GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Geothermal energy is one of the oldest sources of energy. It is simply using and reusing (reusable energy) heat from the inside of the earth. Most of the geothermal energy comes from magma, molten or partially molten rock. Which is why most geothermal resources come from regions where there are active volcanoes. Hot springs, geysers, pools of boiling mud, and fumaroles are the most easily exploited sources. The ancient Romans used hot springs to heat baths and homes, and similar uses are still found in Iceland, Turkey, and Japan. The true source of geothermal energy is believed to come from radioactive decay occurring deep within the earth.
Electricity is one of the biggest outputs of geothermal energy. It was first recorded to produce electricity in 1904 in Italy. There are now geothermal power plants in operation in New Zealand, Japan, Iceland, the US and elsewhere.
For the generation of electricity, hot water, at temperatures ranging from about 700 degrees F, is brought from the underground reservoir to the surface through production wells, and is flashed to steam in special vessels by release of pressure. The steam is separated from the liquid and fed to a turbine engine, which turns a generator. In turn, the generator produces electricity. Spent geothermal fluid is injected back into peripheral parts of the reservoir to help maintain reservoir pressure. If the reservoir is to be used for direct-heat application, the geothermal water is usually fed to a heat exchanger before being injected back into the earth. Heated domestic water from the output side of the heat exchanger is used for home heating, greenhouse heating, vegetable drying and a wide variety of other uses.
Hot water and steam exist at many subsurface locations in the western U.S.
These resources can be classified as low temperature (less than 194 degrees F), moderate temperature (194 – 302 degrees F), and also high temperature (greater than 302 degrees F). The uses to which these resources are applied are also influenced by temperature. If the reservoir is to be used for direct-heat application, the geothermal water is usually fed to a heat exchanger before being injected back into the earth. Warmer water temperature discharged by waste industrial heat into water can affect many aquatic species that cannot tolerate the warmth. A higher level of temperature can result in low oxygen concentrations by speeding up the rate of decomposition of organic matter. "The discharges are often associated with coal-or nuclear-fuelled power plants, and sometimes with large factories." (H.J. Dorcey). The increase of heat materials dumped into water can increase the temperature level in the water bodies and can affect all living organisms within that body. There are many disadvantaging technology which has been affecting water and raising the water temperature from normal. For example, electric power plants might withdraw water from nearby water bodies for the purpose of cooling in the plant and then return the heated water back to the same water body. This is insanely affecting the regular temperature. If the water is not the same, it can lead to many damages within the water body. For example, fishes will dies exhausted from the warmth and it will also affect other aquatic organisms causing them to boil in the water caused by others, sacrificing these creatures. Water from excessively heating up can be best prevented by using special cooling towers and ponds that disperse the energy into the
What is the first thing that comes to mind what you think of the word ‘addiction’? What image pops up in your head when you picture a heroin addict, or intravenous drug user, or user of other opiates? People in rags, dirty, living in alleys or squatting in an abandoned building with others in the same circumstance. These questions are hard to answer, and you don’t always know why your imagination jumps to conclusions when associating with certain things or groups with one another; it just does. It may be especially difficult to understand why those associations occur when thinking about addiction. This is probably because images, stigmas and exclusion of addicts from society have been centuries in the making, slowly becoming the inherently linked. Although it is hard to fully understand our inherent beliefs, as our knowledge and understanding of drug addiction grows, it is unfair to continue to stigmatize addicts according to ancient stereotypes of addiction. If we continue to stigmatize addicts and addiction, it will only push addicts further into the underground subculture, away from any help they may need. Deeper social internalization of the stereotypic labeling will ultimately lead to the addicts continued use and unsuccessful freedom from the drug.
Geothermal heating and cooling is doing through a geothermal heat pump, geothermal heat pump use the stable temperatures that occur within the first thousand feet of Earth’s surface. This area of the Earth’s surface is called the lithosphere the temperatures in this area can be between forty and eighty degrees Fahrenheit. Geothermal heat pumps can be no more than five hundred feet below the Earth’s surface, the temperature in this area is between fifty and sixty degrees Fahrenheit which is ideal for regulating temperature of buildings. Geothermal heat pumps are able to heat the building in the colder months and cool building in hotter months by transferring heat energy from the ground to the air at the surface through use of a fluid. There are two types of geothermal heat pump systems: the closed loop the fluid is in a system of looping pipes buried in the ground, the other is an open loop system that uses groundwater as a heat exchanger.
