An immigrant is a person from one country who moves to another country permanently for a better life. There are many different reasons why people country to go to another country. People move to escape war, to escape famine or other natural disasters, to find greater freedom, to find work and to reunite with family. In my case, my family left their war torn country of Somalia and seek refuge in Kenya. After moving to Kenya my parents had my brother and me. Two months after my birth, my father moved from Kenya to Boston, MA to reunite with his family and find a job. Leaving my mother, brother and I live off the money my family oversees sends us.
It was really difficult living in Kenya because the government was not very welcoming to Somali refugees. I remember my family always had to hide from the Kenyan police at night because they were scared that they would get sent to jail or deported back to Somalia. My mother decided that it would be best for my brother and I to move from Kenya to Uganda. On our way there we were stopped and my mother was arrested by the Kenyan government for crossing the border illegally. Luckily my mother’s friend

bailed us out of jail. It was not fair for me and my brother to be put in jail because we were born in the country and we were only toddlers. When we got to Uganda my mother sent my brother and I to school. I was fortunate to go to school because many families in Uganda couldn’t afford it and girls were forbidden to go to school. I remember going to a Catholic preschool because that was the only kind of school that allowed girls and it was English base. Therefore, I had a hard time getting along with my class meets because I wasn’t fluent in English or Swahili and I didn’t practice Catholicism. Life in Africa was very difficult for my family and I, so we decided to make the difficult journey from Nairobi, Kenya to Boston, MA. On July 1, 2004, my mother got the call she has been waiting for since my father left.
My family was finally granted a visa to move to the United States and reunite with my father. When my mother broke the news I didn’t understand what was going on. I was told that we were going to move to the United States and live with my dad. It was a bitter-sweet moment because I was moving to the new country with more opportunity, but I was going to leave my family and friends behind. When we finally landed I finally saw my dad for the first time since he left. It was so weird seeing him because I don’t remember his face and only recognize his voice. I would always talk to my dad on the phone, so it was cool finally seeing who was at the end of the line face to face. My family and I traveled 7,182 miles to reunite with my
father. My new life was a big change especially during the winter because I never seen snow before. When I was living in Africa, the average temperature throughout the seasons was 71°F. Imagine moving from one of the hottest regions in the world, East Africa to one of the coldest, New England. The biggest problem from moving to a new country was the cultural difference because America was so different from the countries that I've visited before. In Brockton especially there were not a lot of people who was the same ethnicity or religion as me beside my family. In kindergarten I was so different that the Boston Globe interviewed me to show how diverse Brockton really was. In the interview, the reporter asked me about the struggles of being a new immigrant and the challenges I faced as a student. I explained to her that learning a new language was difficult at first but now ''English is fun”. In school I always had to push myself to the fullest potential. School was always a challenge for me growing up. For instance, most of the time I couldn’t ask my parents for help with my homework because of the language barrier. The first few years was a challenge for my family and I to adopt to the new change. The journey from Nairobi, Kenya to Brockton, MA was really difficult and frustrating. Being an immigrant shaped me into the person I am today because I had to overcome a lot of challenges to finally “fit” into society. I had to learn a new language, adapted to a new culture, and got use to the New England weather.

“Immigration is the term utilized to describe the action and process by which a citizen of one country relocates to another country after petitioning for residency into that country.” (Martinez). An immigrant, also known as an alien, is person or people who come from a foreign country. Aliens are broken down into two main categories: the legal aliens and the illegal aliens. But what are the differences between the two? Legal aliens owe allegiance to the country. In America, aliens have the opportunity of becoming legal by either having a green card or becoming an American citizen and having dual citizenship. Green cards holders are permanent residents who have been authorized to live and work in the U.S. legally but they are not American citizens. To become a citizen, you must be legal, know fluent English, have a clean record, and go th...
