Remarkably, a tablet, which weighs a mere 2 pounds, is capable of storing the amount of information contained in 3,500 textbooks that tip the scale to almost two tons! (ProCon.org) Tablets are handheld, electronic devices that are quickly replacing many desktop and laptop computers due to their ease of use and vast functionality. They contain a vast array of applications, or “apps,” that can be downloaded for a certain purpose such as education, games, utilities, and much more. Tablets are superior to textbooks in education because they are more convenient, access information faster, are less harmful to the user and the environment, are commonly used in businesses and colleges, and can easily keep up with the continuously changing world.
Technology has finally produced a positive substitute for the heavy, expensive, and inconvenient textbooks. Using tablets can greatly decrease the amount of storage space needed in classrooms. This will allow for improved organization and freeing up resources that can be better spent enhancing the educational experience. After all the necessary material is downloaded on to each tablet, the price can be up to 50-60% less than textbooks. (ProCon.org) As many different varieties of tablets are becoming available, competition in the tablet market is increasing. “For close to a year, Apple went virtually unchallenged in the tablet market. It is critical for schools to keep up with technological advances in order to provide for the best level of education. There is no doubt that our way of living is constantly changing and advancing. Children will become more excited and eager to learn if it is done in a modern way. Tablets save the environment, improve education and are great alternatives for the inconvenience of textbooks. Tablets will allow schools to join the 21st century.
