The paint section was quite busy during my visit and only one female assistant was on the paint counter so she called for assistance as customers were walking away. I waited to be served amongst five others for appoximately ten minutes. I got served by Bailiegh and I told her everywhere that I needed to paint and she took me to different paints that I could use for the different places and told me some features and benefits of the products. However, for the wall paint she just pointed from a far at the PPG paint she recommended that I should use and then recommended the Dulux paint by pointing to it as my slightly cheaper option when it was actually more expensive. I was confused to which one I should get because she did not show me the paint
tin it self. She also did not give valid reasons why I should choose the PPG over other paints except that it was exclusive to Bunnings, which meant nothing to me. It appeared that she had loss concentration and wanted to leave and serve another customer. After Bailiegh had given me her recommendations for the paint she asked me if there was anything else she could help me with and I said, no but that I would ask any more questions as I thought of them. I would have liked her to ask me if I wanted to buy any of the paints and then talk with me through colour options. She did not try to sell me any of the products or suggest helping me getting them tinted. She was not aware I was not going to make a purchase right then, but if I was going too then she missed the opportunity to close a pretty big sale. During our time together I was disappointed that she did not ask me many questions about my renovation. The only question she asked was whether or not I was painting inside or outside. If she had gathered more information from me she would have been able to help me better and suggest other products that I may need like a primer. I would have liked her to ask me if I had everything I needed for the painting like paint brushes, sand paper ect. This way she could upsell and I could leave the store with everything I needed. Overall Bailiegh was nice, friendly and approachable. She was knowlageble in the products, but lacked to go the extra mile in suggesting other products I may need, which in my opinion did not make this top customer service.
When most people think of Sherwin Williams they think of paint. From the big blue globe with the paint running down stating "cover the earth." Sherwin-Williams has been synonymous with paint. The over 2,300 hundred stores also sell wallpaper, brushes, rollers, carpet, tape, caulk, and most any other item that is needed for any painting project. Sherwin-Williams is also tries to be the leader in innovation and for coming up with better and new products. For example the EZ pour can (which is a new form of paint can made from plastic that reseal with a screw on lid), and the KRYLON Fusion (which is spray paint made for adhering to plastic). Most people do not know is that although Sherwin-Williams sales paint they also make a lot of other brand names that people are aware of just by the name.
In the field of academia, ethnographic studies are often overlooked as a serious source and reviewed as literature for the mass populace. Because of the often common language, fluid writing styles, format, and production of typical ethnographies, it is much more appealing and attainable to popular culture than the research within a scholarly journal or anthology. Although, perhaps instead of deeming ethnographic work unworthy of a scholarly title due to the appeal it possess, historians should relish in this relativity new form of research for its popularity. Ethnographic studies provide readers with a rare and untarnished micro historic view of the customs of a particular culture or individuals within said culture. Opposing most academia, these studies can sometimes be void in political agenda and personal biases, providing the audience with more objective material. Ethnographies often allow readers to see private and intimate moments within the milieu of the subject which is not often reserved for public life, which is the typically sphere of scholarly study; because of this tendency, individuals and groups which lack a strong public voice are frequently the foci of ethnographic studies. Throughout history women have often been the victims of such marginalization, with a recent focus on Eastern and Islamic women. Considering the previous, Muslim women and gender have been the center of contemporary ethnographic studies, giving a voice to non-Westernized Muslim women and providing a natural research of gender relations with little bias or political agenda.
Reflexivity is a qualitative method of research that takes an ethnography one step further, displaying the personal thoughts and reflections of the anthropologist on his informants. Ethnographies generally take an outside or foreign perspective of a culture, like reading a text, and reflexivity introduces a new component of inside description. Here, the anthropologist may describe personal interactions and experiences with natives and use this inside information to make additional conclusions about the people being studied. The ethnographer may also reflect on his ethnic connections with his informants, or his acceptance into the society, explaining that it provides valuable, inside knowledge of the culture and ultimately leads to a greater understanding of the native people as a whole.
When I was a kid my parents always took me to Nathdwara to take the blessings of Lord Krishna every now and then because my parents are so religious. So by going there several times I am also attached to that place. Actually Nathdwara is situated in Rajasthan state and I live in the state called Gujarat and in the city called as Ahmedabad. It takes six hours drive from my city to Nathdwara and this is the only nearest place where I could get mental peace. This is very important place for me and my family because it is a tradition of our family that whoever goes there gives free food to the hungry and poor people. James P. Spradley (1979) described the insider approach to understanding culture as "a quiet revolution" among the social sciences (p. iii). Cultural anthropologists, however, have long emphasized the importance of the ethnographic method, an approach to understanding a different culture through participation, observation, the use of key informants, and interviews. Cultural anthropologists have employed the ethnographic method in an attempt to surmount several formidable cultural questions: How can one understand another's culture? How can culture be qualitatively and quantitatively assessed? What aspects of a culture make it unique and which connect it to other cultures? If ethnographies can provide answers to these difficult questions, then Spradley has correctly identified this method as revolutionary.