...Kroeker designed the first commercial geothermal heat pump to heat the Commonwealth Building in Portland, Oregon and demonstrated it in 1946. In 1960, Pacific Gas and Electric began operation of the first successful geothermal electric power plant in the United States at The Geysers in California. The original turbine lasted for more than 30 years and produced 11 MW net power. The binary cycle power plant was first demonstrated in 1967 in the U.S.S.R. and later introduced to the U.S. in 1981. This technology allows the generation of electricity from much lower temperature resources than previously. (Wikipedia, 2011)
Drug addiction is one of the hardest things to overcome in life. Once a person becomes addicted to drugs, not only does it affect them, but it affects everyone around them. There are many options for addicts, but it is very hard to admit being an addict. Drug users should have the option of what method they would like to take in order to help them with their addiction. Options, like psychotherapy and education, can be positive for the addict and help change the attitude of the addict for the better. To non- addicts, another way would be serving jail time for your “crime”. Others believe that drugs should become decriminalized so that there would people doing “illegal” things. While some either disagree or agree with jail time, the real problem at hand is how society will change when given the resources or the punishment of abusing drugs. According to California State University, “There are many people and
After the condensation process is finished and the steam reverts back to water, it is pumped into the reactor again, thus completing the process of producing nuclear-based power. Next, hydro-electricity is electricity produced by moving water, flowing past a turbine connected to a generator (“Hydropower”). According to Nationalgeographic.com, a typical hydro-plant is a system with three parts: an electric plant where electricity is produced, a dam that can be opened or closed to control water flow, and a reservoir where water can be stored.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Drugs affect people in many different ways. One person can take abuse drugs, yet never become addicted, while another person has one experience and is immediately hooked to that drug. Drug addiction is defined as a dependence on an illegal drug, or medication. When you are addicted, you cannot control your drug use despite the fact that you know the consequences. The scary thing is that drug addiction can cause a major intense craving of drugs. Even though you want to stop, most people can’t do it on their own it is very difficult, and most need therapeutic help. For many people this is what is going to lead them to their death, or a long term mental/physical disability. Being addicted will also affect your relationships with friends and family as well as your employment status. Illegal drug abuse and addiction cost individual Americans upward of half a trillion dollars annually. This could be through medical, criminal, or even social expenditures. Drug use also contributes to an estimated 440,000 deaths by overdose per year. For the United States government, it costs hundreds of billions of dollars in increased health care, crime, and lost productivity. What can we do to prevent or help hopeless addicts from drug abuse and addictions? And whats our law enforcement officers doing about this situation?
They should not mine hydrothermal vents. Mining them sea life is put at risk. By mining the sea life is inured and or killed. Along with sea life the ecosystem is also killed. The chemicals produced from this process kills anything in it’s path. Although many bad things happen they do receive some good things out of this process, like learning more about our earth. While the machines are under the ocean they discover many new minerals and important things. Hydrothermal vents are dangerous and shouldn’t be used as much as they are now.
Addiction often time leads to an individual’s health declining, their financial security declines. Drug addicts have a hard time keeping a job, which leads to having trouble with the law, and sometimes even leads to being homeless. Drug addiction is a sickness, if it is not being taken serious, and without the right kind of treatment addicts will just find their way back to using, even after they have served their time in prison. The Administration’s National Drug Control Strategy recognizes that addiction is a disease, and that the criminal justice system can play a vital role in reducing the costs and consequences of crimes committed by drug-involved offenders. If drug addicts received proper treatment and proper help needed to overcome the addiction, which will give those individuals a new opportunity to live a clean healthy life, and will contribute to society in a positive
Drug abuse and addiction are issues that affect people everywhere. However, these issues are usually treated as criminal activity rather than issues of public health. There is a conflict over whether addiction related to drug abuse is a disease or a choice. Addiction as a choice suggests that drug abusers are completely responsible for their actions, while addiction as a disease suggests that drug abusers need help in order to break their cycle of addiction. There is a lot of evidence that suggests that addiction is a disease, and should be treated rather than punished. Drug addiction is a disease because: some people are more likely to suffer from addiction due to their genes, drug abuse brought on by addictive behavior changes the brain and worsens the addiction, and the environment a person lives in can cause the person to relapse because addiction can so strongly affect a person.
Water is used for hydropower and thermal power plants , steam generation , rotating turbine and for cooling purposes . Although power consumes huge amounts of water , it is used almost without losses , in a closed loop . It is estimated that in the middle of the twenty -first century, water consumption worldwide will exceed its natural flow . To solve this problem , different ways of getting fresh water are developed.
Illegal drugs are used by people as a way out when feeling down about themselves. As the effects of the drugs may stay the same throughout, causes show that there are a large number of reasons for use. Being lonely, isolated, and frustrated in life help start off the drive to escape. In many cases, using drugs is a coping mechanism, especially in teens. Emotions become numb as people try to escape the pain of reality. This is seen in the youth of today as they deal with everyday pressures.. Drug abuse can make people think they are re-creating their former negative self image. This rebellious action gives the attention that is desired. From trying to fit in to hiding from problems, people will always have a choice. In the end, the reality of drug use is damaging to the user's body, mind and relationships.
Drug addiction is a very big problem in today’s society. Many people have had their lives ruined due to drug addiction. The people that use the drugs don’t even realize that they have an addiction. They continue to use the drug not even realizing that their whole world is crashing down around them. Drug addicts normally lose their family and friends due to drug addiction.
