The definition of a relationship has changed so many times in the past decades. It has gone from a connection between two people to an obsession and almost a competition. In today’s world a relationship consists of major intimacy and closeness. There are some who believe that intimacy while dating is wrong. They form their own definition of a relationship into what they call a “godly relationship”. Those supporting that kind of a relationship condemn sexual closeness and monitor who their young people are allowed to date. There are two worlds of dating in our lives today; one with infatuation and the other with togetherness.
A relationship can be defined in so many different ways. People often form their own definitions and follow the rules that they make up. Some (Christians for example) call that dangerous and follow a strict set of rules for dating from a book (such as the bible). The general characteristics of a relationship usually include caring deeply about someone, and showing how you care about them in different ways. Looking at two different types we can see exactly how different they are. One type is “worldly” relationship of people in the general world and how they go about dating while the other is a “godly” relationship of a specific group of people who follow punctilious rules of dating.
Worldly dating can be defined as a method of introduction and carrying out of a pre-marital relationship between a single man and a single woman:…that begins with either the man or the woman initiating with the other…that is conducted outside the formal oversight or authority of either person’s family or church…that may or may not have marriage as its goal and is often purely recreational or educational. ...gment on whether or not their child is ready for dating. The parents need to be able to have confidence that their child will make right, proper, and wise decisions while dating (Bruinsma).
The two types of dating are very different in many ways. The worldly way is enjoyable, but can cause many consequences while the godly way has more restrictions, but can lead to a happier and more successful love life. Therefore, it is the reader that must decide for him or herself what is better. Dating is a serious matter either way. In general we must make sure we have healthy relationships. Having a healthy relationship includes maintaining good communication, resolving conflicts in an orderly and friendly way, but also getting past the hurt of past relationships (Robinson). Following a healthy relationship can lead to memories of happiness with the one you are in love with.
Belongingness is an emotion that everyone longs to feel throughout the course of their lives. Starting in adolescence, we as humans are naturally attracted to others in a romantic way. Girls in junior high start wearing make-up and dressing nice in order to impress the boys and get their attention. During this time, both girls and boys want a boyfriend or girlfriend, and are interested in this idea of “dating.” As boys and girls progress into high school, dating becomes even more of the thing to do. As a young teenager, I wanted to date, but my parents were against it. Many parents have a negative outlook about dating because of the consequences it may lead to, mainly sexual activity. Some believe that dating has changed drastically for the worse, but Beth Bailey believes differently. In Bailey’s article entitled “From Front Porch to Backseat: A History of the Date,” she analyzes the history of dating and how numerous people have not conceptualized this idea correctly. By showing authority, evidence, and values, Bailey presents an effective argument about the history of dating.
Indian dating was orderly and the documentary Meet the Patels featured many successful couples that were happy after following the Indian dating culture. For Ravi’s parents, they had exactly 10 minutes of talking before it was decided that they were going to be married and have a future together. It’s mind blowing that it worked that well for them, but I believe that in America and in today’s pop culture - Ten minutes with a person won’t cut it. There are too many secrets and too much about a person that’s left to
What does it mean to have a relationship? You could be together, pertaining to the select other who you entrust with all your emotions and your heart. You could be related, like a brother, sister, mother, daughter, etcetera; a relative. Heck, you could pertain this vast meaning of a relationship, with the ocean itself. As the ocean is large and it inumerous to fathom, so is the definition of relationship, which can be portrayed as various meanings.
Dating back to the early 1900’s and all the way through to the present, romantic relationships have been viewed differently. From strict unwritten dating regulations to not having regulations at all, recent generations have become more liberated in making their own decisions. The progressing times have made us become a more accepting society and have caused a decrease in the strong practice of religion and class. Even though differences such as religion and class in relationships were more than an issue they were not always a complete deterrence.
Dating is definitely an "American phenomenon." Few other countries carry on this practice with as much fervor as Americans do. Then again, few other countries have the same social conditions as America. Since the turn of the century, there has been a greater freedom between men and women, for example, both attend the same schools with the same classes. Both sexes become accustomed to the other at early ages which is very conducive to the practice of dating (Merrill 61).
In closing, while Ferrer has presented a well thought-out article that has achieved its goal, at least in my case, of opening the reader’s mind to other relationship styles, he does overlook a few areas. Our society is always changing and along with that the way we form relationships. Divorce and inter-racial marriage has become fairly common-place and acceptable, while same-sex marriages are slowly working toward that goal. This shows that people prefer to do what they feel is best for them, and makes them happy, rather then what societal pressures makes them feel they should do. By doing what makes us happy, and what we feel is right, we slowly change societal opinion. You can not please everyone, so you may as well please those that are important to you, as long as you do not harm to others.
