Part I:
The gastroenterology department at a hospital specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and liver. The physicians in this department are Gastroenterologists, who may perform approximately 30,000 minimally invasive, endoscopic procedures. Due to the vast number of diseases that can affect all parts of the Gastrointestinal tract, including the alimentary canal and accessory organs, these specialists are extremely important and can be vital to the health of anyone. These doctors specialize in but are not limited to the mouth, stomach, colon, small and large intestine, teeth, liver, tongue, salivary glands. (Mayo Clinic, 2010).
Part II:
A 21 year old woman was referred by her gastroenterologist to the gastroenterology department of the local hospital after frequently experiencing bloody stool, paresthesia, stomach and head aches, tiredness, and asthenia. Patient was given an fecal occult blood test, which resulted in positive finding of Hematochezia. Blood tests also showed leukocytosis and an abdomen examination of the right lower quadrant hypogastric region reveled swelling of the large and small intestine as well as pain for the patient. She then was recommended that she followed the exam with a colonoscopy. The results validated microscopic ulcerative colitis and celiac disease. Though no prescriptions were given, a referral to a dietician was made and instructions were given to ingest probiotics daily and remove gluten from her diet. Future treatments include an annual colonoscopy and possible hospitalization for vitamin deficiency.

4.) Hematochezia is a medical term for when fresh blood is found in your stool. This usually happens when something internally in your digestive tract is bleeding. There are many reasons why something inside of your stomach could be bleeding. This can be very serious and should be addressed immediately.
5.) Fecal occult blood test is a test given to patients that are complaining of stomach problems including irregular stool, pain, and blood. The patient is given materials to catch a stool at home and then sends them to a lab. This test is given to find microscopic red blood and other irregular cells. This test gives doctors a better idea of what is going on and allows them to proceed forward with more tests or treatment for what is found.
(What is....2016). The first documented case of Crohn’s disease suspected was King Alfred in 850 A.D. This disease is named after a Jewish man named Dr. Burrill Bernard Crohn (1884-1983) who became interested in the condition as his father, also a Dr, suffered from a disorder of the bowel. He devoted his career to “regional enteritis” the disease that now bares his name. It is necessary to understand the disease to be able to provide care for people who are afflicted by it (de Campos and Kotze 2013). Especially since Crohn’s is a chronic disease or a lifelong affliction it’s important to understand etiology, it’s symptoms, treatments, and to maintain the disease and the psychological well being of the patient managed (Crohn’s...2015).
Crohn’s disease is a chronic disorder of the digestive system. I can affect any area of the gastrointestinal system from the mouth to the anus. Its inflammatory process may spread to include skin, eyes, joints, mouth and sometimes the liver (Chang, 2008). Males and females appear to be affected proportionately. Crohn’s disease can occur in people of any age, but it is mostly a disease of adolescents and young adults. However, Crohn’s disease may occur in people over 70 years old and in young children (Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America, 2009).
and did not believe that bacteria could be responsible for GIT (gastrointestinal tract) diseases. The first observations of bacteria in the stomach were presented in 1875, when two German anatomists, Bottcher and Letulle, found spiral bacteria colonizing the mucus layer of the human stomach, , in patients with gastric ulcers. However, as they were unable to cultivate the bacteria, the scientific community ignored their results. [4]( [4] Blaser MJ. An endangered species in the stomach. Irregular bowel movements or constipation is quite a major and common concern in adults and babies as well. The condition becomes more challenging when it comes to babies. Parents of infants worry when their infant’s bowel movement is not regular and clear as that causes formation of gas and stomach pain.
An article published in Lancet in 1989 by Bennet and Brinkman, reported the first use of FMT for treatment of Irritable Bowel Disorder. Bennet was diagnosed with UC himself and performed a trial of self-transplanted donor stool by retention enema. He would take the stool and reconstitute it with saline in order to be administered through an enema. Three months later colon biopsies showed improvement in inflammation and he remained symptom free for six months (Clinical and Experimental Gastroenterology, 2015). There
IBS is a functional GI disorder, meaning it cannot be explained by any specific structural or biochemical abnormality. The disorder is subdivided into three different types, which are named on the basis of the predominant symptom – IBS-D (diarrhea-predominant), IBS-C (constipation-predominant), IBS-M (mixed diarrhea and constipation). Clinical presentation varies considerably with regard to the quality of the predominant feature and the overall severity of symptoms. Formal diagnosis is based on the most recent Rome III criteria, which require that a patient experience recurrent abdominal discomfort of at least 3 days per month over the previous 3 months, with a total symptom duration of at least 6 months, in...
