What are your strengths and weaknesses in terms of political skill? How is political skill related to power and empowerment? Is political skill something that should be cultivated? Explain. If you were to develop greater political skill, what would be the most ethical way to go about it?
Effective political Skills play a vital role in personal and business manners. My results from the questionnaire revealed that I am relatively strong in Networking Ability -7. In terms of Social Astutenenss-5, I scored rather low. Conversely, in Interpersonal Influence and Apparent Sincerity my scores where rather high.
At work, I am connected with people that are perceived to be important. There have been instances whereby I have utilized networks in efforts to get projects and tasks done. In like manner, I enjoy developing relationships and establishing networks with co-workers.
I have a tendency to be passive-aggressive. When in a group of extrovert I tend to assume more introverted position. In this manner, my level of social astuteness is rather low. Sometimes my ability to influence others is not effective. Due to these introverted behaviors, there is a level of uncomfortability that comes with knowing the right thing to say. However often times I am not acutely aware of others motivations and hidden agendas. I tend to think the best of co-workers and do not ready recognize that people have hidden agendas. I do however pay very close attention to people’s facial expressions, feelings, and emotions. In doing so, people say that I make them feel comfortable and at ease. People generally like me and I am perceived to be a trusting person. In this manner, my interpersonal influence is high. I am genuinely interested in other people. My co-workers believe I am sincere and genuine. I have an apparent sincerity while communicating with others.
Conger describes empowering others as an art. Additionally empowerment is the act of strengthen an individual’s beliefs in his or her sense of effectiveness. Empowerment involves processing and influencing the internal beliefs of people.
Research identified four means of providing empowering information to others: 1. Positive emotional support during experiences associated with stress and anxiety. 2. Though words of encouragement and positive persuasion. 3. By observing others’ effectiveness-in other words, having models of success with whom people identified 4. By actually experiencing the mastering of a task with success. (Conger,J.A. ,2010).
Political skill should and can be cultivated. In my experience, my superiors that exhibited strong political skills were able to get more done.

The DSNI strives to achieve all of these sub-ideas within the theory.
Although the way I display shows that I am hard-working, I do not want other people to know that. I afraid that they will think that I am a nerd. I usually pretend that I am outgoing, such as posting pictures with my friends, when I use social media. I think others can assess most of my personality based on my behavioral residue. I am a heavy sleeper, hard-working, and love clean and listening to music. However, I am not outgoing. I put my backpack next to my chair because I have to go to school every day. If I do not have class, I would stay at home. Hence, it does not mean that I am outgoing.
Stephen Medvic, In Defense of Politicians, discusses why Americans feel that politicians are dishonest. In 2007, a Gallup poll about honesty and ethical standards for occupations, showed that only 12 and 9 percent of people felt that Congressmen and State office holders held high standards, (Medvic p. 2). In addition, Americans tend to like their representatives more than the members of Congress because they view them as actual people. Americans view Congress as a group of politicians who are greedy and not representing their interests, (Medvic p. 4).
The dictionary defines self-empowerment to mean an individual who is in control of his or her life and views the trials they face in life in a positive way. It is also about building self-esteem and confidence. With the right kind of motivation, a person can be empowered to have a happier life as they move through the transitions of aging. To be truly self-empowered means that you have the ability inside yourself to know what is really best for you. Therefore, your actions reflect the power of your own strength that you take from making your own decisions. If one is empowered, it is the same as having a clear vision of where to go and how to get there. This knowledge also implies self-belief, self-trust and self-leadership. As unique as we are throughout our lifetimes, we are just as unique in how we age. Some people age with minimal aches and pains, fully conscious mentally and engaging in life to their last breath. For others, aging is not so easy a task. Individuals that are challenged throughout the aging process sometimes forget who they once were due the loss of control they feel when making their own daily decisions. Continued research in the field of self-empowerment might then be focused on how we can teach continued empowerment to all individuals, no matter what stage of their life they are experiencing, in order to lead happier and more fulfilling lives as they move through this final, and hopefully best part of their lives.

The president must act as the “lubricant” for the other sectors of government in order to preserve order and accomplish business. Neustadt emphasizes the president’s ability to forge strong personal relationships and his or her charisma, indicating that these characteristics affect the president’s ability to persuade. According to Neustadt, a successful president persuades the public, congress, and foreign powers to align their motives and views with him. I have a great comfort in engaging others and find it easy to communicate with people. When in a group or engaging with someone one-on-one, I do not find it uncomfortable to engage in a conversation or start one. The strengths I possess in my engagement skills are that I am an extrovert, compassionate, and communicate effectively. However, I do need to work on not always starting a conversation and allowing others to talk first. I also need to improve on my listening skills instead of always feeling that I need to make a contribution to the conversation. At our annual convention, I check everyone in and have gotten to know all of the regulars over the last 13 years. The problem is that I only see these people once a year and I have to force myself to be out-going and exceptionally friendly for those 2 days. It also holds me back from leaving my current position where I know I’ve reached my zenith, because I interview terribly. This is one of the big reasons for my increasing my level of education. If I can’t speak for myself, I’m hoping my education will do some of the talking for me. I’m a great communicator, but I’m not a talker. I see leaders who can walk up to anyone and start a conversation, and I wish I could do that. I believe this limits my ability to be as an effective leader as I’d like to be.

My professional attitude is similar. I find that I try to communicate well with others and express my interest through body language such as smiling, eye contact, nodding of my head, etc. I do to show that I can be personable and hope to build good relationships on that. Based on my scores, I also show higher scores for Conventional, Dependant, and/or Avoidance. This is true in the sense that sometimes, if I find myself too comfortable in a situation; I tend to become withdrawn in order to protect my well being. I don’t want people to take advantage of me, so I become distant after a certain point. This does cause conflict for me both at work and in my personal affairs.
I am an intuitive-feeling personality. I am charismatic, participative and very people oriented. I tend to focus on the big picture and not the small specifics. I am not power hungry and try to be helpful and giving to those around me.
