is still there. Unfortunately for some people, they have to deal with people discrimination from others. Whether it be discrimination of one’s race, age, disability, or gender. Discrimination has numerous damaging effects to someone’s life. In Of Mice and Men the unlucky victims of discrimination also suffer from the same effects. Discrimination has always been there between blacks and whites. Since the 1800s where racial issues and differences started flourishing till today, we can still find people of different colors treated unequally. “[R]acial differences are more in the mind than in the genes. But despite all of the terrible things that have happened because of prejudice and discrimination, it continues to live on in our world today.

Today they have a law that jobs cannot discriminate on who to hire just because of their race or ethnicity, and even though that’s a law some jobs still discriminate, they just use a different reason for why they could not hire you. Other races have heard so many stereotypes and stories about African Americans and they also grew up being taught certain beliefs which become part of the economy.

Thousands of women have suffered from discrimination in workplaces because they are pregnant, disabled, or of the opposite sex. It is crazy to think that someone would fire a woman because she became pregnant and needed to have some work adjustments ("Pregnancy and parenting,"). A woman goes through a lot to give birth to children, and men will never understand the complications a mother encounters during the pregnancy. Sadly, males think that pregnant women don’t make a working hand, which is totally wrong.
