Introduction
In today’s health care system it is important that students are educated and are also collaborative practice-ready when working with other health care professionals to achieve consistency, continuous and reliable care for their patients (Wood, Flavell, Vanstolk, Bainbridge & Nasmith, 2009). Interprofessional education is this concept that teaches students to work and learn by effectively collaborating with other health care professionals to maximise their potential as a profession (WHO, 2010). This in turn will teach students to be work-force ready to share his or her professional knowledge whilst understanding and being respectful of others’ work. This strengthens the workforce as it allows health professionals to make quick, informed decisions as it arises resulting in the delivery of the highest standard quality of care to their patients. Interprofessional education and team collaboration plays an important role in overcoming many challenges faced in the health industry. By understanding the concept of interprofessional education and collaboration, this will help to maximise the professionals’ skills leading to the provision of high and effective quality of care to achieve improved health outcomes (WHO, 2010). In order for the health care system to provide optimal and safe patient care, a number of mechanisms can be implemented to achieve this. Team collaboration and effective communication are the two factors that will provide safe and quality patient care (Gum, Prideaux, Sweet & Greenhill, 2012). An environment with a strong, collaborative working culture will reduce the communication barriers and will in turn decrease the conflicts that may arise within patient care.

True collaboration requires effective communication between the team members in a health care environment. This will allow in the reduction of clinical errors whilst maximising patient’s care. In order for this to occur each of the members must have an understanding of each other’s roles so that mutual respect and trust can be gained. With this understanding, the team members are able to work collaboratively to combat conflicts when they arises in the workplace. Educational programs are put in place to provide further support for all staff to ensure that collaboration grows within the industry.
Nurses should foster collaborative planning to provide safe, high-quality, patient-centered health care. As nurses, we probably know the patients the best since we spend much more time with them than any other members of the care team. We are the liaison between the patient and the rest of the care team. We need to identify a potential problem or issue, and bring it to the attention of the whole care team. We should facilitate mutual trust, respect, shared decision-making, and open communication among all relevant persons in the care of the patients. With the collaborative support of the whole care team, the patients are in a much better position and are more likely to make an informed and deliberate decision. Communication is a process of conferring information between individuals through use of speech, writing or various other means, and is critical to the success of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) (Higgs, McAllister & Sefton, 2012, p. 5; Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Sargeant, Loney & Murphy, 2008). An MDT must use multiple strategies to enhance communication and ensure their success (Doyle, 2008). An effective MDT generates opportunities that benefit healthcare, which is the reason for the recent dominance of inter-professional care in health practice (Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300; Rowlands & Callen, 2013). Many barriers prevent effective communication within inter-professional teams. Lack of communication within MDTs presents challenges to their success, leading to numerous consequences, including the failure of the MDT (London Deanery, 2012; Sargeant et al, 2008). Communication between professionals is the key factor underpinning the potential success or failure of inter-professional teams, the outcome of the functioning of MDTs will either benefit or impair care of patients.
The demands on health care providers to provide the best quality care for patients is increasing. With added responsibilities and demands on our health care workers, it is hard not become overwhelmed and forget the reason and purpose of our profession. Some of the professionals I did not know how exactly they work together in partnership. Example: I was not aware of how a radiology would work with a social work and the outcome of that was that Radiology develop and maintain collaborative relationship with medical colleagues and participates in regular meetings with other professionals activities to meet the needs of a service users therefore they collaborate with Social Workers. The practice of using inter-professional teams in delivering care is not a new concept but current health policy requires professionals work within a multidisciplinary team Department of Health (2001) and entrenched in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008) Code. I partook in an inter-professional education (IPE) module, its primary aim was to develop the knowledge and skills required for professional practice, on both an academic and personal level to enable students of different healthcare professions to work in unison in order to augment the treatment of patients. The World Health Organization (WHO) (2010) describes how IPE involves students from different fields of learning working collaboratively which creates a two-way learning system for students leading to developments in health care.
1. Inter- professional education or IPE is essential in today’s growing health field. IPE is the act of students from different health related professions coming together to study. This type of education facilitates the collaboration of multiple professions in interprofessional practice, in turn improving health outcomes for patients in interprofessional care.
