Every clinical rotation comes with expectations for a nursing student, and it is important for the student to meet these expectations. The reason for this is because as the student advances through the program standards will only increase for this student. A performance appraisal involves a manager who gives assignments to staff, reviews the execution of assignments and gives feedback to his or her staff (Marquis& Huston, 2017). In a clinical setting, the clinical instructor is like the manager of the students and the students are like the staff. This is the area when the clinical instructor will evaluate the students’ ability to complete skills and use nursing judgment. During the evaluation of these skills, the clinical instructor will make a decision to pass or fail a student. For example, if a first-year student who is giving his or her first heparin injection asks “should I aspirate?” before giving the injection is acceptable for this student. Medication administration is a skill a student does not practice until their second semester, so this still a learning experience for this student. However, a last semester student asks the same question, this could lead to a negative outcome because this is not a new skill. The performance appraisal is an essential part of both students because the clinical instructor needs to evaluate the both students’ performances and make a decision if this is acceptable behavior or not. The first-year nursing student will receive a needs improvement for the skill of injections on that day’s evaluation. Based on this performance the clinical instructor may give the student a referral to practice during school
