Why do we really need to learn about you every single day for almost a whole hour? Math is important but not to the point where we need to learn how to find the square root of 625 and then subtract X to get how many apples are in a barrel. We will probably never use you in our lives. You have been in my life ever I’ve been in kindergarten. Every time I learn about you my teachers are horrible. For some reason, I believe math teachers are cursed with some poisonous potion that makes them cruel and horrifying. When I was in third grade, my first day of school was awesome. We all got to know each other and we spent the day drawing and writing about our summer. I thought my teacher was nice until we started to get working. A week past by and we started to do some math. If you ask anyone in my class on their opinion if we will have to use you in our everyday life they will no. I totally agree with them. From two studies in mathematics, a total of four relationships between teachers' content knowledge and student learning were examined. In three instances, a positive relationship was found, for two cohorts of elementary grades students over a three year period and for grade 3 students' learning of advanced concepts. In one instance, grade 3 students learning of basic concepts, no relationship was found. In science, a total of three relationships between teacher content knowledge and student learning were examined. In two instances, a relationship was documented between teachers' content knowledge, both correct and incorrect, and their grade 8 students' development of correct and incorrect understandings, respectively. High school freshmen rarely, if ever, think about the future and what it takes to make a successful future. I, as a freshman, also never thought about what college I wanted to go to or what credits I needed to graduate. I really didn’t think the grades I earned in my first year of high school would follow me to my last day of college, or even beyond that into my next job. In all actuality, from your first paper you turn in during your first couple weeks of school, to your final graduation project your final year of college, grades matter.
I also learned that mathematics was more than merely an intellectual activity: it was a necessary tool for getting a grip on all sorts of problems in science and engineering. Without mathematics there is no progress. However, mathematics could also show its nasty face during periods in which problems that seemed so simple at first sight refused to be solved for a long time. Every math student will recognize these periods of frustration and helplessness.
The foundation of learning was never built from that point on the next levels of math became difficult since we we never taught the principles. Every substitute teacher that came in our school trying to build a bridge failed because they were only, “‘starting on one side of the shore with some bricks and pieces of steel’” (Whitaker par.6). Math wasn’t the only subject I experienced with having many substitutes throughout a course. The other subjects where I experienced a low quality education included science, pre- calculus, and world history.
As teachers we plan our lessons and think to ourselves, "my students are going to love this lesson and will be able to understand what I am teaching", but sometimes that isn 't the case. You may plan a lesson in hopes that your students understand but it doesn 't go as planned. Every student learns differently and thinks differently and because of this we, as teachers must learn to differentiate our lessons. This may require us to change the way we deliver our lesson, change the activities for our lessons or even change the wording of our material so students understand. Math includes numbers, letters, and equations, but it is also so much more than that—math is a way of thinking, a method of solving problems and explaining arguments, a foundation upon which modern society is built, a structure that nature is patterned by…and math is everywhere.
As a secondary subject, society often views mathematics a critical subject for students to learn in order to be successful. Often times, mathematics serves as a gatekeeper for higher learning and certain specific careers. Since the times of Plato, “mathematics was virtually the first thing everyone has to learn…common to all arts, science, and forms of thought” (Stinson, 2004). Plato argued that all students should learn arithmetic; the advanced mathematics was reserved for those that would serve as the “philosopher guardians” of the city (Stinson, 2004). By the 1900s in the United States, mathematics found itself as a cornerstone of curriculum for students. National reports throughout the 20th Century solidified the importance of mathematics in the success of our nation and its students (Stinson, 2004). As a mathematics teacher, my role to educate all students in mathematics is an important one. My personal philosophy of mathematics education – including the optimal learning environment and best practices teaching strategies – motivates my teaching strategies in my personal classroom.
The prominence of numeracy is extremely evident in daily life and as teachers it is important to provide quality assistance to students with regards to the development of a child's numeracy skills. High-level numeracy ability does not exclusively signify an extensive view of complex mathematics, its meaning refers to using constructive mathematical ideas to “...make sense of the world.” (NSW Government, 2011). A student who only presents an extremely basic understanding of numeracy, such as small number counting and limited spatial and time awareness, is at risk of falling behind in the increasingly competitive and technologically focused job market of the 21st Century (Huetinck & Munshin, 2008). It seems like only yesterday--I was a high school student majoring in English with plans someday to become, of all things, a teacher. I attended a small high school--there were only 140 students in my graduating class--so we were blessed with the same teacher for several consecutive years. It was not until I found myself in college a few years later that I learned how truly blessed I had been in math. Mr. John Ramon of County High School was a great math teacher.
