Reflecting upon interprofessional education (IPE), hands on experience is vital for health care students across the Faculty of Health Sciences so that they may continue to develop better communication skills, enhance performance and develop conflict resolution capability in a team situation. Looking back on the online “Stroke and Depression” IPE workshop that was conducted as interprofessional group work has allowed me to gain not only the knowledge about stroke and depression but also the knowledge, skills and attributes required for interprofessional (IP) collaboration practice. I was also responsible for implementing of therapies and interventions initiated by other IP members as I was expected to collaborate with my IP team to ensure positive patient outcomes. The proposed management for identified issues, for example, impaired mobility function were developed by me based on the evidence based tools used in hospitals such as Fall Risk Assessment and Management Tool. The decisions with respect to nursing care and my input in IP team care plan were influenced by not only the complex needs of the patient but also the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) nursing scope of practice, NMBA’s Code of Ethics and Conduct whilst upholding the four fundamental ethical principles: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice. It is obvious that a great deal of interprofessional research has been aimed to educate practitioners and nurses over the past decade for interprofessional practice (Orchard, King, Khalil & Beezina, 2012). The Institute of Medicine (IOM) “The Future of Nursing Leading Change, Advancing Health” (2010) recommend that private and public organizations, nursing programs and associations increase opportunities for nurses to lead and manage collaborative teams. Health care reform has created a shift in the healthcare delivery to place more emphasis on interprofessional health care teams (Sinfield, Donoghue, Horobi & Anderson, 2012). New implications are directed towards continuing education for health care workers to understand the meaning of interprofessional collaboration to support the changes in collaborative practice to improve patient outcomes (Orchard et.al, 2012). Encouraging health care professional to collaborate as a team more effectively may seem as the answer to improve the quality of care, but ineffective communication from team members to collaborate on the care needs often attributed to patient safety issues. Consequently, even when professional collaborative teams work together, there is no means to validate and measure the impact on continuing education for nurses about interprofessional collaborative practice (Sinfield, et al., 2012).

Nurses everywhere face problems and challenges in practice. Most of the challenges occur due to a struggle with the use of ethical principles in patient care. Ethical principles are “basic and obvious moral truths that guide deliberation and action,” (Burkhardt, Nathaniel, 2014). Ethical principles that are used in nursing practice include autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, veracity, confidentiality, justice, and fidelity. These challenges not only affect them, but the quality of care they provide as well. According to the article, some of the most frequently occurring and most stressful ethical issues were protecting patient rights, autonomy and informed consent to treatment, staffing problems, advanced care planning, and surrogate decision making (Ulrich et. al, 2013). This paper explores the legal, ethical and moral issues of three healthcare colleagues by applying the D-E-C-I-D-E model as a foundation of decision making as found in Thompson, Melia, and Boyd (2006). Issues explored will be those of the actions of registered nurse (RN) John, his fiancé and also registered nurse (RN) Jane and the Director of Nursing (DON) Ms Day. Specific areas for discussion include the five moral frameworks, autonomy, beneficence, Non – maleficence, justice and veracity in relation with each person involved as supported by Arnold and Boggs (2013) and McPherson (2011). As a result, she breached the standard 6 which states that “registered nurse should provide a safe, appropriate and responsive quality nursing practice” (NMBA, 2016). Providing the steps to ethically sound excellent care, healthcare providers must acknowledge first the legal and ethical matters involved with proper investigation and then devise a plan for best possible action recognizing the rights of the patient and its benefits followed by the application of the chosen intervention with positive outcome in mind (Wells, 2007). Delivery of excellent and quality of care at a constant level (NMC, 2008) must be marked in any responsibilities and duties of the care provider to promote exceptional nursing practice. The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses has five elements that pertain to the Principle of Autonomy. Each individual element applies to “respect individual persons” (Baillie, McGeehan, Garrett T, M., Garrett R. M., 2013, p.33). In Chapter 2 of the Health Care ethics: Principles and problems text, it discusses thouroghly the consent of an individual to make their own decisions regarding their health and future requests of care. In conclusion, there are numerous legal and ethical issues apparent in the nursing practice. Nurses should study and be as informed as they can with ethics and legality within their field in order to ensure no mistakes occur. Ethical issues vary based on patient’s views, religion, and environment. Nurses are influenced by these same views, but most of the time they are not the same as the patients.
