Many immigrants come to the US looking for the American dream, and with that dream give their children a better life. I 'm a first generation immigrant that came from a small south American country named Ecuador. With the almost six years of being in this country I have learned many aspects of American culture, and even embraced some as my own. This particular event in my life is strongly related to sociological concepts as immigration, race, ethnicity, and assimilation. Thousands of people leave their country of origin and come to America each year looking for a better life, not only for them but also for their family. That displacement of people is immigration, which is defined as a movement of people to a different country. An example of …show more content…
Assimilation can be defined as the process in which a person’s culture resembles the culture of the majority. This is true for many first generation immigrants that are exposed to American culture for the first time. For example I came to this country when I already had identified with another culture, which made the transition between countries much more difficult than someone who was born here. Coming to the United States I had to learn the language and many of the cultural norms that are expected from me even though I was not part of the culture from the beginning. After many years of being here I have adopted many of the cultural values Americans possess, and even changed some of my personality to match with my new found culture. Although I was not against the assimilation of the American culture as my own I still have some of my culture’s values such as the strong value on family ties, and the enjoyment of the spicy rhythm salsa music offers. This is something different that many children of immigrants don 't have as they completely neglect their parents’ culture and adopt the American culture as their only
Assimilation has been a successful process that has easily helped civilize many people. The Native Americans and the wolf girls are perfect examples of this, and have been able to become part of a new culture through assimilation. However, there is evidence that the process was a difficult one since there is a in both cases extreme cultural gap tween student and teacher that caused them difficulty in the forced assimilation. The assimilation itself done at an uncomfortable distance away from home causing students to feel homesick. The complete destruction of the old cultural ties does little to improve this. The difficulty in the process of assimilation was mainly caused by how the Indian students and the wolf girls were viewed as uncivilized,
Many people in America want to assimilate to the U.S. because they think that being American is a better option. People such as the Italians in the 1870s tried to assimilate in order to become an American to not become an enemy in the U.S. Also, the Mexicans today are constantly coming to the U.S. to have a better life because they know being American is the best solution for their problems at home. What assimilation mean is when a person leaves one’s own culture to join a different culture the person wants to be. For the purpose of this essay, an American is a person who has commitment to succeed in what one wants, able to speak english, to love the pop culture in the U.S. at the time one is living such as the hit songs, games, T.V. shows, etc. but not to other cultures, and be a citizen in America. People throughout history must assimilate to become a true American
Since the creation of the United States of America, the country has been a place that attracts immigrants from all around the world. As a result, The United States became a culturally and ethnically diverse country. This is due to the large-scale migration from many culturally, racially, and ethnically different countries throughout the history of the United States. The recent generations of culturally diverse immigrants see themselves assimilating to the American culture differently than the immigrants who came to the US two or three hundred years ago. The effect of assimilation caused some people to embrace the American identity, and detach from their original cultures. Assimilation caused some
Immigration has been a topic that has caused multiple discussions on why people migrate from one country to another, also how it affects both the migraters and the lands they go. Immigration is the movement from one location to another to live there permanently. This topic has been usually been associated with sociology to better explain how it affects people, cultures and societies. Sociology has three forms of thinking that are used to describe and analyze this topic. There are three forms of thinking that are used to tell and describe immigration to society; structural functionalist, symbolic interactionist, and conflict theory. Each of these theories uses different forms of thinking and rationality to describe and explain socio topics.