Months later, I woke up and walked down stairs to make my oats. I walked downstairs and was looking for my Father. I looked everywhere in the house before I noticed he was no-where to be found. Then I walked into the living room and saw my Mother. She was hysterical. Tears were running down her cheek like the Mississippi flowed into the Gulf of Mexico.
As of 2013, eleven million immigrants are living in the United States of America (Immigration); however, their reasons for coming to America vary. Abuse by the government, poverty, and drug crimes are all reasons illegal immigrants come to America. Illegal immigrants travel to America to achieve their dreams because in their native countries all these problems make it hard for them to achieve their dreams. Illegal immigrants want to be accepted here in the US so they can achieve their dreams just like Americans can achieve theirs. Immigrants who migrated over to the United States have spent years building a decent life here and deserve citizenship and most importantly, respect.
Among every other country in the world, the United States of America is where people feel the most comfortable place to come and live a better life. Immigrants are people who leave their counties to reside in other counties that are rich and safe to better themselves. Every year people immigrate to the USA for many reasons. Many people are having difficulty living in their native country such as over population, jobless which make the economy so hard. People from outside of the United States think there is peace, love, equality, free education, jobs, good food to stay healthy, but most importantly freedom of speech to express yourself in America. Today, I will only focus on some reasons why people in my country immigrates to America. This is
When it comes to immigration many things comes to a person mind. There are many things that an immigrant faces when he/she decides to migrate to another country. For instance, for an immigrant moving is not an easy thing to do they will have to leave everything behind and start over again in a whole different country than their own native country. At first is going to be hard because they do not know anyone, they do not speak the language. The parents will have to look for a house and also look for a job to support their family and learn how to survive in what seems like a different world. These are some of the problems that immigrants face when coming to the United States.
Who is an immigrant? An immigrant is a person who has a citizenship in one country but enters another country to set up as a permanent resident. Sometimes countries are suffering greatly from lack of leadership, internal strife or war, and a collapsed economy. This is the case in Somalia, as well as in Syria, Libya, and Yemen. Syrian people are moving to Europe in order to find a peaceful home. Mexican immigrants come to the US looking for jobs. The people then move to new countries where they don’t speak the national language. In America, when the immigrants come, there are many difficulties: cultural differences regarding time and scheduling, transportation issues, and language difficulties.
Migration and development with regards to Africa are two interdependent processes. In the hopes of diversifying their sources of income through development, people become mobile by seeking better living conditions, education and more advanced labor markets. Migration allows goods, services, skills and labor to be spread across Africa this is a positive thing in terms of the continents development as it becomes more productive.
First of all, I want to explain what the immigrants are. By “Immigration Assist” website, Immigrants are people who have citizenship in one country; however, they go to another country to establish a permanent residence.
The difference between refugees and immigrants is significant. Refugees migrate for reasons of safety or civil rights from their own country. They are usually in danger of losing their life. Humanities basic rights and simple safety are at risk. Immigrants migrate because they choose to look for a better life. Many times immigrants are seeking economic opportunities not available in their country of origin. These migrants could be seen as economic refugees because they are often unable to feed their families and must immigrate for work opportunities. This is usually due to disruptions in local economies, not dissimilar to situations feared in refugee populations.
My parents had go to Switzerland the week after for the funeral and the family. We had school going on and my parents decided to leave us with friends and go by their own. I stayed at a very good friend of mine, and my sister at one hers. They left and, where going to stay there at least a week. The time I spent there was really hard. Not only because the most helpful people I could have been with where away but I kept on having flashbacks.
This journey taught me so much that I wouldn’t have ever imagined. I grew from this experience mentally and I saw my parents becoming closer and regaining that bond they held with one another. This event taught me to be more appreciative with all the little things I have and made me realize that life isn’t going to go the way you want it to; you have to fight for the path to lead you in the right direction. I was brought closer to both my parents and my brothers. This event started new beginnings for this family, a new start to get things right because when I found out I would be moving to San Diego, I never would have realized the struggles I went through; especially when I was a silent voice in the decision.