Personal experience and reflexivity should be used within anthropology as a tool to reflect on the culture that is being studied and not a refocusing of attention on the self. Works such as Dorinne Kondo’s “Dissolution and Reconstitution of Self,” use the idea of reflexivity as a mirror in which to view the culture being studied in a different manner. This use of reflexivity allows for the focus to stay on the culture being studied. A move away from this is the new branch of humanistic anthropology represented in this essay by Renato Rosaldo’s “Grief and a Headhunter’s Rage” and Ruth Behar’s “Anthropology that Breaks Your Heart” allows anthropologists to use reflexivity as a way to explore universal human feelings. For me, this is not the study of anthropology as much as self-reflexive psychology. The focus shifts from culture to self. The anthropologists completely understands the feelings of the people he/she is studying. I think that it is rather ambitious to state that emotion is univeral, and I do not think that it is the job of anthropologists to do so. The reflexive voice is a necessary aspect of ethnographic writing, but the anthropologist must be careful not to shift focus from concentrating on culture to concentrating on herself.
Ethnography Works Cited Missing Anthropology is defined, in the most basic terms, as the study of other cultures. This field can subsequently be divided into more specific sections, and contain more precise defining characteristics, but this definition is essentially all that is needed. Anthropology is a science that attempts to look at other cultures and draw conclusions to questions that are raised while studying. An anthropologist is someone who accepts what is presented before them and is driven by an urge to understand each presentation as thoroughly as possible. Once the concept of anthropology is accepted, one must identify the means of reaching the goal of this field.
Sociology is something I didn’t know about until I took this class. This class introduced sociology to me. I learned about how society basically made boys supposed to like blue and girls supposed to like pink. Sociology is “the systematic or scientific study of human society and social behavior, from large-scale institutions and mass culture to small groups and individual interactions” (Ferris and stein 2014: p9). Sociology is not something you just learn when you are just born. You learn about sociology throughout your life. The role of reflexivity in ethnographic research and writing has certain advantages and limits, as it gives the discipline of anthropology another form of interpreting ethnographies. Reflexivity, in terms of work of anthropology, is to insist that anthropologists systematically and rigorously reveal their methodology and themselves as the instrument of data generation. It is the self-consciousness or the work's ability to see itself as a work. There are various styles of reflexivity in ethnographic writing and Dorinne Kondo, Renato Rosaldo, and George Marcus are three anthropologists that influenced the role of reflexivity through their ethnographies.
This paper will provide an integrations of the thematic reflections that include principles and processes of globalization, which will make a connection to real-world application. This week I asked my field instructor what skills, knowledge, and values are most needed by social work students in my practicum setting? My supervisor responded, “ You should have a high compassion level for people along with a mutual respect for them, a wider range of community services that are available in the area, and be well versed and rounded in crisis intervention theory along with cultural diversity. Everything that my field supervisor suggested coincides with the generalist competencies described in table 3.1, there is nothing that contrasts with this table. Working with others and improving own learning and performance are highly essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how well I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them.
I am a sociology anthropology major. Previous classes of sociology introduced me to how society is situated. In other words how society views, thinks about and perceives life experiences. One example that I can remember from the past few months comes from my criminology course. I learned about how the general justice system treats criminals. The second example comes from another course I took, has to do with the social political and economic view and perception involving children. I learned that children’s behaviors, thoughts and perceptions about the world varies considerably with regard to societal culture.
As I sit here and reflect on how my education and work life experiences have prepared me for my future in the workplace; I truly become overwhelmed by the amount of things that I have learned and experienced. Like many others these experiences has influenced, motivated, and driven me to make the choices I have made. The good, the bad and the ugliest of them all have helped me to become the person that I am today.
Cultural anthropology has taught me a lot in such a short time. This class has been very eye opening to me and has made me think more about the different cultures around me and just how important it is to learn about them. One of the things I have learned is how religion is related to culture. Culture is behaviors of a community such as the food they make, the music they listen to, and the rituals they take part in. This can be very similar to religion because a culture is based off of their religious beliefs. Some cultures do not eat pig because it is against their religious beliefs.