Assimilation is a gradual process by which a person or group belonging to one culture adopts the practices of another, thereby becoming a member of that culture. Sociologists commonly distinguish between forced and unforced assimilation. In forced assimilation, a person or group is compelled to take on the practices of another culture, such as by adopting that culture's language and religious traditions. In unforced assimilation, a person takes on the practices of another culture but is not forcibly compelled to do so. Sociologists use the concept of assimilation to describe one way a person or group of a particular culture (such as immigrants) might respond to or blend with another culture, or how a minority cultural group might relate to a dominant cultural
Assimilation is the way of understanding social life style throughout adopting the culture. During the history immigration has become very important part of our country. Regardless of that who we are, we are dealing with immigrants in our daily life. Also, our nation gets lot of benefits from immigration. Immigrants are bringing new ideas and views with themselves. So, immigration is very important, but it is not bringing only positive income also creates challenges for national and social security. Assimilation: I feel that through cultural assimilation, I have lost some aspects to the Vietnamese traditional culture. By adapting to the Canadian culture, I have noticed myself and other people replacing most Vietnamese words for English. I tend to speak half and half in a sentence, and this has affected my identity as it makes me question how I will be able to preserve the Vietnamese culture in the future. I have adopted more to the Canadian language that as I grow up, I have become rusty and lost the ability to communicate in Vietnamese. One of the most known sauces to the Asian culture is fish sauce, or in Vietnamese it’s known as nước mắm. I believe that today, one of the controversial issues is how to find a fine line between whether to meet society’s needs or individual’s needs. Social acceptance is a dilemma and I think that because of cultural assimilation it has affected my identity. As a kid, I was very cautious of what food I bring to school because every
Who is an immigrant? An immigrant is a person who has a citizenship in one country but enters another country to set up as a permanent resident. Sometimes countries are suffering greatly from lack of leadership, internal strife or war, and a collapsed economy. This is the case in Somalia, as well as in Syria, Libya, and Yemen. Syrian people are moving to Europe in order to find a peaceful home. Mexican immigrants come to the US looking for jobs. The people then move to new countries where they don’t speak the national language. In America, when the immigrants come, there are many difficulties: cultural differences regarding time and scheduling, transportation issues, and language difficulties.
According to Crapo, assimilation is "When members of one society become a politically or economically subordinated part of another, as when a conquered group is incorporated into the conquering society or when an ethnic population immigrates into a country with a different culture, the subordinate group may lose its original culture as its members adopt the customs of the larger society, a process called assimilation.” Furthermore, Crapo attributes this process as a “result of the choices of individual members of the assimilating group to enter the lifestyle of the dominant society, but it can also be a coercive process”
Assimilating can be both negative and positive. A positive aspect of assimilation is that you are trying to fit in and become a part of American culture. You become accustomed to new traditions, values, and morals. However, there is a part of you that does not let go of where you came from. Regardless of what culture you come from you will also hold on to those traditions and incorporate it as part of your new traditions. Assimilation can also be negative in the sense that you may be looked down upon taking part in new American traditions. Your family or culture might view you as “too American”. They might look down upon you for forgetting were you came from and not embracing your culture. Depending on the situation and who you are talking
Working at an orphanage in Ghana may have not been the benevolent experience I expected, but it ended up being a portal into the deaf community. I sat on my high horse as I entered the orphanage. As much as this trip was geared to help others, human nature’s sense of narcissism kicked in, and a small voice suffocated my brain saying , “I hope this makes me seem like a good person.” My lack of global awareness was astonishing when I arrived in Ghana, little did I know, a five minute interaction with a deaf Ghanaian man would alter my mindset completely.
An immigrant is a person from one country who moves to another country permanently for a better life. There are many different reasons why people country to go to another country. People move to escape war, to escape famine or other natural disasters, to find greater freedom, to find work and to reunite with family. In my case, my family left their war torn country of Somalia and seek refuge in Kenya. After moving to Kenya my parents had my brother and me. Two months after my birth, my father moved from Kenya to Boston, MA to reunite with his family and find a job. Leaving my mother, brother and I live off the money my family oversees sends us.

According to Morrissey et al (1991) written in Burnet (1998), assimilation is the achievement of invisibility by the immigrants’ through their attainment of normal Australian practices. According to Wagley and Harris written in Berndt (1964), assimilation means that a minority group loses its identity as a discreet group and merges with the dominant group. In this case, immigrants become more like local people by adopting the values, norms, foods, and culture from host countries.
In this essay, I shall critically examine if it is the responsibility of ethnic minorities to assimilate into the Hong Kong society and give up their own cultural to be real Hong Kong people. First, I would define what is “assimilation” and different forms of integration. How different forms of integrations are being used internationally. Secondly, I would share my views in favor of assimilation and against assimilation. Thirdly, I would state my position as a social worker that ethnic minorities should not assimilate into local cultural because as a human everyone has the right of freedom to choose their religion, taste and type of food, clothing style etc. Lastly, how I would work and contribute to the situation as a social worker.
