Geothermal is energy produced from the heat of the earths core. It is a natural resource that is very plentiful. Heat contained in the earth is so intense it creates molten magma. There are different types of geothermal energy. Some are formed with magma near the earth’s surface and heats groundwater. The steam from this is turned into geothermal energy, which is electricity produced from the steam of the water.
Other geothermal energy can be produced from the heat of rocks. The heat of the rocks is used because there is no magma near by. The rocks are heated by the magma deep below the earth’s surface. To produce this, water is run through the rocks heating the water to produce geothermal energy.
The amount of heat and quantity is very high to produce geothermal energy; even though it is a very good source of energy there are downfalls. Geothermal is not a widespread source of energy. Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the Earth. Thermal energy is the energy that determines the temperature of matter. Due to this effect, it widely impact lives and cultures around its area. During winter, temperatures of the whole Yellowstone will drop to 0 degree Fahrenheit, and the snow thickness reaches 20 inches. In addition, an elevation of 7,733 feet (2,357 m) above sea level forms rarefied air in Yellowstone area. All of these show a severe circumstance for any plants or animals. However, geothermal energy in Yellowstone changes this condition.

In 1960, Pacific Gas and Electric began operation of the first successful geothermal electric power plant in the United States at The Geysers in California. The original turbine lasted for more than 30 years and produced 11 MW net power. The binary cycle power plant was first demonstrated in 1967 in the U.S.S.R. and later introduced to the U.S. in 1981. Nuclear energy is produced from the splitting of millions of uranium atoms in a very interesting process called fission. This type of process is used in big power plants where there are numerous tools and machinery that help produce the energy. From generators to pumps to turbines and transformers there are up to 12 main components that all come and work together to create high amounts of electricity. The fission process is used to produce a lot of heat and steam from the reactor where uranium rods are placed. That very hot steam then travels to big turbines and spins them through the generator to generate and produce high amounts of electricity. The electricity then travels to transformers and from there it travels through land wires that run hundreds of miles into cities and towns (World Nuclear Association [WNA], 2014).
Volcanoes obtain their energy from such movement and pressure. Volcanoes form at the boundaries of these plates where two types of movement occur: two plates will collide with each other, or the plates will move apart from each other. Some of these plate layers are cooled and are made up of rigid rocks. The effects on the landscape are lava that releases onto the Earth's surface. When that lava comes to the Earth's surface, it is red hot, and sometimes the temperature is more than 2012 degrees Fahrenheit.
One form of alternative energy is called geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is thermal energy that is created and stored beneath earth’s crust. The most recognizable form of geothermal to most people would be in the form of a hot spring. Heat from Earth’s core heats rock and water differently; some spots can reach up to 700 degrees, whereas some receive not much heat at all. Steam from the water that receives the most heat is trapped in porous rocks underground. This is called a geothermal reservoir. Geothermal energy is very useful because it is renewable, and limitless. Heat continuously flows from the earth’s core, and continues to heat the water and produce steam. Geothermal is also useful because it is 80 percent cheaper than fossil fuels, and it requires no fuel. In fact, the use of geothermal energy decreases the independence on fossil fuels greatly. The United States currently relies heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for its energy. While the price of natural gas per barrel continues to plummet, the United States is constantly seeking new sources of renewable energy. Renewable energy consists of any type of natural resource (solar power, ocean power, wind power, rain, snow, etc.) that naturally and automatically replenishes itself. Renewable energy is important because it is infinite and everlasting, meaning our children and our children’s children will be able to utilize these resources long after we are gone. I believe the only way the United States and the world will see a large-scale transition to renewable energy sources is through education. Geothermal energy is one of the oldest sources of energy. It is simply using and reusing (reusable energy) heat from the inside of the earth. Most of the geothermal energy comes from magma, molten or partially molten rock. Which is why most geothermal resources come from regions where there are active volcanoes. Hot springs, geysers, pools of boiling mud, and fumaroles are the most easily exploited sources. The ancient Romans used hot springs to heat baths and homes, and similar uses are still found in Iceland, Turkey, and Japan.
