1. Inter- professional education or IPE is essential in today’s growing health field. IPE is the act of students from different health related professions coming together to study. This type of education facilitates the collaboration of multiple professions in interprofessional practice, in turn improving health outcomes for patients in interprofessional care. Research is limited on the effectiveness of IPE relating to the changes in a patient’s outcomes when its used.
A meta-analysis entitled “Interprofessional education: effects on professional practice and healthcare outcomes” located in Cochrane, discusses the effectiveness of interprofessional education or IPE in comparison with profession-specific education and the comparison of IPE with no educational intervention. The studies concluded that IPE helped in patient satisfaction, collaboration of teams in the emergency department and the operating room resulting in lowered error rates. It also caused better diabetes care. Lastly it assisted in the maintenance of patient care in domestic violence cases and mental health cases. In addition, four of the articles stated they had mixed positive and neutral outcomes and four stated IPE had no impact on practice or patient care. Due to there being no studies comparing IPE to a particular profession education, the understanding of interprofessional interventions are limited. I side with the importance of interprofessional education in attaining a cohesive collaboration among multiple professions in order to help in giving patients the best form of care possible. The medical field is among the largest and ever growing career fields, especially when dealing with Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs). In the 1960’s when the physician shortage began, the medical field created the PA and NP positions to fill in the gaps (Curren, 2007, p. 404). This matter has opened up numerous questions as more and more PAs and NPs begin practicing, especially concerning their education level. Many patients are concerned that they will not get the proper care. PAs/NPs are beneficial to everyday life by providing patients with the necessary skills needed to successfully treat them.
In this event, the matter that is unusual can be the fact that I have experienced and witnessed the process for interprofessional collaboration between the community nurse and other professionals that I have never knew about before. This event made me realize that there are many aspects of community nursing that I have knew about before where in this situation it is the importance and accountability of interprofessional collaboration. From my nursing theory course I have learned that interprofessional collaboration is when the nurse forms relationships with other professionals that enable them to achieve a common goal to deliver care and strengthen the health system and clients involved in it. (Betker & Bewich, 2012, p.30) In this event, our mutual goal is to provide the appropriate care for the patients/residents so they can restore their health after their hip or knee surgery. In the nursing leadership and management textbook it stated “interprofessional practice removes the gatekeeper and allows client access to all caregivers based on expertise needed.” (Kelly & Crawford, 2013, p.35) In this event, my preceptor and I gained knowledge about Revera and will pass on this information to patients who are interested in staying at a retirement home after they discharge from the hospital. One literature talked about how according to the Institute of Medicine, it is critical to have the capacity to work together as part of the interdisciplinary team to assist in delivering high quality, patient-centered care. ... strategy, the outpatient clinic will benefit in several ways. Intra-departmental meetings will be held, both clinic and hospital staff will be present during such meetings. The staff at the clinic will no longer have to decipher through protocol; the outpatient clinic will be represented. This representation will make for a more productive staff. By making changes to the scheduling department and incorporating inter-departmental meetings, schedulers will have a greater respect for technologist’s workload. Customer service at the outpatient clinic will no longer suffer due to communication gaps. By implementing inter/intra-departmental meetings staff will be able to focus more on the patient and provide them with an overall better experience. By making these suggested changes the outpatient clinic will continue to grow and provide quality care to patients.

Communication is a process of conferring information between individuals through use of speech, writing or various other means, and is critical to the success of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) (Higgs, McAllister & Sefton, 2012, p. 5; Rowlands & Callen, 2013; Sargeant, Loney & Murphy, 2008). An MDT must use multiple strategies to enhance communication and ensure their success (Doyle, 2008). An effective MDT generates opportunities that benefit healthcare, which is the reason for the recent dominance of inter-professional care in health practice (Simpson & Patton, 2012, p. 300; Rowlands & Callen, 2013). Many barriers prevent effective communication within inter-professional teams. Lack of communication within MDTs presents challenges to their success, leading to numerous consequences, including the failure of the MDT (London Deanery, 2012; Sargeant et al, 2008). Communication between professionals is the key factor underpinning the potential success or failure of inter-professional teams, the outcome of the functioning of MDTs will either benefit or impair care of patients.

Professional collaboration is an important aspect regarding patient safety in the medical field. This is a time when different kinds off professionals collaborate with one another about a patient’s health status and condition. “Specifically, Interprofessionality is a process by which professionals reflect on and develop ways of practicing that provides an integrated and cohesive answer to the needs of the client/family/population…(involving) continuous interaction and knowledge sharing between professionals” (Black, 2014). The collaboration of different professionals allow for a better decision to be made towards the patient’s health outcomes.

Interprofessional collaboration has been shown to increase access to healthcare, improve outcomes for patients with chronic disease, reduce medical errors, reduce tension and conflict among caregivers, improve the use of clinical resources, and lower rates of staff turnover (Lemieux-Charles & McGuire, 2006). IPE is a means to promote collaboration between health care professions. In a study designed to assess the effectiveness of IPE interventions compared to separate, profession-specific education interventions, 4 of 6 studies found that IPE improved patient satisfaction, collaborative team behaviour, and decreased clinical error in emergency departments (Reeves et al., 2008).
The occupations that I have chosen to analyze using the three elements for this assignment are paraprofessional, what I am currently, and a teacher, what I am going to college to become. Teachers and paraprofessionals work side by side, collaborate, plan, and share many of the same experiences. However, paraprofessionals are often not treated as equals and has created some ethical judgement regarding treatment of the paraprofessionals from other teachers and administrators in the business of education. I want to use this assignment as an opportunity to distinguish the true professional using the elements designed for this course.
