The class room sizes in schools today are very cramped and over populated. Teachers have more students than they can teach, making it hard to give any kind of one on one attention. There is an increased need for educational professionals, all teaching fields are experiencing a need for more teachers, and each type of educator possesses different teaching skills, and are on different ends of the pay scale depending on their teaching specialty.
Preschool teachers are becoming more and more sought after. The Bureau of Labor Statistics sees the need for Preschool teachers increasing by 25 percent by 2020, which is a faster increase than normal. It is widely accepted that early childhood education is important for a child’s intellectual and social development. As a result, there has been increasing demand for preschool programs, which is expected to create demand for preschool teachers. (Preschool Teachers, 2012) With the increase of needing more preschool teachers there will be more jobs opening in this field. Special education teachers, and elementary school teachers are not as sought after, though there is always a need for more teachers in these areas. The need for special education and elementary school teachers is only projected to increase by 17 percent according the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The enrollment rate for schools is increasing, as is the need for teachers who understand disabilities. These jobs will increase in all 3 fields by 2020, preschool jobs look to increase by 113,600 jobs (Preschool Teachers, 2012), whereas special education jobs will increase by 77,400 (Special Education Teachers, 2012) and elementary school jobs will increase the most by creating 281,500 jobs. The jobs of teaching professionals are on the rise and they are only going to continue to be readily available. As the population increases and the school enrollments increase, teachers are going to be needed more and more. There is always going to be a larger need for preschool teachers due to the increasing want of early education. Also special education teachers and elementary school teachers will be needed almost as fast since there is the increase of early education. Although many would not want to admit it, money can be the deciding factor in some things. Public school teacher salaries can vary depending on the state that they teach in. According to Yakima Herald the average pay in 25 out of the 50 states for an elementary school teachers is less than $40,000. She also states that 13 states paid their teachers $45,000 or more (1). The amount of money that a teacher receives is very low. In North Carolina teachers are under payed as well. In most states teachers have a chance to increase their pay by going back to school and getting a Masters degree. In 2013 the governor of North Carolina decided to get rid of tenure for teachers and also to get rid of the pay increase for teacher with their masters degree (Banchero 1). To have a bachelors degree or even a masters degree and to be making under $50,000 is something that one should take into consideration when deciding on a career. Dental hygienist receive more money then an elementary school teacher. Nora Powell associate dean for the dental hygienist program at Broward College states, “You don’t have to have a bachelor's degree and you can make $50,000 to $60,000 annually, working four days a week..” (Pounds 1). Arguably, the most important element in a student’s education is class size and one¬-on-one time with the teacher. Right now, states are spending close to $100 million to reduce class sizes in an effort to increase student achievement (Hancock). Most studies and reports on class size by the U.S. Department of Education were conducted from the mid-1980 and late-1990. These studies are not relevant to technology available to campuses today, and do not reflect the average student’s classroom. With the introduction of certain technology, large class sizes are becoming more student-friendly and based less on lecturing.
In my twelve years of teaching experience, one thing that most of my colleagues have struggled with at some point in their career has been classroom management. Classroom management is one many keys to instructional success. Unfortunately, many have left the teaching field due to lack of knowledge of classroom management best practices.
Are our children prepared for Kindergarten? How can we as parents help prepare our children for Kindergarten? Over the years, studies have found that children are not being prepared for Kindergarten. Researchers of the United States Department of Education have found that "6 out of 10 Kids Unprepared for Kindergarten", meaning sixty percent of the nation’s children are not prepared to enter the Kindergarten atmosphere. (Livingstone 2015) Though some parents find their children exceeding the requirements for Kindergarten, many parents are finding that their child is unprepared for the atmosphere of the Kindergarten educational expectations.
Every teacher has this potential whether they are aware of it or not. I have been a teacher for nine years in early childhood education and within those nine years I have become very aware of how powerful the smallest act of caring can turn a person’s life around or even just make someone’s day a little better. Being a preschool teacher has brought me great pleasure to my life simply brightening a child’s day and knowing that I am making a difference in their life. Through my journey as a teacher I have thought about how I can advance in my career field and still be active with children on a daily basis and continue making a difference in each child’s life as well as their parents. With plenty of thought and research I have come to the conclusion and gained the interest to become a preschool and childcare director.
When seeking a career, it is important to see the future growth of the job and the salary. It will determine how difficult it will be to find placement. Early childhood educators are the first people to truly show an impact on children and will always be needed. The projected growth of early childhood lead educators between 2014 to 2024 is 7% (Elrick). They will be needed in the upcoming future and the projected growth is said to go up even further. The median annual salary in the United States is $28,120 (Elrick). Many people do not choose this career because the salary is very low compared to the amount of hours spent. As early childhood educators, we have many responsibilities to countless people and institutions. The most important responsibility that has been reinforced to me over the years is the responsibility for the well-being of children. Not simply the ones in my care, but all children everywhere. This can be accomplished in many ways such as advocacy. Organizations such as NAEYC, of which I am a member, engage in collective public policy advocacy which involves speaking out for and participating in activities that support and protect vulnerable populations such as children (Freeman, Decker & Decker, 2013). By volunteering at the Judy Center and after-school enrichment programs such as Bridges, I have had to opportunity and privilege to meet and collaborate with many wonderful social workers, advocates, and others who toil so diligently to improve the lives of children. “Helping young children become what they are capable of becoming is what the field of early childhood is all about,” (Colmer, Waniganayake, & Field, 2014, 103). In order to accomplish this, early childhood professionals need to continue to grow and develop as professionals. And so, the professional development of every early childhood professional needs to be seen as a lifelong task (Livingston, 2014). School enrollment often affects the ratios of the classroom, which can become a factor in student success. Budget restrictions result in larger teaching loads, which decrease the time and attention teachers can give to a student. Large portions of institutional expenditures go to salaries, which supports the argument that most education dollars are spent on people, and not on the product. Thus raising the questions what can be done to spend education dollars more effectively with out over crowding classrooms and increase workloads.
