“What can performance management offer to learning and development practice within an organisation?”
The objective of this report is to determine if a successful performance management system can offer anything to the learning and development process in an organisation. The report will examine the concepts of performance management and the implications it has on learning and development. It will focus on the major issues surrounding the learning and development process and outline the contributions performance management has to offer.
Introduction
Organisations worldwide are experiencing new challenges due to the increasing of globalization, business complexity and uncertainty in the economic climate. As the business environment becomes more knowledge based, we now see organisations in a different light. They are now knowledge driven institutes that focus on performance and continuous improvement, placing greater significance on human resources, their knowledge and capabilities. Singh (2013). Greater emphasis is now placed on performance management systems as it is seen an important and critical HR activity. However performance management is not a simple and uniform process it is a complex and lengthy process that requires total commitment from all levels of the organisation.

Learning and development contains many different forms. When it is strategically aligned with effective performance management systems, learning and development can enhance productivity, performance and increase staff commitment and loyalty.
