Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. With our ever changing life styles and the increased levels of pollution across the world more and more people are suffering from various health issues. Nursing is an extremely diverse profession and among the highest educated with several levels ranging from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) on up to a Doctorate in Nursing. Diane Viens (2003) states that ‘The NP is a critical member of the workforce to assume the leadership roles within practice, education, research, health systems, and health policy’. These core competencies are guidelines that build upon existing core competencies and help to prepare NPs in implementing a full scope of practice as a licensed practitioner (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012). These competencies promote consistency and quality.

Scientific Foundation Competencies As a NP in the urgent care field K.W. analyzes lab data during many visits. This competency focuses on skills, understandings and integrative abilities and this helps the APN with basic foundation in being able to translate results into the proper patient outcomes (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012).
Quality Competencies K.W. often needs to communicate his knowledge both to the patient and in the patient’s chart. This competency relates to assessing for the best available evidence to influence healthcare outcomes (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012).
Leadership Competencies
As an NP K.W. often needs to collaborate with other disciplines and thus this competency holds a major role in the care of patients to drive high-quality and cost-effective care (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012).
Independent Practice
I now that I have the knowledge to aspire to take up my role within one of the identified population foci. APRNs program developed my core competencies by allowing me to be more efficient adaptability with regards to newly emerging APRN roles or population focus. Furthermore, achieving my course objectives enable me to understand the specific APRN roles. For example, course objectives provide me with a better detail, and align my licensure goals with the responsibilities expected of each role. Licensure will provide me and my fellow APRN graduates with the full authority to practice. Also, certification is required to meet the highest possible standards as APRNs are expected to align knowledge, skills and experience with the standards of health care professionals. This field has very narrow margins for error, and it is therefore important, for APRNs to meet the highest and most stringent academic qualifications. In order to be a recognized as APRN graduate, one is required to complete formal education with a graduate degree or post-graduate certificate awarded by an academic institute and accredited by a recognized accrediting agency empowered by the relevant government education
The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is the governing body of all registered nurses in Ontario and is regulated. The CNO provides expectations and guidelines to follow, which need to be met by each Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) individually. As a nursing student, I am taught about the CNO and the importance of referring back to the guidelines while caring for patients. There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses make up the single largest healthcare profession in the United States. The Doctor of Nursing Practice Essentials were created to ensure advanced practice nurses curricular elements were sufficient to prepare them for their role in practice at a the terminal level. The Essentials draw a clear distinction between the DNP and the PhD prepared nurse by centering on leadership, knowledge and skill (Sperhac & Clinton, 2008). The Future of Nursing Being a registered nurse affords one the option of working in many diverse healthcare settings. In any practice setting, the climate of health care change is evident. There are diverse entities involved in the implementation and recommendation of these practice changes. These are led by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Institute of Medicine (IOM), nursing campaign for action initiatives, as well as individual state-based action coalitions. Nurses need to be prepared and cognizant of the transformations occurring in health care settings, as well as the plans that put them at the forefront of the future.
