These days most employers are trying to hire an employee who can step up to be a team player in the workplace and be utilized to possibly cover in more than one permanent position for their company. There are several characteristics that should be instilled in an individual that could make them a valuable employee and team player. Let us take a look at some of those characteristics now. First and foremost to be a great team player the employee must be reliable. This means arriving on time, ready to start the work day in a productive state of mind, following all company rules and work practices because it is imperative that the employee truly have good work ethics. Knowing that their employer can depend on them is something that drives the desire within the employee to be a team player. Most team players also want their co-workers to have that desire as well. In order to try to stimulate these same characteristics in the their co-worker, the team player will use good communication skills to relay positive feedback, state ideas or define work directions in an easy to understand manner. In addition to being a good communicator, a team player must also be a good listener, and accept constructive criticism with an …show more content…
The team player will also offer to help co-workers out when they may be behind, or just need an extra pair of hands if they are in a bind. It takes this type of mindset to keep the ball rolling so to speak. For example, what good would a manufacturing facility be if only one area flowed well and the rest of the plant was backed up? There would be a lot of downtime and loss of production of the final product. Knowing the entire operation and having the flexibility to step into another role may be what keeps things moving
For instance, if Stacy was not performing well she would have to be told by another player to change something up to fix what she is doing wrong this will help with team innovation because Stacy will not be the only one told that she needs to fix something. Going off research about the team halo effect, we live in an individualistic society so the team halo effect plays a huge role in how teams measure success and failure. This makes it easier to explain why Marist has lost three years in a row to Wagner. Studies have shown that in a more collectivist society the team halo effect decreases or disappears. For the whole team to be blamed for the failure, there needed to be a team effort instead of having it be an individualistic game. If the team were playing together there would not be a single person to blame for it and the whole team would take the responsibility of the loss. Having the team play together as a collective unit will also increase the teams chases of winning. A way to incorporate the team is to inform the team on how the halo effect works hoping that after explaining it they would rather play as a unit and accept the failure together instead of blaming it on a
Athletes that play football at the college level serves the same purpose National Football League (NFL) athletes serve. At least, that is what many people think in the world we live in today. College football players play the game of football, are shown on television, and are looked up to by young people just like professional football players. The only difference between the two is NFL players get paid and college players do not. This is what leave football fans with an interesting question. Should college football players get paid like NFL players? This is the question many people want to know the answer to. Although college football players do share characteristics with professional football players, they should not be paid any money. The
The competencies of the team is about the team ability to respond and solve problems, ability to communicate, solve problem or manage conflicts, and ability to make decisions. It is important for the team to create an environment that allows its members to articulate their goals. It is important that team members ensure and understand how their work contributes towards team goals. Also team member should make effective necessary decisions; communicate with other team members; give and receive necessary feedback; form trust; and resolve conflicts or disagreements.
Another attribute of a team player is how he/she contributes to the team. A team player will discuss his/her ideas, give extra time, and sometimes give money, if it wills the team as a whole. By discussing ideas, a team player is using participative leadership. This gives the team as a whole the chance to solve problems together and work towards a solution. It will make every member of the team ...
In a team-oriented setting, everyone contributes to how well the group succeeds overall. You work with fellow members of the group to complete the work that needs to be done. Having the right people in the correct roles is an important factor in measuring the success of a team, where you are united with the other members to complete the main goals. Every group is made up of definite strengths and weaknesses. Our team's 3-5 major strengths necessary to work accordingly consist of Informer, Summarizer, Orienter, Piggy-Backer, and Encourager. One of our strengths as a team is that we get input from everyone involved. Every member of our team is a leader in some way. Part of being a good leader is knowing how important it is to receive the best ideas from each member of their team. We attend group meetings where we discuss any challenges, issues, and problems. At these meetings, we often exchange ideas or brainstorm new ones with each other and come up with the best and most creative team solutions as potential answers to those perceived problems.
The components of a good team should be considered. First, a high-performance team must have strong core values to guide attitudes and behavior consistent with the team's purpose. The members should know why the team is created and why he or she is on the team. Secondly, a team should have specific performance objectives. Members should know exactly what they are trying to accomplish. This also includes having standards for measuring results and ways of obtaining performance feedback. A good team will make members realize the importance of collective efforts. Third, a high-performance team has the right mix of skills. These involve technical, interpersonal, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. No one needs to know how to do it all, but each member should be able to contribute to the group....
Teams are a major source of companies in these coming years. Teams are Heroes (Collins, 2009-08-27). Everyone wants to be a hero, therefore we need to build, follow, and be effective team members and effective team leaders.
Skills and knowledge possessed by every member is also important for a team to become high performance. Although it is among the most important factors, however, it must be coupled with a good working relationship with every team member and good collaboration with every team member. The members who possess the good skills and wide knowledge will be a useful resource to the team if that team member can share their strengths with the other team members and vice versa. It is usually misconstrued that having skillful and intelligent team members is already enough to make a team work right. This kind of thinking is the reason why most teams, despite all of those competent members they have, fail to achieve their goals. A team should establish one common goal, not to think that way and develop a good working relationship with each member. (retrieved from: http://www.strictlysuccess.com, August 18, 2005) This can be done by self awareness exercises, like the DISC assessment and other assessments or any other kind of self awareness exercises regarding communication style differences. Then these factors and important pieces of information should be taken into full consideration before the actual project is begun. These exercise or assessments can be great ice breakers and mark the difference between a group of individuals merely assigned to a team, as opposed to functioning as...
Teamwork: Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain effective relationships both internally and externally. Willing to cooperate and be flexible when working with co-workers and management to complete a job, while always treating them with dignity and respect. Each member is comfortable in finding their place and can feel a sense of belonging within the team. As a team member, I portrayed the roles of a team player and a researcher. I may not be the brain of the group, but I was very eager to help and became a reliable member that follows-through on tasks to resolve conflicts. Also, I became a researcher too, at some point. I formulated various questions and gathered the information and data from the group. According to Sussex (2013), a researcher “is always asking a question and then finding their own answers.” She also stated in her blog that a team player is someone that the team could rely on because they are eager to help and resolve a conflict in a very calm way. I based my personality as a team member according to her seven types of a well-rounded team member in her blog. Each team member has different tasks to do. In our team, we focused on what the content should be and briefly discussed about the structure of the mind map. My biggest contribution would be completing my task, being creative and being able to contribute purposeful ideas to the team. Through teamwork, I learned to develop my strong points and found a way around to my
It is unquestionable that lessons of teamwork are learned through involvement with sports. Sports are all about working as a team to reach a common goal- winning games, meets, or matches. As most athletes know, this goal is not possible without becoming one joined team rather than a bunch of individuals. According the newspaper, Courier Mail, “It teaches you to always treat others with respect and not to get too cocky about your own abilities” (Sport a Teacher on the Playing Field of Life). If athletes play the game just to benefit themselves and their personal future, it is impossible to improve as a team overall and achieve success as a whole. Along with treating teammates with respect, it is equally important to be honest with not only fellow teammates but with oneself. Quarterback Kemp also said, “I learned that if...
Many times people forget that teamwork is a combination of the words TEAM and WORK. Which means it takes more than a combined group of people or a team, but it takes that and actions. Positivity, effective skills and effort from each group member. A good team member does their share of work in the group. equity and fairness are key in being a good team member also. A few other characteristics that help a group be successful are , positivity, complimenting other members, communication skills and fairness. By fairness I mean allowing everyone the chance to do something. This group project taught me the ability to be a team player. This is a skill needed to be successful in a group. I feel like it benefit me and my group members because normally
