Tools and Techniques Paper and Presentation
What am I going to eat for lunch? What time am I going to leave for work today? What am I going to do tonight for fun? All of these questions are examples of decisions that I need to make. Decision-making is the cognitive process leading to the selection of a course of action among alternatives. Every decision making process produces a final choice; therefore, it can be an opinion or an action. It all begins when we need to do something, but we do not know what. Decision making is therefore a reasoning process which can be rational or irrational. (Wikipedia, 2007)
When we make the choice that we need to make a decision, we should choose a tool or technique that can help us make the correct possible selection. The technique that I have chosen is called "Six Thinking Hats." This technique will help you to look at the decisions that you need to make from a number of different perspectives. It will also allow you to move outside your normal way of thinking. With that being said, it will help you to understand the full depth of your decisions. It will also let you spot issues and opportunities that you might not have noticed beforehand. (Mind Tools, 2007)
For many of us when we choose to make decisions, we use the rational side of us and forget about looking at decisions from a creative, emotional, intuitive, or even a negative viewpoint. When decisions are being made this way, we underestimate resistance to plans, fail to make creative leaps and do not make essential contingency plans. However, if we choose to use the Six Thinking Hats technique, we will than be able to mix emotion, our skill in execution, sensitivity, creativity and good contingency planning. (Mind Tools, 2007)
The Six Thinking Hats technique is six different hats with six different styles of thinking. The first hat is the white hat or "the facts, just the facts." (The de Bono Group, 2007) This hat is more focused on the data that is available. With this hat, you need to look at all the information that is in front of you and see what you can learn from it. With that being said, you also need to be able to see if there are any gaps that exist and if there are you need to be able to fill or account for them.
A decision is a conclusion or resolution reached after consideration. Everyday, people run into difficult decisions. The choices you make in your life define you as a person. In choice to kill his best friend, in the short story “Honor” The Servant has to choose what lengths he is willing to go to bury his son himself, and in another short story “ Gentlemen, Your Verdict” the commander lieutenant Oram has to make the best decision is when they are faced with a sinking ship and little oxygen left.
You will be faced with some very tough decisions but remember in your mind and repeat it over and over will this help me advance towards my goal or set me back by doing this you will know what's right. If you do what's best for you not only are you helping
For bigger, broader decisions it’s best to ask people for help, and this is useful because usually, others have more life experience than us. For example, Romeo and
There are two ways in which people make decisions in their daily life or at work: Intuitive or rational. If we talk about intuitive decision-making (IDM) we talk about the subjective decisions that are not based on any facts and purely instinctive, for example whether or not to cross the street. These decisions are fast occurring, have no any need for reasoning and are used if facts are unavailable or making a decision is very difficult.
There will be a certain point in your life, when you will have to make a major life decision, from buying a car, to buying a house, to what career you want to have. These are all very hard decision to make and at times it can be stressful just thinking about them. Unfortunately, they are all part of life.

Managers should be ready to teach the importance of decision-making skills and reinforcing organizational policy. Avoiding hasty, careless decisions, which can have devastating results on the manager's unit or the entire organization. Decisions made with forethought, using the many managerial tools available will lead to better and more profitable operatio...
De Bono's six thinking hats use this lateral thinking technique. All members of a group will focus on a single aspect of a problem at the same time, moving on to another aspect together once discussion of the current one is exhausted. For example the Black hat is for judgment, the Green hat for creativity and the White hat signifies information needed or already know. This system is widely used for business' mainly in meetings, but also used in classrooms as well. is best understood in contrast to traditional argument or adversarial thinking. By wearing each hat you can effectively scan the entire situation and separate your thinking modes and ultimately embrace a more holistic or global perspective and approach to your problem or challenge. This approach is simple but powerful.
Decision making, as taken from the Wikipedia (2006) encyclopedia, is defined as "the cognitive process leading to the selection of a course of action among alternatives. Every decision making process produces a final choice called a decision. It can be an action or an opinion. It begins when we need to do something but we do not know what. Therefore, decision-making is a reasoning process which can be rational or irrational, and can be based on explicit assumptions or tacit assumptions." (para.1). Decisions made by using a decision-making model typically result in better decisions. Decisions resulting from the model tend to be more consistent since the same steps are followed each time. Increased thoroughness of decision options considered is another benefit in using a decision-making model, as numerous factors are taken into account.
In a moment an unwise choice can completely derail your best developed goals or rather a wise decision can get you out of the murkiest of situations with ease. Now making a choice comes with responsibilities. The choices you make will affect not only you but also the people around you. At a personal level the things which drive our decisions are our emotions, our memories and our reasoning. At an organisational level it is always weighed according to the pros and cons of the decision.
An employee does an unsatisfactory job on an assigned project. Explain the attribution process that this person's manager will use to form judgments about this employee's job performance.
If life were merely a contest with fate, then should we not think before we act? Though some may argue that the proper time to reflect is before acting, I have learned from experience that, more times than not, this is not the best approach. The ability to act on instinct is crucial to success, in many situations. During an earthquake, for instance, one must quickly respond in whichever way necessary to protect themselves, as well as their loved ones. No matter how prepared, or trained, one may be, there is no way to predict what the essential motions should be taken at the time of an emergency.
Making decisions is an important part of our everyday life. Decisions define actions and lead to the achievement of goals. However, these depend on the effectiveness of the decision-making process. An effective decision is free from biases, uncertainties, and is deeply dependent on information and critical thinking. Poor decisions lead to the inability to achieve set objectives and could lead to losses, if finance is a factor. Therefore, it is important to contemplate about quality and ways to achieve it in decision-making, which is the focus of this paper. The purpose is to look into the needs of decision-making, including what one should do and what one should not do.
Rational decision making is one of the most common problem solving methods and can be used to solve almost all problems. Rational decision making and problem solving processes can be explained in a logical manner. Effective leaders use rational decision making processes to identify the problem, think up solutions, evaluate alternatives along with select a solution, implement and evaluate the final solution. In rational decision making leaders analyze the problem to achieve the most efficient choice through different possible alternatives from different scenarios before making a selection.
Decision making is one of the most important aspects in life and work because of its strong link to success and effectiveness. Actually, successful people achieve their goals in life and work through effective and efficient decision making. The decision making process is usually guided by an individual’s beliefs, values, and attitudes as well concepts. While a person can use various concepts in making decisions, they should be very careful to select a concept that is effective and contributes to huge success. Nonetheless, these concepts exist to help an individual become a better decision maker in the world around him/her.