Crohn’s disease is a disease that causes inflammation, swelling, and irritation to any part of the digestive tract which is also known as the gastrointestinal tract or GI tract. The disease most commonly targets the ileum which is a part in the small intestine. The digestive tract is organs that connect your mouth to your anus and it releases hormones and enzymes for the digestion in food. The inflammation caused by the disease goes deep into the lining of the digestive tract. It creates a stricture in the small intestine which is a narrowing of the pathway that can slow the movement of food through the intestine. The stricture can then move to large intestine which can cause many problems for absorption. When the disease causes the intestine to swell it can also be very problematic because the large intestine wouldn’t be able to function properly. Crohn’s disease is considered as an inflammatory bowel disease.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic condition with significant relapses and remissions and an increased mortality. A Norwegian study has shown that after 10 year the colectomy rate was 9.8%.19 The IBSEN study showed that 83% of people initially had reoccurring disease. Although 50% were shown to be symptomless after five years.19 This study also demonstrated that 20% of people with proctitis or left-sided colitis progressed to extensive colitis.19
Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease is tricky. There is currently no cure for Crohn’s Disease (and technically no legitimate cure for Ulcerative Colitis). Also, there is no sure-fire way of treating the disease, as there is no one medicine that works for everyone. Treatments for Crohn’s disease also differ from the treatments of Ulcerative Colitis.
Hemochromatosis is a disease which makes your body absorb all of the iron in food, instead of regulating iron intake. Hemochromatosis “attacks” the entire body, especially the places where most of the iron normally goes: the bloodstream and liver. Some symptoms of this disease are bone and joint discomfort, liver problems, irregular heartbeat, and an unusual bronzing of the skin. Armand Trousseau first described it in 1865 as Diabetes bronze, due to people with diabetes showing the bronze-skin symptom. It was thought to be quite rare at the time. About “⅓ or ¼ of people of Western European descent have th...
A working diagnosis of coeliac disease has been made for patient MJ, in this report I will explain and analyse the patient’s immune responses and attempt to suggest several treatments. Coeliac disease is usually triggered by the ingestion of gluten which contains the peptide gliadin found in wheat, alternatively other peptides in the prolamin family are able to elicit an immune response in CD sufferers (C. Gianfrani, 2005). The gliadin antigen works by enlarging tight junctions, allowing larger proteins to permeate through the membrane (Lammers, K.M., 2008), thus inducing an immune response and leading to small intestine enteropathy (C. Gianfrani, 2005). CD is a relatively common disease, it’s estimated that 1% of the population in the US and in Europe suffer from the condition (Catassi, C., et al., 2001). It is a multifactorial disease hence depending upon several aspects such as environmental and genetic input (Sollid, L.M., 2000).
Ulcerative colitis, or UC, is a chronic gastrointestinal disease that causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the large intestine. It causes ulcers in the colon and rectum. Ulcerative colitis is one of two forms of inflammatory bowel disease. In UC, the inflammation from the ulcers breaks down the lining of the colon and causes bleeding and discomfort in the abdomen.
The pancreas is one of the essential organs in the human body and belongs in the Digestive system. Out of all the internal organs, the pancreas is unique because the pancreas plays a role in both the endocrine gland and the exocrine gland. This means that the pancreas is a dual function gland in which is the reason why the pancreas is such a vital part of the digestive system. This research paper will talk about the anatomy, physiology, and the important functions the pancreas play to maintain homeostasis.
Inflammatory bowel disease is a life long disease, and it particularly targets the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract), which consists of the mouth, esophagus, stomach small intestine, large intestine (appendix, cecum, colon (ascending, transverse, descending, and sigmoid), and rectum), and anus. The gastrointestinal tract is very important to the human body; some of its functions include mechanical and chemical digestion of food, the movement of food and waste from mouth to anus, secretion of enzymes and mucus, and the absorption of nutrients. These are some reason why it’s so destructive when this part of the body becomes impaired or even damaged.
