Identity and Adversity Identity, as defined by Wikipedia, is the “qualities, beliefs, and expressions that make a person.” Characters in stories/films, much similar to people, have their own identity. In some cases, characters, for example like the character in the short film More, by Mark Osborne, lose their identity. Adversity is one of the main factors that contribute to that development; it can cause someone’s identity to become stronger or weaker. The main character in, ‘More,’ faced its own adversity. That adversity shaped it to become the unhappy character we see at the end, looking back at its colorful, happy, childhood. In the film, we see the character going through a mundane life of getting up, going to work, making a product for happiness, (but never achieving it) and then repeating it over and over. The first adversity it faced, was when it got fired making its own product. It was what pushed it to finally complete its …show more content…
invention, and for a short while, it was happy, blissful. It achieved success. The second adversity was its greed, its greed for ‘more.’ Instead of being satisfied with his achievement, it wanted more, leading up to it becoming like its former boss, yelling at a striving worker that wanted to achieve its own goal; losing in the end, its ambition (the fire in its belly) and its identity. Like many other characters and people, I faced my own adversity.
My adversity is anxiety, and sometimes it can get overwhelming for me to be in public places. But, in spite of that, I was looking for a job to earn more credits for my high school diploma. I was seeking a small job, organizing products or something similar to that. Something that’s still in the perimeters of my comfort zone. But the only option that was open for me was volunteering at an elementary school. As a person who has difficulties to simply ask a store worker for something, I was very hesitant to agree. But I always believed to try and face my fears. That the only way to overcome them, was to face them. I realized that if I don’t take this step I will always stay where I am. With that in mind, I decided to go, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made. Of course there were times I wanted to quit, but I got through them. Now I get along really well with the kids, and the teachers that I work with. Overcoming my adversity made my identity
stronger. Adversity is one of the main factors that contribute to an identity. Sometimes making you weaker, like the character in the short film More. Or, like in my case, stronger. I believe that the outcome of your identity depends entirely on your character, and what you stand for.
Everyone struggles with identity at one point in their life. It will eventually happen to everyone. Identity is how people see one another, it is one of the most important things about someone. Identity goes hand in hand with experience. One’s experiences can impact one’s identity.
In Junior and Senior year I was put into a alternative education class so it would be easier for me to speak and I wouldn 't have anxiety. That decision was the best decision. There were 8 kids in the class instead of 35. It got easier and easier for me to speak. I can now voice my own opinion but still be afraid. I don’t really care if people are quirky and I have my flaws. People who truly care about me will look past them. I now help people who are struggling with the same things I went through, because I know what is was like and I don’t want them to go throw the pain and suffering I went through. I try to help others overcome fear of judgment like I had to
Dental professionals have a commitment to respect diversity and create equity of access to dental care for everyone (GDC, 2014). Diversity describes any dimension that can be used to differentiate an individual from others. It requires understanding that each individual is unique and accepting and respecting these individual differences (QCC,2013). These differences could be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender, age, socio-economic status or other ideologies (QCC, 2013). Understanding the impact that these differences may pose is vital in dealing professionally with people from diverse backgrounds and delivering equal treatment for all. Equality refers to identical treatment in dealings quantitates and values (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Thus, creating equality for all might not mean that there are no disparities between different groups. Equity on the other hand refers to fairness and the equality of outcomes and involves recognizing aspects of a system that may disadvantage a certain group and correcting them (Braveman, and Gruskin, 2003). Therefore, in order to overcome potential pitfalls that may create inequity to access, there is a need to explore the different factors encountered in our diverse society that may create these issues. As an example, patients from different ethnic backgrounds may be faced with barriers accounting for the less frequent use of dental care (CQC. 2010). This group will be used as an example and some of the issues behind this inequity of access will be looked at further.
A person’s identity is not something that can be removed, It can only change over time. Some people may feel as if they have lost their identity, but they have not lost it. It is only hidden. Many people have different definitions of identity, but there should only be one, universal definition. The definition of identity is the values someone has, and how said person treats others.
In today’s society there are many words that are used or said without giving it complete thought. For example, the word “identity” is something to which I have never really given much thought or even considered how I identify myself.

