Effective communication is critical within the criminal justice setting. No records system can be effective without clearly communicating policies, directives, and procedures. Nor can an officer carry out a mission or survive without clear communications. Because communication involves the exchange of information between people (Wallace & Roberson, 2009) it is important to consider how people may perceive what is said or written in different situations. In this paper I will discuss the criminal justice setting, how they utilizes formal and informal channels of communication along with the use of verbal, non-verbal, communication. I will discuss the different barriers of communication, the difference of hearing and listening and how to overcome the barriers of communication in the criminal justice setting. Verbal and nonverbal communication play a big part in society, they are necessary to people getting along and building relationships. In the criminal justice setting verbal communication consists of written and spoken information. Non-verbal communication ensures the speaker to communicate what he or she is saying to the reader with a certain tone and body language. Both verbal and non-verbal communication has at least three components, the person who creates the communication, the communication itself, and the person who receives the communication. When defining verbal communication it includes oral (spoken), visual (seen), written, and electronic communication. Non- verbal includes tone of voice, facial expression, and body movement. According to (Hurt, n.d), in speech-based communication, this is the speaker, the words they used, and the listener. Another example would be written communication: the writer, the written piece... ... middle of paper ... ...llows persons transmitting messages to adapt to the receiver. Receiving feedback and giving feedback are processes that enhance police officers’ ability to effectively communicate with others. In conclusion communication plays an important role in people’s personal and professional lives. As much as 70 percent of work time is spent communicating with others. Several barriers to communication exist (Wallace & Roberson, 2009, Chapter 4). They range from emotional feelings to physical obstacles that prevent the free flow of information. Effective listening and feedback is a technique that anyone can learn. Anyone tasked with the job of communicating would need to keep in mind the goal of any communication, specifically, to deliver accurate information. By following the simple strategies of communication, anyone can eliminate the frustration of poor communication.
James C. Petersen (2007), author of Why Don’t We Listen Better, offers practical advice on how to communicate effectively and connect with others. In order to help his readers, communicate effectively, Petersen (2007) divides his book into five divisions. Each division builds on the content in the preceding portions. Every segment provides a great amount of information, which will aid people in how they choose to communicate.
Communication also consist of verbal and non-verbal communication. Verbal communication is continuous and basically can be perform by saying or communicating with other person in front of you and non-verbal communication is used when someone cannot speak therefore hand gestures, body movement, and any other ways which would be easier to convey your message to the person. (University of western Sydney 2010) effective communication is essential for police in order to enhance public confident. Police must keep in mind that not everyone is fluent in English, therefore must speak in clear plain English. Communication needs to be complete and style is also extremely important in this respect and must avoid jargon and technical terms so everyone in the public understands the message. (Wunch, hol
Solid communication is important in any job, but it is especially important in the criminal justice sector. One
Knowing other forms of communication is important because it can help to decrease negative behaviors for those who are non-verbal, and to understand their wants and needs. Many Autistic children have trouble with socializing and understanding different facial features, tones of voice, body language. For a non-verbal Autistic child the level of difficulty increases along with the chance of them becoming frustrated. There are many ways for a non-verbal child to be able to communicate, such as PECS boards, writing, different technology on ipads. This paper will provide evidence to answer the question: What are some techniques that are used to help a non-verbal Autistic child communicate?
Not a day goes by that an individual does not interact with another person, either by phone or in person. There will always be some interaction between two or more people. This interaction will bring about many thought process and emotions that will give the receiver a cue to respond with verbal and nonverbal messages.
Communication is the process of conveying information to each another using words, actions, or by writing the information down to be read by another person. Communication is something that most people do at some point each day, and is an important part of life especially in a working environment. “The concept of communication is an essential part of every profession, and it is required to foster and maintain healthy relationships”( Jasmine, 2009, para. 1).
We are constantly sending and receiving text messages, phone calls, and internet posts, every second of the day. We can get an insight of the good, bad, and the ugly ways a police officer may behave in the public eye because it can instantly be recorded, sent out to anyone around the world and in seconds it can be posted to the internet. Since we live in this day and age, officers have to be careful how they present themselves, therefore communication skills and character is crucial. Being with the Milan police officers, I was able to improve my professional communication skills. Not only do officers have huge responsibilities they also have to be aware of how they carry themselves. As a police officer you want people to be able to talk to you, and you should be able to understand the emotion behind what they are saying, which is when character comes into play. When dealing with the people of the community, you really have to know how to talk to people, no matter what the situation. Communication is used on a regular basis, therefore it is a skill that is a must have no matter what line of work you are in. Communication helps family life, work life, and builds relationships and connections with many people. It can improving teamwork, decision-making, and problem solving in all aspects of life, making life a little bit easier. It allows us to communicate even in a negative or difficult situation without creating conflict. For a police officer, or anyone really, knowing how to communicate with others makes the job a little more manageable. As a police officer, you have to be able to decode and understand the speaker, effectively listen and pay attention to body language. Police officers have to have the ability to manage stress, especially in tough and emergency-like situations. If an officer is unable to do that, their communication would be a disaster. Not only do they
In the fire service communication can be the difference between life and death. Communication is a vital component in saving lives, if used incorrectly the results could be serious injury or death. There are classes and training sessions on communicating properly. When a directive is given by an officer, the recipient of the directions then repeats the directive back to the officer. This not only reassures the officer that said person received the directions, but it gives the officer the ability to hear what he said in case he needs to change something. Even during drills we use communication, we use it when we are checking all of the equipment and making sure it is up to DPSST and OSHA standards. I also use communication everyday during school.
