THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH
PROVERBS AND SAYINGS
There are two main aims in teaching foreign languages to students of linguistic departments of higher educational establishments: formation and development of phonetically, grammatically and lexically correct speech and adoption of the foreign language culture. Thus the process of learning a foreign language shouldn’t be only pragmatic, but also spiritual. An effective way of getting acquainted with the latter one is using phraseological units, idiomatic expressions, proverbs and sayings in the process of teaching, which reflect the social experience, traditions, customs, ways of behavior of people, for whom the language under study is native.

For example, the proverb The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence is literally translated as «Трава всегда зеленее по ту сторону забора».
But there isn”t no such a proverb in the Russian language. Partially it corresponds semantically to the Russian saying «Хорошо там, где нас нет».
As well one has to remember that in every language there are phrases and expressions which can’t be perceived literally, even if one understands the semantic and grammatical meaning of every word. The idea of this proverb or saying seems obscure and strange. The attempts to translate these expressions word for word can lead to an unexpected and often very odd result. For example, the English phrase no room to swing a cat (literally «нет места, чтобы размахивать кошкой») corresponds to the Russian equivalent «яблоку негде упасть».
When choosing an equivalent to English idioms, phraseological units, proverbs and sayings we should try to find some grammatical or semantic correspondence in both expressions, for instance to correlate some familiar parts
The Iranian Revolution of 1979 had an enormous effect on many Iranians, including those who had immigrated to other places. But not the Dumas family. They were fortunate enough to have immigrated to America before that shift in the government. They were able to experience American hospitality in its truest form. Take, for example, the sentence “God can make a square circle.” We know this sentence is grammatically correct because it follows all the rules of grammar, but, and this cannot be emphasized enough, that does not mean that this sentence makes any sense! To elucidate this, notice that the word “God” refers to some being, “can make” refers to a capacity that being has, but what on earth does “square-circle” refer to? This is pivotal: if a word fails to refer to something, then it doesn’t have any meaning (A. W. Sparks 1-2). The sentence “I saw a gruth” doesn’t have any meaning because “gruth” doesn’t refer to anything.
Wisdom literature has long been a guiding tool among cultures from all ages throughout history. The acquisition of wisdom and virtuous living is something many have sought after. In Ancient Near East cultures, two prominent wisdom texts were in circulation that shaped how people lived and interacted with one another, The Instruction of Amenemope and the Book of Proverbs. Though it is argued by many that the Instruction of Amenemope precedes Proverbs, it is undeniable that the two resemble each other in both form and content. While each possesses unique characteristics that differentiate the two, both portray pictures of the wise man and the heated, evil man, address issues surrounding honesty, and deal with right living before a deity.

Expressions such as these can cause miscommunications, misunderstandings, and basically just a lot of confusion.

English was a course I usually breezed through during high school. It was never my best or favorite subject but it sparked interest when I was able to choose my own topics for papers. Writing persuasively was one of my fortes and feel that factual writing is something I generally excel at. The two languages are very similar, so much that it is very easy to understand between the two countries. The languages do not need translation due to writing in what is called standard English. Standard English is the written English format used in all three countries making it very versatile and easy to understand. There only a handful of similarities between American English and British English. There is more of a difference than there are similarities.
