To be health literate is something that cannot only help you, but others. It’s to have a simple four skills which includes: effective communication, self-directed learning, critical learning, and responisible citizenship. The skills do take some work, but with self-discipline and being able to realize the importance of the knowledge, results will begin to show. Health literacy keeps you more informed about your health and what can effect it. One of the skills is your ability to effectivally communiticate your knowledge and beliefs about health. Personally I believe this is one of my stronger skills. I’m always sharing my fun facts about health, giving workout tips, and even telling people that their gatorade should be half-water(thank you Mrs. Lettner). This is one of the easier skills to improve because it could be as simple as looking up a simple health fact and spreading it around to people. Although it is a very simple one, I also find it to be one of the most important because when someone tells me a fact or belief about what can help my health, I always look it up to see if it’s true and from that way, I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about my personal health. The next skill I’d to discuss is self-directed …show more content…
This skill is one that focuses more on your community than yourself. This is to behave in ways that improve your home, school, community, and the world. You can do so by keeping your neighborhood clean, volunteering in your community, and knowning about the local health issues. Another thing that you can do, is to do your best at always setting a good example for others to hope that they do the same. One one end I believe I do a great job with this skill with setting a good example about working hard and picking up trash whenever I see it, but I do know that I need to volunteer more and set a better example with my atitiude when I’m approached with something I don’t like or interests
I want to be a physician assistant. I am interested in this career because I like how physician assistants can work in several different specialties. This will give me choices to change my specialty if I do not like the one that I originally choose. Also, I have always been a lifetime learner and I would like to try out different specialties. This will help me to gain more knowledge. After working as a physician assistant, If I decide to become a doctor then I can do that too. I love working with patients. Being a physician assistant would help me to interact more with people and will give me a chance to help others.
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). A Licensed Practical Nurse has various of roles that they have to manage on a day to day basis, such as being an advocate for their patients, an educator, being a counselor, a consultant, researcher, collaborator, and even a manager depending on what kind of work exactly that you do and where. It is the nursing process and critical thinking that separate the LPN from the unlicensed assistive personnel. Judgments are based
Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. With our ever changing life styles and the increased levels of pollution across the world more and more people are suffering from various health issues. Nursing is an extremely diverse profession and among the highest educated with several levels ranging from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) on up to a Doctorate in Nursing. Diane Viens (2003) states that ‘The NP is a critical member of the workforce to assume the leadership roles within practice, education, research, health systems, and health policy’.
Each individual gets to a point in life whereby they assess their internal qualities, people reflect their profession aspirations and attempt to see which careers will make them happy in their lives. It is also important for a person to consider whether they have the qualities needed for a particular profession and also consider the available resources that will help him or her reach their set goals (Chafey, Rhea, Shannon, & Spencer, (1998). Every human being has weaknesses and strengths in their personal or professional aspirations. Having strength means that someone has the physical and mental power to perform things in a successful manner. On the other hand, weaknesses are the drawbacks, the inadequate lack of strength or power to accomplish important goals in life, and every human has some potential of being a leader in some way (American Association of Critical Care Nurses (2006). This paper will discuss the outcome results inventory on the nurse as a manager, it illustrates personal strength and weaknesses in relation to personal life and professional aspirations. The paper will also discuss planning for career, disciplines in personal expedition, practice
Health literacy is a term not widely understood by the general population. It is defined as “the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic health information needed to make appropriate health decisions and services needed to prevent or treat illness,” (About health literacy, 2014). A person’s level of health literacy is based on their age, education level, socioeconomic standing, and cultural background. Patients with low health literacy have a more difficult time navigating the health care system. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, this group of patients may find it harder to find medical services and health care providers, fill out health forms, provide their complete medical history with their providers, seek preventative care, understand the health risks associated with some behaviors, taking care of chronic health conditions, and understanding how to take prescribed medications (About health literacy, 2014). It is to a certain extent the patient’s responsibility to increase their own health literacy knowledge. But to what extent can they learn on their own? Those working in the health field have been trained to navigate the health system and understand the medical terms. They have the knowledge and capability to pass on that understanding to their patients. Health care professionals have a shared responsibility to help improve patients’ health literacy.
Another strength that I have is being an active listener. I listened to my clients and utilized a lot of micro skills. Insuring confidentiality was also a strength that I developed closer to the end of field placement. Conducting assessments and making sure I tracked and exhausted the topics was also a strength that I identified throughout field. Practicing from a strengths perspective was also another area I excelled at when working with my clients. A skill that I could work on is being more conscious of self in terms of body language during interviews, because at times I find myself with my arms cross which may give an indication that I’m closed off or
The most common problem in medicine these days is communication from the provider and medical staff to the patient receiving and understanding the information. That’s why I’m going to write about health literacy. Health literacy is the capability to obtain, process, and realize the fundamental health information and services to make suitable health decisions. This is necessary to encourage people and societies to be healthy. Health care institutions and public health systems perform a critical role in health literacy because they can make it easier or more complex for people to find and use health information and services. There are national data to

It required students to learn literacy in science subjects in order to increase the scientific vocabulary. Simply, health literacy means ‘constellation of skills, including the ability to perform basic reading and numerical tasks required to function in the health care environment’ (Bresolin 1999). Beyond reading and numeracy skills, health literacy is further defined as ‘the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain and process and understand basic health related information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions (US Department of Health and Human Services 2007). The World Health Organization (1998) points out that health literacy as ‘the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health’. These definitions suggest that the focus of health literacy has been shifted to a broader range, from individual capacity to social perspective. It emphasises not only the communication abilities but also the environmental factors such as support and empowerment from the community that enable individuals to make appropriate
Such skills as communication, creativity, and critical thinking. I would argue that critical thinking is easily the most important because if one does not critically think about something they will not be creative. Also, if they do not critically think before they begin to communicate eventually no one will listen.

The skill that I am the best at or at least would give myself the highest score in would be showing empathy. I am not sure why I am skilled in this it just seems to come naturally to me. I have always found myself to be a very empathetic person who is able to understand the thoughts, feelings, beliefs and, attitudes of others almost as well as my own. One way that I have shown empathy is by being open to learning about the experiences of others including other cultures, races and religions. Learning about struggles of others and the impact their struggles have on the world as a whole has increased my ability to show empathy. I think that my empathetic nature has both helped me and hurt me in my life. It has helped me as a counselor, as

Good people skills are very important in a group setting because of all the di...
