Topic #8 Geothermal Energy
The race for a sustainable efficient power source has been an ongoing problem for the world. Global users are now waking up to the facts that these will not sustain us forever as they have made a large human footprint upon the earth that we so desperately depend on. This race has resulted in a very positive effect on the global pursuit of greener more sustainable energy and has helped in developing new technologies. These technologies range from wind powered turbines, solar paneled power stations and harnessing and using the heat from the molten layer of rock below the surface called geo thermal energy. This article is going to be focusing on the renewable natural energy of geo thermal, from the history to what is geothermal energy, and even what the advantages and disadvantages are.
First let’s begin with the history of geothermal, it goes back a lot further than you would think. Geothermal can be traced back to over 10,000 years ago to being used by the Paleo Indians with their homes being near hot springs. Evidence shows that the Indians used the hot springs for activities that included heating of their homes and bathing. They even saw the hot springs as a healing source, which is agreeable if you have ever sat in one of those things, then you have experienced firsthand the primitive use of geothermal energy. In 1922, the first geothermal power plant in the U.S. went down in history for producing 250 Kilowatts of power, which could successfully light the streets and buildings in the area. As technology development progresses on geothermal plants, it will become more of a supplier for the worlds increasing demand for power, and yet will continue to run as a clean natural and renewable energy source providing businesses, industries and homes with sustainable energy.

Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. Thermal energy is the energy that determines the temperature of matter. Due to this effect, it widely impact lives and cultures around its area. During winter, temperatures of the whole Yellowstone will drop to 0 degree Fahrenheit, and the snow thickness reaches 20 inches. In addition, an elevation of 7,733 feet (2,357 m) above sea level forms rarefied air in Yellowstone area. All of these show a severe circumstance for any plants or animals. However, geothermal energy in Yellowstone changes this condition.

Some climate scientists such as Ken Caldeira believe that humans will never reduce greenhouse gas emissions and that the earth will eventually return to the climate of the Cretaceous period due to climate change (How Far Can Climate Change Go?, 2012). There is enough evidence to suggest that this will not happen. Thanks to our individual senses of environmental consciousness, our uses and further research of alternative energy sources and fuels, and the potential for space colonization and exploration. We still have a chance to reverse our impact on the planet because of further advancements in technology and a sense of global consciousness.

The United States currently relies heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for its energy. While the price of natural gas per barrel continues to plummet, the United States is constantly seeking new sources of renewable energy. Nowadays, dependence on fossil fuels for energy needs becoming lower in numerous countries due to the potential of renewable energy to supply sustainable energy to the huge populations in many developing countries who are short of clean and continues energy. Generally, renewable energy can be defined as energy that is derived from natural resources which are constantly replenished and theoretically inexhaustible. Fossil fuels on the other hand can be described as energy that cannot be renewed and will eventually diminish. Thus, in many developing countries renewable energy is the alternative energy to replace non-renewable energy or commonly known as fossil fuels. In addition, according to Sorensen (2004), there is a greater demand for renewable energy sources nowadays due to the uncertainty of fuel price rise in living expenses. Commonly, there are many types of renewable energy available in our world such as wind power, biomass energy, solar energy, hydroelectric power and geothermal energy. However, the main three example of renewable energy are hydroelectric power, solar and biomass energy (Refer to Figure 1 in Appendix 1).
Geothermal energy is one of the oldest sources of energy. It is simply using and reusing (reusable energy) heat from the inside of the earth. Most of the geothermal energy comes from magma, molten or partially molten rock. Which is why most geothermal resources come from regions where there are active volcanoes. Hot springs, geysers, pools of boiling mud, and fumaroles are the most easily exploited sources. The ancient Romans used hot springs to heat baths and homes, and similar uses are still found in Iceland, Turkey, and Japan. The true source of geothermal energy is believed to come from radioactive decay occurring deep within the earth.

One of the most compelling arguments for the use of renewable energy is how many forms exist of it.
