Introduction
Self-report has always been one the easiest ways to gain insight of a person’s personality. These test can range from quizzes filled out online that tell you which pop star is your personality twin to standardized tests requiring a certified test user. Some of the most popular and highly researched tests have been the MMPI and its successors. The MMPI, created by Stark R. Hathaway and John Charneley McKinley, was the first step towards the MMPI-2-RF. The MMPI was firstly created to test individuals who were 14 years old and older. Throughout the years, the MMPI has through a lot of changes, evolving into three tests used today: MMPI-2, MMPI-A, and MMPI-2-RF (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2013).
General Information
The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form, or more commonly known as the MMPI-2-RF, is used to assess various components of personality and psychopathology (Cohen & Swerdlik, 2013). Developed by Yossef S. Ben-Porath, PhD, and Auke Tellegen, PhD, the MMPI-2-RF is a recently developed version of the MMPI-2 originally published 1943 by the University of Minnesota Press and distributed by Pearson Assessment. The University of Minnesota Press published the latest version of the MMPI-2, the MMPI-2-RF, in 2008. The MMPI-2-RF is comprised of 338 True-False items, typically taking 35-50 minutes to complete although there is no time limit. The MMPI-2-RF has different prices depending on which scoring and reporting option one chooses. The Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MACI) replaced the Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI), which had two versions. One version of the MAPI was for clinicians to use on teenagers who were already receiving treatment for emotional or behavioral disorders, and the other version was for school counselors to use in determining which students would benefit from being assessed further (Kaufman & Kaufman, 2008). Then, the MACI was created and combined both versions of the MAPI into one test, in addition to including other behaviors that were not previously assessed on the original MAPI (Kaufman & Kaufman, 2008). The MACI is also considered a viable alternative to the MMPI-A, or the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory for Adolescents;
The MIPS-R consists of 180 true/false items used to assess normal adult personality. The test can be administered and scored through paper-and-pencil or computer formats. The MIPS-R is comprised of 24 scales assembled into 12 contrasting pairs. The pairs are grouped into three categories: Motivating Styles, Thinking Styles, and Behaving styles. The MIPS-R has three additional scales used to assess the test results’ validity: a Negative Impression scale, a Positive Impression scale, and a Consistency scale. A higher raw score on the Negative Impression or Positive Impression scales, indicate examinees may be attempting to represent themselves in a negative or more positive way, respectively. Since it was designed as a self-report tool that assesses a broad scope of clinical conditions, its reliability and validity can be considered as strong. In its 478 items, the MMPI-A covers the 10 original scales of MPPI, six validity scales, PSY-5 scales, and 15 content component scales. The Big Five Personality Test provided an interesting account of my personality. Although the majority of the results were accurate, I was surprised by two of the outcomes. According to this test, I am a closed-minded, unmethodical, social butterfly that is well-mannered towards others and composed under pressure (John, 2009). First, the results were completely accurate as I am extremely extroverted. I never meet a stranger, and I carry on conversations with anyone. The experience of tragedy and joy also plays a critical role in giving people their individual identity. Personality is the other factor that separates one person from others, and the personality of an individual depends heavily on his or her beliefs, culture, and the environment in which he or she is raised. There are several different types of personality tests that one can take to identify certain traits of his or her identity, and one of them is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). The following information can be found in the “Results and discussion” section: “The analyses reported above show that MBTI items fail to form the factors hypothesized by the test’s authors” (Saggino, Cooper, & Kline, 2001). The information I found in this study complimented the conclusion of the other article I reviewed. They both concluded that the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator had many faults and was not reliable nor valid as far as solid science is concerned.
In the field of psychology, personality refers to the unique characteristics and behavior patterns that distinguish one individual from another. Personality can be a complex spectrum to evaluate. Personality of is not always stable and may change over time for different reasons such as shocking events, education, and environment to name a few. The study and assessment of personality has been used to describe and discover from severe mental disorders to assist self-awareness. Personality inventories are a method to assess personality traits. These evaluation methods arose from the need to understand and treat the effects of war on soldiers’ personality. Personality inventories have evolved over time and today are used in several fields: education, research, clinical, counseling, and industrial / organizational. This paper aims to explore and offer details of one of these personality inventories: The Sixteen Personality Factors Questionnaire (16PF).
After taking the Big Five Personality Test I’ve concluded that it is a fairly accurate assessment of my personality. 1) On Openness to Experience/Intellect I ranked at the 53 percentile, with the description that I don’t typically seek out new experiences. I would agree with this assessment. While I am somewhat creative, I am no artist. It takes me more time to do something creative than something analytical, but I do still like to be creative on occasion.
