Every clinical rotation comes with expectations for a nursing student, and it is important for the student to meet these expectations. The reason for this is because as the student advances through the program standards will only increase for this student. A performance appraisal involves a manager who gives assignments to staff, reviews the execution of assignments and gives feedback to his or her staff (Marquis& Huston, 2017). In a clinical setting, the clinical instructor is like the manager of the students and the students are like the staff. The assignments and expectations of performance are based on what semester the students are currently in. The clinical instructor will have an evaluation sheet for each student. The evaluation sheet for …show more content…
This is the area when the clinical instructor will evaluate the students’ ability to complete skills and use nursing judgment. During the evaluation of these skills, the clinical instructor will make a decision to pass or fail a student. For example, if a first-year student who is giving his or her first heparin injection asks “should I aspirate?” before giving the injection is acceptable for this student. Medication administration is a skill a student does not practice until their second semester, so this still a learning experience for this student. However, a last semester student asks the same question, this could lead to a negative outcome because this is not a new skill. The performance appraisal is an essential part of both students because the clinical instructor needs to evaluate the both students’ performances and make a decision if this is acceptable behavior or not. The first-year nursing student will receive a needs improvement for the skill of injections on that day’s evaluation. Based on this performance the clinical instructor may give the student a referral to practice during school
The role of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) in health care has been identified as a critical role in the goal to provide high-quality health care. APRNs have a bigger role to play in the health care system and it is important that students are provided with relevant and valuable knowledge as well as experience that improve their abilities. Achieving course objectives are critical for APRNs with the goal of contributing positively to the health care system. As a future APRN, I place high priority on life-long learning and the development of other people’s skill sets. All duties associated with health care require a dedication to excellence and selflessness. These are two components of learning that will improve the capabilities of
Not only does The Francis Report call for more compassionate care, but it also states that stronger leadership is required of all ward nurse managers. It also insists on a change with regards to the appraisal and support system for nurses. This appraisal system is a means of assessing the performance of nurses so that any shortcomings can be corrected through methods such as training and transfer. On the other hand, a positive assessment is to be rewarded by promotion.

Senior nursing students will complete a QSEN weekly clinical journal requirement learn how to self-assess their progress toward demonstrating these nationally-based competencies. The students will select a different competency each week to address and discuss how they applied that competency to patient care or how they hope to better achieve that competency as a graduate nurse. By the end of the clinical rotation each student will have had a chance to focus on each of the six QSEN competencies: patient centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety and informatics. The students’ reflection on their clinical experiences each week will teach them how to integrate the core competencies required before graduation. According to Use of self-evaluative practices puts the power back upon the student to direct and think critically about their learning (Dickensen, 2015). Demonstrating these competencies supports safety and excellence in clinical practice (QSEN,
It is important that students have the ability of being competent in a clinical setting. To be deemed competent in skills according to nursing regulations and requirements. This is a challenging factor for many students, as they enter transition period. This is due to students feel they do not have the desired clinical competency that promotes the skills and authorities of a registered nurse (Harsin, Soroor & Soodabeh, 2012). Clinical research studies have found that students do have the required expected levels of knowledge, attitude and behaviour’s. However, the range of practical skills aren’t sufficient for the range of practice settings (Evans, 2008). This research has also found that other evidenced based studies found that competency in nursing skills is still lacking (Evans, 2008). These skills are lacked by students and newly graduated nursing how are in the first or second year of
Whitehead (2011) discussed the expectations of the ward managers to integrating quickly into the ward routines along with the added responsibilities and accountability were seen as too overwhelming by the graduate nurses. She argued that although the theoretical component of the education was adequate, there were inconsistencies in the practical aspects, especially around the skills of time management, decision making, and drug administration. She said it varied greatly depending on the type of clinical placements undertaken by the students, as each clinical placements offered different skills and hence, varied individual experiences and
Drug administration forms a major part of the clinical nurse’s role. Medicines are prescribed by the doctor and dispensed by the pharmacist but responsibility for correct administration rests with the registered nurse (O'Shea 1999). So as a student nurse this has become my duty and something that I need to practice and become competent in carrying it out. Each registered nurse is accountable for his/her practice. This practice includes preparing, checking and administering medications, updating knowledge of medications, monitoring the effectiveness of treatment, reporting adverse drug reactions and teaching patients about the drugs that they receive (NMC 2008). Accountability also goes for students, if at any point I felt I was not competent enough to dispensing a certain drug it would be my responsibility in speaking up and let the registered nurses know, so that I could shadow them and have the opportunity to learn help me in future practice and administration.
Student nurses depend on the knowledge proficiency of the nurse to be able to consolidate and apply knowledge in a real life setting. Such roles of the nurse mandates him/her to have a good scientific basis for his/her practice.
For the outcome, Clinical Competence I have learned the importance of the nursing process in my current class, Skills and Concepts. This information is relatively new to me, so I know I have plenty of room to grow in this area. I have learned how to utilize the resources that I am provided. One resource in particular is my pocket guide. This has been a useful tool in helping learn and write a nursing diagnosis based upon a given situation. As I progress through the rest of this class; I hope by the end to be more competent in ways of providing the best possible care while utilizing the nursing process.
Clinical placements allow student nurses to put theory into practice with real patients and actual clinical situations. Every placement will challenge student, improve communication skills, build own knowledge and foster own reflective practice. It is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of training to be a nurse. I personally believe that, students must be responsible for their own learning opportunities and understand the outcomes they need to achieve on placement, discussing any queries with their clinical supervisor. I always look for learning opportunities. I approach my clinical supervisor for her guidance to perform any new skills fall into my scope of practice.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
My clinical rotation in the acute care hospital has definitely been a great learning experience, it was a big transition for me having been working in a long-term care facilities for six years. There were three positive aspects about my performance that I will take away from this learning experience.
In this case the printed questionnaire will be given to every patient enrolled in the study prior to an education intervention. The questionnaire will be sent to the patient three days post discharge from the hospital. Since this tool can differentiate high or low knowledge, data will be entered electronically according to responses. Additionally, demographic material such as age, gender, primary and secondary diagnosis will be attached to each questionnaire. The demographic material and questionnaire will be coded for ease of data entry.
In nursing, a refined conception of the meaning of a patient’s performance will enhance nursing judgements and nursing
Clinical evaluation is a tool that allows for the facilitation of learning by giving the student feedback on performance of their abilities as future nurses. Although, clinical evaluation is a tool that instructors use to gage performance, students can gage their own performance by using
