Effective communication plays a pivotal role in nearly every aspect of both your personal and professional life. Having skilled computer email communication skills impresses friends, family, colleagues and customers, and creates a positive environment, while poor email communication causes confusion, frustration, inefficiencies and misinterpretation. It’s almost impossible for people to communicate in their workplace or at home without developing good email etiquette. The vast majority of my communication at work is done using Microsoft Office Email. On average, I communicate approximately six hours a day using my email. There are advantages and disadvantages of using email to communicate. Email is convenient, quick, and easy and you have a permanent record of your conversation. A disadvantage is you can often misinterpret the information you read which can lead to personnel conflicts. The decision to monitor e-mail is left to the organization that provides the e-mail service to users. These organizations can range from educational institutions and private corporations, to governments and non-profit organizations. Each of these different types of organizations has a different agenda and goals, not only in general, but also for their members-and more specifically, for their members' e-mail. While educational institutions can provide e-mail facilities to their constituents for the purposes of convenience, employers almost always maintain e-mail facilities for the sole purpose of improving the on-the-job productivity of their employees.

(p. 46) With so many people connected through social media and since businesses are dependent on people to thrive, they have been impacted both positively and negatively.
Most of my writing exposures are in the professional atmosphere. I draft letters, notecards and emails on behalf of my boss daily. Prior to sending out the correspondences I draft for my boss, I give him the draft to review. He makes his edits and gives the drafts back to me to make the changes and to send out. He once told me that my messages are too direct and I should add more ‘fluff’ to them, especially if I am sending messages on his behalf. Personally, I think when sending a message to coworkers requesting information or relaying information to them the message should be direct and to the point. I was told otherwise, and therefore I try to abide to the boss’s requests.
Digital communication has evolved in such a rapid time. Some say that it is bad, others say it is good, and other say it can be good and bad. In Gerald Graff’s and Cathy Birkenstein’s book, They Say/I say, they have a chapter that talks about digital communication. They talk about the pros and cons on it as well. Digital communication is destroying young user’s ability to communicate but it also is helping spread viral memes quickly, and bringing people together.
Email etiquette refers to a set of dos and don’ts that are recommended by business and communication experts in response to the growing concern that people are not using their email effectively or appropriately. Since email is part of the virtual world of communication, many people communicate in their email messages the same way they do in virtual chat rooms: with much less formality and sometimes too aggressively. Email etiquette offers some guidelines that all writers can use to facilitate better communication between themselves and their readers. One overall point to remember is that an email message does not have non-verbal expression to supplement what we are "saying." Most of the time we make judgments about a person’s motives and intentions based on their tone of voice, gestures, and their proximity to us. When those are absent it becomes more difficult to figure out what the message sender means. It is much easier to offend or hurt someone in email and that is why it is important to be as clear and concise as possible.
Teamwork and social skills are the cornerstone of functioning effectively in a business driven environment because businesses require networking and interpersonal communication skills with another individual. At times, meeting face to face is not applicable so online means of communication must be used. However, we, as human beings, are susceptible to misinterpreting information if all the details are not clearly explained. Misinterpreting information can lead to a decrease in overall productivity. As Chuck Martin declares in his article “The Importance of Face-to-Face Communication at Work”, “A global survey shows that 67 percent of senior executives and managers say their organization would be more productive if their superiors communicated more often by personal discussion. While they desire more personal discussion from their superiors, however, the top personal method of communicating for these same business leaders is e-mail, based on the survey by NFI Research.” The survey shows that even senior executives value personal communication as it can shed light on confusing scenarios and difficult obstacles. The outcomes of computers probably happen with in the last five years, give or take some. It had made people become in love with being in a virtual world and new people. That now in “real” life the people do not know how to act around not virtual people. In this report I plan to take a look at the pros and cons of meeting/talking to people over the net. In addition, give a few tidbits on what to do when meeting someone from the virtual world.
With the introduction of the Internet, Email, Fax and Voicemail it is easy to allow the computer to do majority of the work without too much thought. Think about this; you have a message or a lengthy correspondence to send to a client or someone in the office. Next, you use spelling and grammar checker to review the paper. Without review, one click and off it goes. Think about the problems that can entail from misspelling and misunderstanding. It is easy to rely on computers, but they are not infallible. Calculators along with basic math skills are a necessity. They should go hand in hand. The same goes for computers and writing skills. To communicate effectively you need to write and speak clearly, and technology does not always cultivate this. How many times have we used email to communicate with someone across the room? Dealing with different personalities in the workplace it is easy to insulate oneself within your private space and limit verbal correspondence.

While technology has allowed society countless means of social interactions that weren’t possible 50 years ago, and has allowed people to sustain long-distance friendships that would have otherwise ended, the fact remains that technology is still taking over human interaction. Ultimately, it is essential that individuals adhere to the pragmatic convention of the cooperation principle developed by Grice. As pragmatics is the study of understanding the meaning of words in relation to the context, flouting on an intentional and unintentional basis may lead to miscommunication or misunderstanding. Due to the nature of email communication, emails are vulnerable to pragmatic conventions such as the Gricean conversational maxims being flouted. Thus exposing emails to be a common denominator for misunderstandings, and a sound understanding of the pragmatic conventions may significantly cut down the number of incidents that occur.
