WHAT EMOJI TELL US ABOUT ENCODING They’re our punchlines. They’re our kisses. They’re our favourite way to share a lol. Emoji do a lot of work for us. But sometimes emoji don’t show up properly, even though the text around them comes through just fine. Why is that? What is going on? If you’ve ever seen this in a text or chat window, you have witnessed one of the most fascinating facets of emoji! [INSERT PICTURE OF TEXT WITH EMOJI ERROR] Emoji are an example of encoding at work. Emojis are transmitted as code! You probably aren’t thinking about the rules of encoding when sending a text-based message. But when you see an emoji error like this one [INSERT PICTURE OF EMOJI WITH SKIN OR GENDER MODIFIER AFTER] you’re getting a tiny taste …show more content…
Encoding is a set of rules that standardizes how we represent letters and emoji in a way that computers understand — binary. And because there are so many different programmers out there, we need a global body of rule-makers to help us all agree on how we encode data. Standardized encoding is essential when we want to communicate with other devices. Binary is just ones and zeros, right? We all need to agree on which combination of ones and zeros means “a”. And which combo means capital “A”. And which combo means “smiley-face with tongue sticking out” emoji. Since the dawn of digital technology, several encoding systems have been created. As technology has become faster and able to store more information, we’ve been able to develop longer lists of encoding rules. Today, most programs use one set of rules for human languages: Unicode. The global organization managing these rules is the Unicode Consortium [https://unicode.org/]. They continually add to a master chart of encoding rules called the Unicode Standard. This standard contains a unique identifying name for each character we type in our electronic devices. So far, the list has 136,690 characters spanning 50+ …show more content…
Supporting new emoji characters involves additions to fonts, enhancements to emoji input methods (keyboards or palettes), and often updates to libraries that determine character properties and behavior (such as word selection or line breaking). Depending on release cycle length and timing relative to a Unicode release, it may take a year or so for new Unicode characters to appear on phones and other platforms.” The Unicode Consortium does not require software creators to comply with suggested emoji updates, but they do filter new emoji proposals by anticipated adoption rates. According to their proposal submission process guide, Unicode’s homing in on ideas that are likely to be used by millions of people. They also aim for ideas that will likely be picked up by the leading platform vendors: Google, Apple, Twitter, Facebook and Windows. All of these organizations are members of the Unicode Consortium. Unicode also seeks input through public reviews, an annual conference, volunteer roles, and emoji proposal submissions from the public. (For more details on participation in Unicode decision-making, see Unicode’s list of members and their membership FAQ.) WHAT DEVELOPERS NEED TO
Another reason when using internet acronyms, there is a bad mechanism to use while sending a text or typing an email is a miscommunication. Text messaging cannot accurately convey the tone, emotion, expression, or even body language. Emoticons, like smiley faces and laughing faces, helps the other person know that you understand the joke and helps them know your feelings/mood that you’re
The code assigned letters in the alphabet and numbers a set of dots (short marks) and dashes (long marks) based on the frequency of use. The code used the English alphabet but they would make the more frequently used letters into the less complex dots and dashes, such as E or A. While the Less frequently used letters such as D or Z got a lot more complex code of dots and dashes. Initially, the code, when transmitted over the telegraph system, was rendered as marks on a piece of paper that the telegraph operator would then translate back into English. Rather quickly. But then the operators became so good at translating the
In 2005 the first Black Berry with WiFi was released. One of the first smart phones was the Nokia N95. It had WiFi, a touchscreen and some apps. Then in 2008 the iPhone 3G was released. You could get apps, use a calculator, check calendar, take pictures, call, text, take notes and so much more. Now our phones are very light, and we can do many things with them. You can listen to music or podcast, use social media or play games. Cell phones have also changed our language. Thanks to texting, there are many abbreviations that exist. At first, you could only type 160 characters per text. This caused people to start using abbreviations to use less characters. They also began skipping punctuation. This method became very popular and is commonly used today. The 160 character limit does not exist anymore, but text speak is still very popular. Emojis have also become very popular. Emojis began in 1999 in Japan. To save character limits, they began sending pictures. They only used one character which saved a lot of space. Now, emojis are a new way of communication. Some people only chat through emojis. Some people believe that this could be a new language in the future. Another way cell phones changed the world was that they were
We have to cross the barriers of languages and cultures. We can do that with a universal symbol to represent the idea we want to convey.
In the communication process that leads to a simpler way of communicating face to face. In this communication process and its components see as the Issuer is a person who wishes to transmit a message to another can be original encoder it involves selecting specific signs and symbols to transmit messages. “When letters are put together, they can mean so much, and they can mean nothing at all,” said Nora Raleigh Baskin in her book Anything But Typical. There are 26 letters in the alphabet, and some people know exactly how to arrange them so that they mean so much. Words, sentences, quotes - can show you how to live, help you understand feelings, and can stay in your mind forever.
Affect Displays: These are facial languages or gestures which show the emotions we feel. These are often unintentional and can be different with what we r saying. these expressions give strong hints as to the true emotive state of a person.
It was no longer enough for the 26 letters of the alphabet to function only as phonetic symbols. The industrial age transformed these signs into abstract visual forms projecting a variety of shapes to be consumed by the public eye.
Apple is always the first company to introduce new emojis. Everybody nowadays uses emojis while texting to spread humor and describe their feelings. There are multiple different kinds and categories of emojis. There are people, animals, plants, extracurricular activities, buildings, and different sorts of symbols.
The emoji does not have to be circle in shape, it can be any shape, or multiple shapes. The emoji does not have to be a face, it can be any object or design.
To conclude, Chinese writing is more advanced in cross time and cross-space communication in comparing with English writing. Furthermore, Chinese writing is more attractive and easy to read. Although a Chinese Character may have complicated strokes, each Chinese Character carries more information; shorter, simple and informative Chinese documents are made in result. This shows that the advantages of semanto-phonetic writing, like Chinese writing are more than that of alphabetic writing, like English writing. As such, semanto-phonetic writing is more preferable than alphabetic writing.
One thing that sparked my curiosity, was how all of the ancient civilizations used hieroglyphics or symbols to communicate in writing. Today, many countries and cultures do not. They use the letters for their words and phrases. In fact, hieroglyphics is not really used in any place. The closest thing is probably Hebrew and Arabic which were derived from the ancient civilizations.
Emojis is the small pictographic cartoon that shows emotions. It has become an integral part of recent day communication. Even marketers are receiving awards for “the best use of Emojis”. Emojis is the symbol that reflects the mood, worries, and ethos. Besides considering it as an entertainment factor, emojis are tiptoeing into formal communications as these days nonverbal communications becomes more predominant.

The written language and expressing ideas and views are more effective in social cognitive cases of the communication. a writing system is a well-organized and systematic transfer of messages. It can be either for the people who can read or the people who are visually disabled (e.g. Braille Script). A writing system can have alphabets, logography, symbols or signs. There is standard
When you have played your part in encoding then after that it is upto the recepient to play his part to decode the message. We should use such words that a reciever can understand without any difficulty.
