An immigrant is a person from one country who moves to another country permanently for a better life. There are many different reasons why people country to go to another country. People move to escape war, to escape famine or other natural disasters, to find greater freedom, to find work and to reunite with family. In my case, my family left their war torn country of Somalia and seek refuge in Kenya. After moving to Kenya my parents had my brother and me. Two months after my birth, my father moved from Kenya to Boston, MA to reunite with his family and find a job. Leaving my mother, brother and I live off the money my family oversees sends us.
It was really difficult living in Kenya because the government was not very welcoming to Somali refugees. I remember my family always had to hide from the Kenyan police at night because they were scared that they would get sent to jail or deported back to Somalia. My mother decided that it would be best for my brother and I to move from Kenya to Uganda. My family was finally granted a visa to move to the United States and reunite with my father. When my mother broke the news I didn’t understand what was going on. I was told that we were going to move to the United States and live with my dad. It was a bitter-sweet moment because I was moving to the new country with more opportunity, but I was going to leave my family and friends behind. When we finally landed I finally saw my dad for the first time since he left. It was so weird seeing him because I don’t remember his face and only recognize his voice.