Nonverbal communication is communicating with other people without using any words whether they are written or spoken words (Ruesch & Kees, 1956). Anything nonverbal we do such as eye contact, facial expressions, touching, gestures, body movements, posture, general appearance and dress, our voice tone and smell send strong messages; it doesn’t matter if we were speaking or if we were being completely silent (Segal, Smith, Boose, Jaffe, n. d., para. 2). Usually when you are talking to a person, the person uses all five senses to receive your interaction with him: 83% sight, 11% hearing, 3% smell, 2% touch and 1% taste (The Definitive Book of Body Language, 2004). As Mark Twain said, “Actions speak louder than words” and what that quote basically means is that your behavior and actions count more than the words you are saying. Nonverbal communication speaks more than the words you say so you can say whatever you want to say but it is the nonverbal things like your tone and facial expression that tells what you really mean. Nonverbal communication is important because it tells you what the words do not tell; feelings, mood etc. (Lynn, 2012).
Problem solving is defined as a process of working through details of a problem to reach a solution. The art of problem solving is required and is a vital part of growth. From the beginning of time, problem existed. It is recorded, these things I have spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world (John 16:33 KJV). It is critical for business or individuals that are working through difficult challenges find quality solutions to help maximize results.
Good communication is essential to how well police officers interact with the public because it influences how the public responds to officers. Listening, speaking, writing and focusing on what others say are all ways officers can affect the way the public views them. A lack of these vital communications skills results in poor understanding, an officer not knowing how to proceed, and people who need police assistance giving up. Officers must also consider how communication might affect a community’s reaction. It is obvious that these traits are very important for optimal police work. Experiences show that people react more calmly and cooperatively when police officers treat them well. Therefore, good communication is needed in order to make the jobs of police officers easier and more positive.
...cation is important in everyday work. In addition, there is a need for ongoing communication training for officers even after they entered the force because like firearm training if they don’t receive the necessary training and practice the skill will diminish. It is important to remember that interpersonal communication skills not only help law enforcement officer in difficult situations and conflicts but also provide them with effective ways to communicate with their peers through out the police agencies. As a result of these effective communications the officers can have a better flow of information, resulting in increased productivity.
As in all aspects of personal and professional life, having effective communication is a key element of success. Effective communication can benefit your relationships with people. By conveying your message and integrating them as a member of the team and not just a subordinate leads to better production. By effectively communicating you can clearly define job responsibilities and expectations. The better you are able to communicate the less likely organizational turnover of personnel will occur. Supervisors and leaders in the professional workplace find that the most important factor in advancement and retain ability is effective communication. Senior level executives and human resources managers are stressing the importance of communication and providing more training for mid-level management. Emphasis is placed on communication being clear by being transmitted strongly.
One of the main aspects in communicating is listening. An effective listener is one who, not only comprehends how the speaker feels but, also understands what they are stating. Building a strong connection between the speaker and the listener is one of the first steps to become a good listener. By building this connection speakers should first be in an environment with open minded listeners, it makes them feel more comfortable to state their opinions, feelings and ideas. Listeners should avoid being judgmental. The individual does not have to agree with the ideas, values or opinions of the speaker; however, to fully understand them, one must put aside their criticism. Speakers will believe that they can trust the listeners with their information when they know that they will not be judged. Miscommunication happens frequently, listene...
I learned a lot about Human Communication in this class when I read the chapter about Nonverbal Communication. Nonverbal Communication is the process of using messages that are not words to generate meaning. I learned that it happens every day. I also learned that is very hard to read or understand depending on the person you are speaking to or with. Verbal and Nonverbal codes work in conjunction with each other. The words we speak or say are used in conjunction six different ways: to repeat, to emphasize, to complement, to contradict, to substitute, and to regulate. I never knew until reading this chapter that we do these things all most every time we communicate. These are things I took for granted until now. I now know that I will pay
