Examining an Effective Decision Making Tool What tools are available to assist teams in making a decision? In addition to creating an environment for effective decision making and reaching consensus on methods for making decisions as a team, there are tools that can assist teams in formulating and reaching decisions. Many of these tools were developed in the 1990s as companies working on improving quality and introducing self-managed team into the workplace. In decision-making there are many different decision-making models to assist us along the way. One thing with every decision- making model there are several decision-making tools needed to help narrow down the amount of information to only the ideas that are relevant to the decision at hand. In this paper we are going to examine one of the many different decision-making tools that can assist us in this process. The specific decision-making tool we shall discuss is for team-based decisions. MULTIVOTING In the decision making process brainstorming is used, by design, to generate a long list of ideas. If used alone this can become very overwhelming and unmanageable. Many of the ideas may not even be realistic or feasible. However Multivoting is designed to narrow the list or options into a manageable size for sincere consideration or study. It is not designed to help the group to make a single decision but can help the group to narrow a long list of ideas into a manageable number that can be discussed and explored. This will also allow the entire group to be involved and ultimately save the group a lot of time by allowing them to focus energy on the ideas with the greatest Potential. The following is an a model of Multivoting from the "Strengthening Extension ... ... middle of paper ... ...e Multivoting would be of no use. The second thing to consider is the number of ideas that were generated by brainstorming. If the number is very low then there is no real use for Multivoting, in fact it would be a waist of time that could better be spent working on the end decision. One thing to remember when using any decision-making tool is to keep the end in mind. In other words when working through a process, visualizing the end result is Helpful. We must also remember that in every decision-making process there are a multitude of tools to help us along the way. As the processes and systems used in business have become more complex, teams, not individuals, have become popular in many organizations. Teams are made up of individuals from an organization brought together to solve a problem, improve a process or implement a new process. “A major advantage that a team has over an individual is its diversity of resources and ideas” (Burns, 1995, p. 52). However, this diversity can cause conflict within the team. The success of the team is strongly influenced by the team’s ability to recognize the causes of, manage and resolve conflict.
Within the paper, both authors discuss how a leader or team can balance the need for open discussion early in the decision-making process with the need for unity at the end. By using an Inquiry style decision-making process, teams can openly express their own interest and ideas. The teams stay away from trying to persuade others to take any one individuals point of view, but to decide on what is the overall best course of action. This process allows the team to express their ideas without the bickering and fighting that comes with an Advocacy style process. The team stays unified and satisfied that their opinions were heard and put into consideration.

A work team will be defined for the purposes of this paper by a definition borrowed from Bateman and Snell (2004). A team is formed of people (usually a small number) with complementary skills who trust one another and are committed to a common purpose, common performance goals, and a common approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. Teams generally see themselves and are seen by others as a social entity, which is interdependent because of the tasks performed as members of a group.
Brainstorming is according to Galanes & Adams (2013) Brainstorming is, “a small group technique for stimulating creative thinking by temporarily suspending evaluation” (p.285). It is also an alternative way for people to find or create good ideas. The process of brainstorming should include putting any evaluation of ideas on hold because critical evaluation can kill creativity. Suspending evaluation is the most important part of the brainstorming process. Coming up with ideas is another very important part of the process, no idea is a bad idea, therefore it is important that you list all the ideas you can think of. Next is the evaluation, which is a necessary component of critical thinking. This is a very important part because you get to break down the ideas to see the good and the bad all while finding out about ideas you wouldn’t have thought of on your own.
Performance is vital in any business, so before acting on any project, a high performance team will have to create a thorough plan. Every team member should be responsible for one specific thing. For example, if one team member is assigned writing and taking notes and another member should speak for the group, acting as a spokes person. If every member is assigned a certain task to be responsible for; then everyone has more time to perfect that one job. A brain storming session is a good way to come up with a good plan that will satisfy everyone that is apart of the team. After brain storming; drawing webs, outlines, and going over goals, pros, and cons will help, the team figure out exactly what they want to do and how they plan to achieve that goal. The team members should know how important a project is to the company and stride to achieve the goals in a professional matter. Each member should contribute one hundred and ten percent of their input to the group to make the project the best that it can be. Every member of the team should be rewarded individually for performances, insights, and total input that is beneficial to the team.
Make the decision through the integration of ideas and data, and negotiation and prioritization of ideas
Working in groups is challenging at times. Other times it is very rewarding. We are so focused on life that we do not take time to reflect on things as much as we should. Being in a Groups class has opened my eyes to a whole new world. I have begun to question, explore, and even understand how things work. I even get how they work sometimes. Not only is there a process involved in making individual decisions, process is involved in group decisions as well. This paper attempts give insight into my reflection of my group decision process.
Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Teamwork is classified as people with different strengths and skills who work together to achieve a common goal. When a team works well, specific objectives are fulfilled and satisfied. Teamwork plays a crucial role in implementing and fulfilling a common goal in a team project. Each member plays a role and takes on different responsibilities combined together. In different stages of teamwork, conflicts and arguments may occur for as members have different standpoints which need to be harmonized within the team. The key to having an effective teamwork is to explore each member's unique abilities to motivate them.
The reason for employing the NGT in the last above stage was due to the fact that the NGT uses a more structured format to obtain multiple inputs from several people on a particular problem or issue and also because it prevents the domination of discussion by a single person, encourages the more passive group members to participate, and results in a set of prioritized solutions or recommendations (Sample 1984). We needed to leverage the anonymous voting of the NGT and minimizing the dominance of the some participants over other ones in the technical matters of the project through providing equal opportunities for participations in the NGT. Furthermore, this method minimizes the communication noise that is customary in other team creativity techniques.
