“What can performance management offer to learning and development practice within an organisation?”
The objective of this report is to determine if a successful performance management system can offer anything to the learning and development process in an organisation. The report will examine the concepts of performance management and the implications it has on learning and development. It will focus on the major issues surrounding the learning and development process and outline the contributions performance management has to offer.
Introduction
Organisations worldwide are experiencing new challenges due to the increasing of globalization, business complexity and uncertainty in the economic climate. As the business environment becomes more knowledge based, we now see organisations in a different light. They are now knowledge driven institutes that focus on performance and continuous improvement, placing greater significance on human resources, their knowledge and capabilities. Singh (2013). Greater emphasis is now placed on performance management systems as it is seen an important and critical HR activity. However performance management is not a simple and uniform process it is a complex and lengthy process that requires total commitment from all levels of the organisation.
Learning and development contains many different forms. When it is strategically aligned with effective performance management systems, learning and development can enhance productivity, performance and increase staff commitment and loyalty. In conclusion we have looked at the contributing factors that performance management systems have to offer the learning and development process. We have discussed the concepts of performance management as well as the implications it has on learning and development. In today’s current climate, it is essential that organisations link performance management and learning and development processes together. By aligning these two structures organisations can thrive for high levels of performance, with the confidence of having a highly motivated and engaged workforce, a considerable competitive advantage in the global market.
The process of memorization starts at birth with the development of cells and extends throughout the lifetime through the effects of life experiences and stimulants. Like the rest of the body, the brain is made up of cells. These brain cells are different, more specialized cells. (Sprenger 1). Two major brain cells are the neurons- the nerve cells- and the glial cells which work as the ‘glue’ of the neurons. At birth, the brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons. Although that number remains constant over time, these cells can lose their function if not exercised properly in a process called “neutral pruning”. Learning is defined as “two neurons communicating with each other”. A neuron has learned when it has made a connection with another neuron (Sprenger 2).
Babies come into this world with physical, and emotional dependencies to others and learn about the world around them, including about themselves through early human interactions. The role of the parents is to provide a solid, supportive foundation to facilitate interactions creating a secure, loving environment for the child to grow. At the core of the infant’s healthy social development is the mother-child relationship. Parenting style and how well the mother respond to child’s sensory social signals, effect child’s aptitude to bond to others including to their peers. However, other factors are important, such as father involvement, mother’s mental state and peers support.
There comes a time in person’s life when their must make decisions that will further go on to impact their life vastly. For many, that decision is whether to further their education or not. For those who do decide to further their education, they must choose which type of schooling is best, college or vocational schooling. Vocational schooling may appeal to those who are looking for an alternative and less expensive form of education. College, the more standard form of education, gives students the ability to have more flexibility since a variety of careers can be open to them from the major they choose. Both forms of education have its advantages and disadvantages, while benefiting the future of the student in the long run.
Educational Theory is, according to Editor Chris Higgins, "an important forum for scholarship and debate in the foundations of education." First published in May of 1951, the journal is a bimonthly publication that seeks to promote and encourage the continuing development of educational theory, as well as a broad and effective discussion of theoretical problems within the educational profession. It also seeks to advance the development of educational theory within itself, and to address the wider issues of schools, politics, and society. As a future educator, the theories associated with my discipline, and the issues inherent in them, as they have changed over time and as they stand now, are of great interest and importance to me.
In order to understand the functional relationship between learning and memory we have to first define what both learning and memory are. Learning can be described as “the acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, practice, or study, or by being taught” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). “Memory is the means by which we draw on our past experiences in order to use this information in the present” (Sternberg, 1999). Base on this definitions one can conclude memory is essential part of our lives. Without any memory of the past, we would not be able to operate in the present or reminisce about the future. We would not be able to remember what we did a few days ago, what we have accomplished today, or what we intend to do tomorrow. Without memory our ability to learn would not exist. Learning and Memory are linked to our cognitive abilities as well as that of animals. An example that can be used to show the relationship between learning and memory is the study of how a rat behaves in a maze. As we all know rats have been used in experimental mazes since at least the early 20th century. Hundreds if not thousands of studies have looked at how rats run different types of mazes, from T-maze, to radial arm mazes, and to water mazes. These maze studies help scientist study spatial learning and memory in rats. Maze studies helped us uncover general principles about learning that can be applied to several species, including mankind. In today’s modern societies, mazes tend to be used to determine whether different treatments affect learning and memory in rats. In conclusion, each segment of the performance management process holds a vital link to the next. Not unlike knocking over one domino in a series, it has an effect on the next domino. If one portion in the process is dysfunctional, the next may be identical in its dysfunction – and on and on.
Development is the process of growing, forming or creating into something slightly more advanced than before. Development starts during conception and ends during death. Development consists of three developmental domains which are, physical development, cognitive development, and psychosocial development. Each of which involve some form of growing or changing including the changes of moods throughout the lifespan. This management tool does not focus on the organisation and on its employees as well as stakeholders. It is a continuous process that entails that managers make sure that organisational and employee values are corresponding (Aguinis, 2005,p.1/2-1/5).
