Every clinical rotation comes with expectations for a nursing student, and it is important for the student to meet these expectations. The reason for this is because as the student advances through the program standards will only increase for this student. This is the area when the clinical instructor will evaluate the students’ ability to complete skills and use nursing judgment. During the evaluation of these skills, the clinical instructor will make a decision to pass or fail a student. For example, if a first-year student who is giving his or her first heparin injection asks “should I aspirate?” before giving the injection is acceptable for this student. Medication administration is a skill a student does not practice until their second semester, so this still a learning experience for this student. However, a last semester student asks the same question, this could lead to a negative outcome because this is not a new skill.
