One common error in judgement is stereotypes(Bethel University, 2013). Stereotypes are judgements and overgeneralizations held by a person or a group about members of another group(Bethel University, 2013). Everybody is not the same, all people have their own unique differences. I personally have to remember this on a daily basis, with my team of sales people I lead at work. Each one of my team members responds to information I give them in a different way. I have developed a system, to reach each of them in their own way to better our communication as a group. We have a system that my employees are able to clock in for the day on their IPhone, and it sends a message to my IPad that they have started their day. If they are late, it adds a quarter of a point to their attendance policy for the year. Every morning I go through and check times, and add points as necessary. Seeing that this employee still had not clocked in I added the quarter of a point to his record. The next day in our weekly sales meeting, I passed out everyone’s attendance record, and the employee questioned me why he had received the quarter point. I explained he was late the day before, he then proceeded to tell me he was not, he had been on time and had screen shots of his time card saved to his phone. After reviewing the pictures and doing some follow up on the problem I learned from our IT department that there had been an issue with numerous phones that day, the employees clocked in as they should, the system just not register it. So after gathering all information and apologizing to my employee for my mistake, I removed the quarter of a point from his record. Another error in judgement is projection(Bethel University, 2013). For example, it has been said many times in multiple different ways that academic success is typically associated with certain races and not others. This is a very stereotypical comment and it is sad that these types of judgements are present in the educational system. In Beverly Daniel Tatum’s essay entitled, “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” she discusses how self-segregation occurs in the education system today. Tatum touches on that the possible reasons that students tend to socialize with students of the same racial identity as themselves are cultural stereotypes. It is understandable that a student in order to avoid judgements would want to be around others who understand them and know what they are going through at school. A possible and very hurtful example of judgement that may cause students of color to flock together is that “doing well in school becomes identified as trying to be White,” (Tatum). A student in today’s education system undergoes enough stress as it is and they should not have to be worried with racial protocols. Why is being advanced and thriving in school only to be considered a White characteristic? Assumptions influence our perceptions because when assumptions are made, it is often the case that there is not enough information for the assumptions to be accurate. Dillard gives an example that relates to this in her essay when she says, “[We] see what [we] expect” (Dillard 20). When an assumption is formed about a person or situation, then things that agree with that assumption is what is looked for, so that is what will be perceived. This may create inaccurate impressions. Another problem with making assumptions is that it is assumed that there is consistency to others’ behavior and often the focus on negative things about others. When it is assumed that there is consistency to others’ behavior, it is assumed that after seeing them act one way once or twice, they will always act like that. (Beebe 77). These examples relate to another idea that Dillard talks about in her essay. Dillard says, “Peeping through my keyhole I see within the range of only about thirty percent of light that comes from the sun…” (21). This agrees with an idea that people tend to ignore information when making perceptions and only looking at a small portion of the big picture and make perceptions based off of that. An example that relates to all of these would be if someone expects a person to be rude, then whenever those two people interact, rude behavior will be all that is looked for and all that is given any thought. People often form perceptions off of assumptions and small pieces of the big picture which oftentimes makes those perceptions that a person might have
When an individual unintentionally enters a room full of an unfamiliar crowd, he or she is bound to be embarrassed, but also have an apprehensive sensation of how others in that room will distinguish them. A situation like that establishes a moment in which that person realizes that all eyes are gaping at that individual. Just when that person could consider forgetting what just happened, unfortunately judgments start circulating among the unfamiliar crowd. Usually the stereotypes are generalizations based on superficial opinions, so they have an invalid connotation behind it. Most people aren’t familiar with ways our government is trying to lower health care costs of the homeless by putting them in houses, here is their chance to learn. “Housing First” approaches are aimed at reducing the number of homeless people in metropolitan cities, especially in USA and Canada. In Tulsa, the Mental Health Association operates housing models that are successful using the Housing First approach, but only with a success rate of around nine percent. These programs are able to help people achieve self-sufficiency. Special consideration is given to people who have mental illnesses. The main advantage of the approach is it makes an efficient use of the existing systems and services, and then eliminates the need for new ones. The approach has been said to lead to better quality of life, less alcohol and substance use among the beneficiaries, and less use of emergency services by the beneficiaries. Despite all of the advantages and purposes, the program has many challenges that make one think it’s not as successful as first projected. This could lead to program loss or the challenges being dealt with appropriately. If the government wants to use money to help end homelessness, they should put it towards resources and organizations that can, not towards homes where the homeless go to be ignored.

With the Social Judgement Theory; we take messages we hear and place them on an attitude scale in our mind. Our reading used the example of a man’s fear of flying and how someone might try to alleviate that fear. I personally know where this man is coming from; as I prefer not to fly unless it is necessary. This fear comes from seeing a plane crash personally and having to deal with the aftermath as a first responder. This theory goes into more detail of the message received by looking at how much does the person care and judging the message for content to decide if there should be a change or not.

Another truth we learn about human nature is that people are so quick to judge someone without getting to know them. An example is in high school classes when a student might ask a question that everyone already knows he/she can be labeled as stupid or slow. Maybe the kid wasn't paying attention or maybe they need to be taught in a different way.
An example of this is when people form judgements about certain events or topics such as the news. When people form judgements they do not come out of thin air; people form judgements using shared and personal knowledge, reason, perspective, and emotions. Depending on the topic, emotions may or may not play a large role in the formation of people’s judgements. This past summer, the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage which caused a huge controversy among many people. I remember seeing friends having large debates over social media about the court’s ruling. In summer school two people got into a heated argument when discussing the topic in my government class. When people asked me for my opinion on the ruling, I simply refused to comment so that I would not get into a debate with another person. Were people placing a large emphasis on their emotions when forming their judgements? There was a sense of confirmation bias among the people when they were debating. This confirmation bias stemmed from a strong emotional attachment to one’s opinions. It is up to the person to decide whether or not they act on their emotions.