Am I Yaman Hussayni or a Syrian? A question that has been stuck in the halls of my brain for the past week. As it seems to be the issue of identity is a complicated one. Do we choose our identity or it chooses us? And what is identity exactly? According to common idea in society identity is a very general word as it has several branches, cultural identity, personal identity, or even educational one are only some of them. To me, identity is the state of mind by which someone is directly recognized as character in public. It is the fragments of our life that will always remain with us, the permanently unchanging parts of us. Our looks, our beliefs, our culture, the places and things
The identity theory of mind holds that states and processes of the mind are identical to states and processes of the brain thus particular psychological states are identical with particular type of physical state. Many objections have been lay out by philosophers who have evaluated this theory one objection that is particularly strong is the Martian and octopus criticism which state that if identity theory is true, than these species should not feel pain, but if they do feel pain than identity theory is not true.
Identity is a state of mind in which someone recognizes/identifies their character traits that leads to finding out who they are and what they do and not that of someone else. In other words it's basically who you are and what you define yourself as being. The theme of identity is often expressed in books/novels or basically any other piece of literature so that the reader can intrigue themselves and relate to the characters and their emotions. It's useful in helping readers understand that a person's state of mind is full of arduous thoughts about who they are and what they want to be. People can try to modify their identity as much as they want but that can never change. The theme of identity is a very strenuous topic to understand but yet very interesting if understood. How the Garcia Girls Lost Their Accents by Julia Alvarez and Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki are two remarkable books that depict the identity theme. They both have to deal with people that have an identity that they've tried to alter in order to become more at ease in the society they belong to. The families in these books are from a certain country from which they're forced to immigrate into the United States due to certain circumstances. This causes young people in the family trauma and they must try to sometimes change in order to maintain a comfortable life. Both authors: Alvarez and Houston have written their novels Is such an exemplifying matter that identity can be clearly depicted within characters as a way in adjusting to their new lives.
The term racism means inequity or injustice based on race. It can also be the principle that talks about the differences in human personality or capacity and that a specific race is absolute to others. This can be as a result of language, traditions and customs, or any feature that the person possesses. The idea of racism has been in existence in the history of humans for a very long time. For the past years, racism of westerners towards those who are not from that region has had more impact than any other type of racism. The most well-known instance of racism that occurred in the West was enslaving Africans. One vital feature of racism, particularly concerning the
Being able to identify with a certain group has been an issue that individuals hesitate with daily. Am I Black, are you a girl, what religion do you practice? These are all common questions that society has forced individuals to concentrate on. Should an individual have to pick a side or is it relevant to the human race to identify with any group? One may believe not, but for others having and knowing one’s own identity is important, because it is something that they have been developing their entire life. Along with how their identity influenced their life chances and their self-esteem. This can also affect how society interact with whatever identity an individual chooses to live. Which is why it was important to recognize how identifying
Quest for identity can be very important to developing a character of a paly or novel. A quest for identity can be very interesting and entertaining for the reader. In the two stories of Heart of Darkness and A Doll’s House the quest for identity is almost the entire plot, for the characters to discover either who they are or to change the way that they think. In both stories the quest for identity is a struggle and it tests the abilities of the characters. Identity is something that is involved in every story written and it allows the reader to see who the character really is inside and out.
Identity is constructed of personality traits, feelings, values and beliefs, interest and ample other aspects within itself. Identity differs from person to person. It is what makes us our own, it makes us like no other. Most importantly, identity makes our world diverse and rich in complexity. Reflecting on my own identity, I recognize similarities to Daphne’s love of hunting, Gregor Samsa being misunderstood by those around him, and the lack of belonging felt by Pat Mora.
Respect towards racial identity is extremely imperative because of reasons yet to be stated. When in the course of time, it is crucial to look at the social construct of our world, which we depend on to create a working economy, and to construct a life where people can depend on brethren, and have a place of worship where people where there is amity, persons need to fathom what respect towards racial identity is, so that there is not a complete forfeiture. Promptly, it is time to look at what citizens are speaking about persons from other races, and strike out a strong statement against the outrageous proclamations made by our own communities. Persons are abdicating their role in humanity, and they are deriving their powers from internal thoughts and not unity.
Diversity is a value that shows respect for the differences and similarities of age, sex, culture, ethnicity, beliefs and much more. Having a diverse organization, helps notice the value in other people and also how to teach respect to people that might not know how. The world is filled with different cultures and people that might believe in different things as you, but that doesn’t mean you need to treat them any different. It is imperative for people to grasp diversity because it’ll help people how to engage with others in a respectful yet a hospitable way.