A relationship is an emotional connection to someone involving an interaction between two or more people. There are many types of relationships, some functional and others far from being workable. I will demonstrate this through my texts of; Little Fugue, and Morning Song both poems written by Sylvia Plath; the movie, Love Actually; and the book, Trickster’s Choice by Tamora Pierce.
For centuries now, we have been taught by society that being monogamous is the socially accepted norm. In fact, having more than one marital or sexual partner in many cultures is considered to be taboo. Yet that leaves many people wondering how that tradition was even constructed and whether or not we should continue to live in a monogamous manner. In this paper, we are going to examine if being monogamous is truly a part of human nature and whether or not we are meant to be with only one marital or sexual partner throughout the course of our lives. Now more so than ever, society is moving in a direction that challenges traditional ways of life and many people are no longer following this socially constructed norm. In fact, monogamy has become a very popular, controversial topic that is continuously being addressed by the media and it has people second-guessing if remaining monogamous fits their ideal lifestyle. This is an especially important topic for our generation, due to the fact that we are currently at the stage in our lives where we set goals for ourselves that will pave the roads of our futures. Deciding whether or not to be monogamous is just as important as picking career paths and it holds just as much significance in the way it affects the rest of our lives. This is a problem in relational communication because whether we decide to be monogamous or non-monogamous, our decision will ultimately affect the way we interact with others and the way we approach intimate relationships. With today’s society slowly moving against monogamy, it’s time to decide if limiting ourselves to one marital and sexual partner is really in our nature, or if it’s just a tradition of the past that no longer holds the social significance that ...
According to the article “Tinder and the Dawn of the “Dating Apocalypse,’” “People used to meet their partners through proximity, through family and friends, but now Internet meeting is surpassing every other form” (Sales). Jo Sales’ point is that the Internet is overtaking other ways of meeting a partner. In the past, the way of finding one’s potential partner was through family members, but now society is moving in the direction of using the Internet as a way to find their partners. Students in college provided a great amount of information regarding hookup culture, which supported Jo Sales arguments. According to Martin Monto and Anna Carey, “Current research and the popular media have claimed that the hookup culture is a widespread phenomenon that has replaced traditional dating...” (Monto and Carey 606). In making this comment, traditional relationships that were once said to be loving and caring have moved to sexual activity called hookups. Research shows how hookup culture has overtaken the roots of traditional dating and will continue to expand in the future. The study shows how college students were involved in one-night stands frequently knowing that they do not want to build a long lasting relationship. Traditional dating in the past formed stable relationships, and the idea of hookup culture was not even a topic of discussion. Questions
Hands are sweaty, heart is racing, and the feeling of light-headedness is present: these are all symptoms of the classic first date. The average human typically dreads first dates. There are many different first dates someone will go on, however. First, there is the Job Interview; this date is where the person on the date is pounded with questions. Next, there is the Over the Top, Time to Bop; this usually results in the person returning home slightly creeped out. There is also the Fairytale, which leaves the person feeling as though they are living in a romance movie. Lastly, there is the Talk or Walk; this date, no matter how fun the activity of the date is, is just silence. As any person in the dating realm can see, first dates

We live our lives waiting for who we think is the perfect person, but in reality that never happens. When we hear the word relationship, we think of a man and a woman. Being in a relationship is more than just being intimate. There are different kinds of relationship such as husbands and wives, parent and child, or just friend to friend. Some people say it takes two people to make a relationship fail. When two people meet, they usually know from the begining if they want to be with that person or if they want to pursue a relationship.
I asked Coco Chanel what her definition of traditional dating was and she said, “Doing things old fashioned.” Coco Chanel further explained that traditional dating is keeping things simple. Doing things with someone you see yourself with for a long time possibility getting married to them. “Traditional dating is something basic and innocent that doesn’t need to have sex involved because intimacy is grown through trust and love.” Coco Chanel said this generation is going to have a hard time with traditional dating because no one values sex anymore because it’s something you can get whenever you
Throughout most of my life I have gained friendships and relationships with others that have turned into long term, but others which only lasted a short while. The friendship that has greatly impacted my life significantly over the last eight years is someone who means so much to me. This meaningful friendship all started back when I was in middle school, which has grown stronger over the years. I met Brooke in middle school because we had some of the same classes and were in homeroom together. Our friendship developed quickly and lasted throughout our high school years. We became really close our Junior and Senior year of high school. But, maintaining our friendship hasn’t always been so easy. Today, we text and call each other on our free time, but I know I can count and rely on her when I need someone to talk too. I call her my second sister and vice versa. And when we go home on breaks we see one another as much as we can. The best part of our relationship is that if one is in need of advice or in need of a shoulder to cry on, we are always there for one another. Keeping in contact is very important in our relationship and communication has played a key role in our relationship.
“Relationships are what make up our world today, they shape the ways we see things and the way that we do things, relationships affect how we see the world today”. I believe supporting what your partner does, having a great sum of trust and showing your affections towards your partner is what will make a healthy relationship great.
