Healthcare is a continuous emerging industry across the world. With our ever changing life styles and the increased levels of pollution across the world more and more people are suffering from various health issues. Nursing is an extremely diverse profession and among the highest educated with several levels ranging from a licensed practical nurse (LPN) to a registered nurse (RN) on up to a Doctorate in Nursing. Diane Viens (2003) states that ‘The NP is a critical member of the workforce to assume the leadership roles within practice, education, research, health systems, and health policy’. These core competencies are guidelines that build upon existing core competencies and help to prepare NPs in implementing a full scope of practice as a licensed practitioner (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012). These competencies promote consistency and quality.
In 1990 a group of educators, called the National Task Force for Family Nurse Practitioner Curriculum and Evaluation, created the initial curriculum guidelines for nurse practitioners (Graduate nurse practitioners education competencies, n.d.).Today, the NONPF represents most NP educational institutions worldwide and they continue to develop/improve the NP competencies and guidelines in order to prepare healthcare professionals across the world (Graduate nurse practitioners education competencies, …show more content…

K.W. reiterated how important these competencies are in creating a uniformed and prepared APN.
Scientific Foundation Competencies As a NP in the urgent care field K.W. analyzes lab data during many visits. This competency focuses on skills, understandings and integrative abilities and this helps the APN with basic foundation in being able to translate results into the proper patient outcomes (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012).
Quality Competencies K.W. often needs to communicate his knowledge both to the patient and in the patient’s chart. This competency relates to assessing for the best available evidence to influence healthcare outcomes (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012).
Leadership Competencies
As an NP K.W. often needs to collaborate with other disciplines and thus this competency holds a major role in the care of patients to drive high-quality and cost-effective care (National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012).
