In the article, “Does Im Make U dum”, the author states how instant messaging has made us become “dum”. The issue of using popular texting abbreviations like, “lol”, “brb”, or “gtg” can either be an effective or unproductive way of expression.
Using abbreviations through texting are so commonly used by children, teenagers, and adults. Statistics show that children are younger than ever for when they are first exposed to mobile phones and text messaging. A 2005 ChildWise study that one-in-four children under the age of eight had a mobile phone. This number skyrockets to 89% by the time they reach the age of 11 or 12 (lovetoknow.com). Abbreviated words in text messages are very effective tools because it speeds up communication.

Some studies have shown that the language and communication abilities of today's teens have greatly worsened compared to previous generations. They've come to rely on texting abbreviations and other non-standard practices. Students nowadays may forget the proper use of English words when writing essays or doing homework assignments. Students are supposed to impress teachers with what they know and what they have learned, not downgrade.
First impressions is the key to building a good relationship, whether it is with a boss, a professor, or a peer. Using text abbreviations to text a boss or reply for a job interview would leave a bad impression. Not only it is unprofessional, but it also makes you look dumb.
According to a study by Achieve, it has shown that 34% of employers "were dissatisfied with the oral communication skills of high school graduates." (lovetoknowit.com) Another reason when using internet acronyms, there is a bad mechanism to use while sending a text or typing an email is a miscommunication. Text messaging cannot accurately convey the tone, emotion, expression, or even body language.
