The submission from the SVdPS raises several key issues in regards to the adequacy of the allowance payment system. The submission noted that the current rate for single persons is now less than half of the full-time minimum wage (SVdPS, 2012) and argues that it makes it harder for people to find employment as it locks recipients in to a more permanent form of poverty. The cost of living increases as public transport costs more, and is sparser and less frequent in areas that rent is lower, credit and loan repayments cost more, and recipients have to pay more for basic services (ACOSS, 2012). Moreover, SVdPS state that poverty lines set by the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, place recipients of the Newstart Allowance as living below poverty line and with the assistance of extra benefits, it only places recipients marginally above the poverty line (SVdPS, 2012).
Material deprivation seeks to measure living standards directly, drawing on what households lack what are usually accepted as ‘essentials’. Overall, the SBS programme, Struggle Street (2015) provided a graphic insight into the hardships faced by lower-class Australians in Mount Druitt, Sydney. Nevertheless, viewing the programme allowed me to reflect and compare with my own observations of poverty within both Vietnam and Cambodia. Class is a key idea related to inequality, prejudice and discrimination in Australian society. It has been considered out of fashion, because some Australian people think that there is no class difference between people in Australia, everyone enjoys equality in society. In fact, the recent de-regulation of the workplace, and the widening gap in access to hospitals, schools and employment opportunities between the rich and poor, have made class more visible in Australian than ever before. Class is "a category of people who have generally similar educational histories, job opportunities, and social standing and who are conscious of their membership in a social group that is ranked in relation to others and is replicated over generations" (Kent, 1998:87). This essay argues that class cause continues to inequality in Australian society. Firstly, class structures labor market inequality. Secondly, class shapes the quality of a person's life. Thirdly, class inequality produces continuing class differences into the next generation. Finally, class has becoming a debate in Australian society, because class inequality encourages the `right' people to work more efficiently in the workforce and helps people to identify themselves in society, but continuing relevance of the concept of class is a matter in contemporary Australia.
Throughout the world, in history and in present day, injustice has affected all of us. Whether it is racial, sexist, discriminatory, being left disadvantaged or worse, injustice surrounds us. Australia is a country that has been plagued by injustice since the day our British ancestors first set foot on Australian soil and claimed the land as theirs. We’ve killed off many of the Indigenous Aboriginal people, and also took Aboriginal children away from their families; this is known as the stolen generation. On the day Australia became a federation in 1901, the first Prime Minister of Australia, Edmund Barton, created the White Australia Policy. This only let people of white skin colour migrate to the country. Even though Australia was the first country to let women vote, women didn’t stand in Parliament until 1943 as many of us didn’t support female candidates, this was 40 years after they passed the law in Australian Parliament for women to stand in elections. After the events of World War Two, we have made an effort to make a stop to these issues here in Australia.
Poverty, we hear about it every day. We hear about all the children in Africa, and other developing countries, but what about the countries that already have a stable government and are a first or second world country? It is scarce you hear about poverty in those countries, but it is as every bit as real, and devastating. "A lot of people find it difficult to appreciate that [poverty] is happening on their doorstep and perhaps don't really understand what it means.” -Mary Chandler, head of Save the Children charity. One country that you never would have thought of to have poverty is Wales. Wales has been impoverished for a few years, but the problem seems to be getting worse, and not better.
Over the last two decades the Australian population has faced a number of economic instabilities that has seen the gap between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ increase. To determine who the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ are an in-depth investigation will be performed examining the circumstances under which the gap can be manipulated. The economic wellbeing of individuals is largely determined by their command over economic resources (ABS, 2009). The wellbeing of individuals who are classified as ‘haves’ are usually people who are asset rich, contain bonds, shares and are fairly affluent. The wellbeing of individuals who are classified as ‘have nots’ are usually the working poor, who have little assets and little investments i.e. bonds. These individuals are usually middle income earners which are categorised as being in relative poverty. Relative poverty as defined by L. Kirkwood, I. Searle, T. Cronk, D. Cave and J. Swiericzuk as the situation of people whose income and lifestyle has fallen below, by more than a certain degree, the average income and lifestyle enjoyed by the rest of society.
The myth that Australia is a classless society is still, till this day, circulating. With education opportunities differing, depending on your status in society and socioeconomic background, not all Australians share the same opportunity of education. Whether being a middle class citizen or an “elite” or from working class, all education opportunities offered, will be influenced by your financial status and hierarchy in society.

Welfare recipients are now expected to get a job within the first two years of receiving assistance. It is unclear what will happen when people are forced off of public assistance. In 1998 there was a 3% decline in the poverty level, yet a 35% decline in the number of people receiving public assistance. (Morales, Sheafor, 2000). It is clear that ending AFDC did not solve the problem of poverty in the United States.
Since the days of the Poor Laws, welfare has sought to force people to work. Per a passage written by Diana Pearce in her article “the Feminization of Poverty: Work, Women, and Welfare”, she stated that “the workhouse and poorhouse were the nineteenth-century means, but today’s poor are coerced through forced registration in the WIN program. Although WIN does not force all recipients to work, its implied promise of a route out of poverty is, for many, a cruel hoax” (Pearce, 1978). The work incentive program (WIN) provided an average of about $250 to each qualified registrant. Operating the WIN employment and training programs had cost welfare agencies more than issuing monthly benefit checks, so WIN became a voluntary requirement. Many women found it stressful and nearly impossible to work full or part-time, and to adequately care for the children. There are many standpoints in which people examine the ways poverty affect society such as Marx’s conflict theory. Marx’s conflict theory goes over how social stratification being inevitable and how there is a class consciousness within people in the working class. Another way that poverty is scrutinized is by feminization. Feminization is the theory that will be explored throughout this essay.
