If one considers the person he is at seventy, he realizes that he is the compilation of a series of experiences, explorations and examinations. Erik Erikson believed that the totality of human personality was molded by the psychological and social encounters faced during one’s lifetime. Erikson discusses key values that are essential to the stages in one’s life. Although he considers several values, the ones that are key to a full and content life are determination, resilience, and love of others. To be underdeveloped in these three capacities may mean a life that is marked by, self doubt, rigidity, and isolation, both physical and emotional. During infancy, the basic conflict is trust versus mistrust, which is connected to feeding and forming attachment to one’s parent. This stage lasts only one year. From ages one to three, children will face an autonomy versus shame conflict, which may involve actions as basic as toilet training. The next stage, play age, spans from ages three to six. This stage introduces the challenge of initiative verses inferiority and will test a child’s competency in performing school tasks. Adolescence, the next stage, lasts from ages 12 through 19 and involves an individual’s ability to connect and interact with his peers. During ages 20-25, an individual enters early adulthood; the basic confrontation or “crisis” during this time will concern love relations. Determination, which is a value that takes route in early childhood is essential for persevering through the obstacles that life presents to us. From my personal experiences, determination enabled me to overcome a difficult disease as well as my own perceptions of my body and mind. If a toddler understands that determination and perseverance yield positive outcomes, then that toddler will make it applicable to any other endeavors encountered later on. Resilience, which is closely linked to determination, is also, with out a doubt necessary for healthy human development. Resiliency is a quality that galvanizes when weathering the storms of life. Whereas determination enables you to overcome an obstacle, resiliency allows you to bounce back from that specific hurdle and keep on going with an open mind. In my case, after I regained my health, I went to Israel to play tournament tennis. Furthermore, I dedicated my entire being to becoming stronger, not only physically, but mentally as well. Finally, love of others is perhaps the most necessary ingredient for life. This includes romantic and/or platonic love. Man is not meant to live in a vacuum all alone. Eric Erikson developed eight different psychosocial stages which emphasize the lifespan development during the major periods in life. The first psychosocial stage is infancy and it embraces the age of birth to one year old. The infancy crisis is trust versus mistrust which emphasizes that if children are taken care of; they will be able to gain confidence as well as trust. In the other hand, if they developed mistrust they will develop a sense of insecurity. Erickson’s second stage is toddlerhood which embraces the ages of one to three and deals with the stage crisis of autonomy versus shame and doubt. In the toddlerhood stage, toddlers are able to use mental skills and are able to start deciding for themselves. The third stage is early childhood, and it embraces the ages of three to six with the stage crisis of initiative versus guilt. During the early childhood stage children are able to gain the characteristics of ambition and responsibility and it is developed through the parent’s support. Fast forward my future to what psychologist Erik Erikson identifies as the Late Adulthood (55- 65 to Death) stage of life in his Stages of Psychosocial Development. There are two options as one reflects on their lives and they include: Integrity vs. Despair. I hope through the choices I make that I am in the Integrity department of happiness and content, feeling a sense of fulfillment and meaning and that I have made a contribution to life. Of course, there may be disappointments in life and we don’t know what the future holds and although I am nervous and anxious of where I will be in the next three months and in the next thirty years, I am also optimistic and excited to see what the future has in store for me.

Erik Erikson (1950, 1982) proposed a developmental model where one grows old and looks back at their life with satisfaction or despair. Erikson’s theory focused on growing older as a conclusion to the developmental process whereas Lars Tornstam (1988, 1990) found, contrary to expectations, people actually are less lonely as they grow older. Erik Erikson was a researcher of the Psychodynamic perspective who lived through the years 1902 to 1994. He developed a theory that dealt with the stages of human development and was referred to as a Neo-Freudian. A Neo-Freudian are those “who have revised Sigmund Freud’s theory” (Massey, 1986). His theory argued that “both society and culture challenge and shape us” (Feldman, 2011). Erik Erikson’s theory of psychological development does not specify specific ages, so the age categories can only be guessed upon. It is my personal thought that this was a smart move due to different age milestones for different cultures. The essay titled Erik Erikson: Ages, stages, and stories argues that the stages “are organized into a system of polarities that tempt us to think about psychological dynamics in a form that is more binary than Erikson intended.” Each stage has a ‘resolution’ or goal. During this stage, an infant is confused about the world being a safe place and wonders if his or her needs will be met. As a result, the infant looks to the primary caretaker for consistent care and hope that his or her needs can be met. Initiative vs. Guilt that happens between 3 and 5 years is the stage that follows. During this stage, children take more initiative to engage with peers. Erikson explains that during this stage if children are given the opportunity to take initiative, they will develop a sense of security in their ability to lead. The basic virtue in this stage is purpose. Industry vs. Inferiority, which happens between 5 and 12 years, emphasizes school and friendships. As a child begins to enter adolescence, there appears to be a rise in conflict between the adolescent and parents. The amount of conflict differs from family to family and is dependent on many factors. It is mainly due to the changing characteristics and growing of the adolescent and the way in which the rest of the family adjusts to these changes.

Unlike other theorists of his time Erikson’s theory focused on human development across the lifespan from birth to late adulthood. Erickson believed that development change occurs through out our lives in eight distinctive stages that emerge in a fixed pattern and are similar for all people. Erickson argued that each stage presents a crisis or conflict which results in either a positive or negative outcome (Feldman). In this essay I will identify incidents in my own life that demonstrate each stage of development according to Erickson that I have lived through. I will also interview my Aunt Tami who will share her experiences for the remainder stages of Erickson’s development that I have not gone through thus far.
