It is the year 2014, and Richard Branson is one of the richest men in the world. For the past 20 years, Mr. Branson has worked to become a world renowned businessman who defies the odds of all traditional business, and attributes all of his success, to his effective leadership, which begs the inherent question, what has Sir Branson done to be an effective leader?
Background information
Sir Richard Branson was Born July 18, 1950 in Surry, England. At a young age what was most significant in Branson’s childhood was his struggle with dyslexia and hard time in educational institutions. He was born to a humble hard working middle class family that put him in It was Branson’s educational struggles that allowed him to persevere in athletics. He was captain of his school football team by the time he reached high school and was very social. He soon found that his academic struggles were due to dyslexia. Although sports became the highlight of Branson’s high school career, he dropped out by the age of 16 due to his struggles in academia. It was his leadership on the football team that served as a landscape for the beginning of his career. After leaving school, Branson started up his first business, which was called Student Magazine. The publication was run by students and sold to students. At the time, it sold 8,000 worth of advertising. In 1969, Mr. Branson was heavily inspired by the British pop scene and started in mail order record company called, “Virgin” to help him fund Student Magazine. The Virgin mail order business performed modestly and Richard expanded the movie from there.

Leadership at times can be a complex topic to delve into and may appear to be a simple and graspable concept for a certain few. Leadership skills are not simply acquired through position, seniority, pay scale, or the amount of titles an individual holds but is a characteristic acquired or is an innate trait for the fortunate few who possess it. Leadership can be misconstrued with management; a manager “manages” the daily operations of a company’s work while a leader envisions, influences, and empowers the individuals around them.
As a whole, Warren Bennis defined the values and achievement plan for becoming the most successful leader one can be. He highlighted the link between self knowledge and business. Zuckerberg created the social media website where people get connected virtually and led the company to incredible success. Zuckerberg’s leadership style can be seen with inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and idealized influence. Warren Buffett, the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, which owns many different companies, is one of the most successful business leaders of our time. According to Howard (2014), he is the second richest American, coming in at a net worth of over $70 billion. Besides his personal net worth, Berkshire Hathaway is the fifth-most valuable public company in the United States at $350 billion (Howard, 2014). While he is clearly a very wise investor, Warren Buffett is also a successful leader. As stated by Spindler (2010), leadership is a crucial part of any successful business, and good leadership is what Mr. Buffett portrays. The analysis given in this paper will show Warren Buffett’s values and leadership qualities, his leadership style, as well as looking into his influence he has on his followers.

A leader sets the tone for those they supervise. Having a weak or ineffective leadership style turns what could be a productive organization into one that lacks direction, is chaotic, and fails to live up to its potential. Incompetent central leadership can also cause a power struggle amongst the other remaining team members. Groups seek leadership; when leaders fail to use their powers others will maneuver to use the power left in the void. This can lead to a power-struggle and backstabbing (Morgan, 2007).
