Each ethnicity’s role is determined by the many stereotypes that are created and reinforced throughout society. Then, these stereotypes attach a stigma to that ethnicity to which other people believe. The materials presented in class touch on the biggest stereotypes such as Asians being good at mathematics and engineering, African Americans being manly and tough, Latinas being sexy, and so on. These stereotypes define the stigma and reinforce this idea of a "role" that each ethnicity has in society. All of the articles underline the idea that these stigmas are plainly unfair and unjust. African Americans tend to have the largest amount of inequity put onto them. Hobson eloquently states in her speech that "there are no words" for those kinds of incidents. They show, with horrific clarity, that these immense stigmas exist and are still extraordinarily pertinent. It is not only African Americans, Judith Ortiz Cofer illustrates in her article, "The Myth of the Latin Woman", a scene where she was going to read her poetry in front of an audience and a lady beckoned her over since the lady assumed that she was a waitress (Cofer 207). Again, "no words", the fact that people have the audacity to assume that someone is some sort of servant, or mugger, or whatever else is truly frightening. The real problem is that these are not "intentional act[s] of cruelty" (Cofer 207), it is just natural, and "much of their oppressiveness [is] unconscious" (McIntosh 1). As Peggy McIntosh explains in her article, "White Privilege", the main perpetrators of these acts are white privileged people who are unknowingly discriminating towards other people because of these perceived stigmas. From a uniquely analytical standpoint, they have no reason not to assume, some of the conditions of McIntosh’s white privilege
