Throughout this semester, I was able to learn many writing skill and was able to develop as a writer. When I found out that I was scheduled to be in English Composition I, I was very nervous as I have always felt that writing was one of the skills that I needed to improve on. Although I usually received good grades on my essays, I did not like writing them since it would always take me more than five hours to write a one page essay. If I wanted a good grade in English Composition I, I knew that I was definitely going to have to improve on my grammars. The main skills that we learned in this class were writing a clear thesis statement, paragraph structures, and sensory details. Through this class, I was able to attain more knowledge in these areas and gain confidence in my writing skills. The areas that I have improved on over the course of the semester are staying in the same tense, using …show more content…
transitions, and using the university databases for academic research. In my first essay for English Composition, I struggled to stay in the same tense throughout the paper. I had never payed attention to the tense that I was using in any of the papers that I wrote before this class, and I had still managed to get good grades on them. When I heard that I had to stay in the same tense throughout the paper, I knew that it was definitely going to one of my weakness. In my Analytical Narrative, I wrote, “When it rains there, we have to walk on the muddy, brown ground since there’s no paved road at the market areas,” after writing the rest of the paper in the past tense. Since the sentence sounded correct to me, I felt that this was the correct way to write it. I realized that I had to take extra caution to stay in the past tense throughout the paper after I got it back. I was able to apply my knowledge of staying in the same tense throughout the paper to my Film Analysis, where I did not make the mistake of tense flip flopping. Since I chose to use present tense in my Film Analysis, I wrote, “The decision was not an easy one to make for Tris since her older brother, who gets called before her, chooses to join a different faction.” Because of this class, I was able to realize the importance of staying in the same tense throughout the paper. In addition to the improvement in using the same tense throughout the paper, I was able to improve on transitions.
Before this class, I felt that transitions were only needed at the beginning of each paragraph. Consequently, I stated, “ Kate Winslet was actually five months pregnant when she filmed the movie,” after introducing the revenue that the movie made in the opening week. I had made the grave mistake of not transitioning into my notable fact, which caused the sentence to feel out of place. Through this class, I learned that transitions were important when I moved from one idea to another completely different idea. In my Ethnographic Research essay, I wrote, “Walking into the Akron Children’s Hospital, I can barely hear the lobby’s television, as it is overpowered by the laughing and screaming of the children,” to transition into my first hand experience from my expectations for the subculture that I chose to participate in. Not only was I able to learn the importance of using transitions throughout the paper, I was also able to properly apply that skill to my
papers. For the first time, I learned how to use the university database for academic research through this class. I had never been taught to use the university database for academic research, so I had always been using books or other online sources that seemed credible and was approved by the teachers. In order to access the university database, I learned that I had to click on the category called “libraries”, which can be found in the website for the University of Akron. After I clicked under a category titled “Databases by Title,” I went on to further click on “Academic search complete.” Once I arrived in the university database, I just had to search my topic to find credible sources on it. This class taught me to use the university database for academic research. This course did not fail to meet my expectations as it was challenging and difficult, which I had already expected. Through the difficulty, I was able to gain more writing skills and develop as a writer. Not only was I able to improve on transitions, staying in the same tense, and using the university database for academic research, I was also able to understand the significance of clear thesis statement, paragraph structures, and sensory details in order to write a clear paper that is easily understood. I will be able to use the skills learned in this throughout my life.
English 101 is one of the most common college courses in the world. When I enrolled in the class, I was bothered that I would have spend forty hours in a freshman writing class; along with at least another forty hours throughout the semester writing for the class. What surprised me, was that when I began writing my essays I was not annoyed or bothered; I actually enjoyed the assignments. Most importantly, throughout the course of the semester, I have become a better writer and have ultimately met the course goals of English 101.
When I was first accepted into the AP Language & Composition course, I felt overwhelmed. I had always received above average grades in all subject areas, but because this was an AP course I was unsure if my English skills were up to par. During the summer, my anxiety about the course increased. I began to feel that my writing skills were inferior to the skills of my peers’. Before this course, I did not have a developed writing voice or style. I had little knowledge of what phrases or words to avoid using in writing. I started to wonder if I truly belonged in an AP course. After having completed this course, I have a better grasp of the English language and have acquired skills that have improved my writing.
The first essay given in this course was about our whole composing process. This essay was hard to write about and I remember having several grammar mistakes. Sitting down and writing my process on paper,
English Composition II has unexpectedly improved my writing into an academic level. As I studied various English reading and writing courses, this class “English Composition II” did not immediately caught my eye. However as I researched about the concepts of this class, the decision to make was not so difficult since I was lacking in critical thinking and the interpretation of works. Also as a Business Major, it made sense that the subject of English would be of interest to me and as a career requirement. During the first weeks, I thought that I would be fully prepared for this course after taking an accelerated course in English during the spring semester. However, after attending class for about a month, I certainly did not expect to learn an entirely new process of writing
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
This trimester I began the class English 101 with mixed feelings. Depending on the topic and style, I could really enjoy writing. However, there were occasionally times where I just did not feel much inspiration, and consequently, my writing quality was not exactly remarkable. My previous course to English 101 was AP Literature, where I learned how to analyze writing and write powerful papers. Although, to my disadvantage for this class, the teacher was more concerned about content than presentation and grammar technicalities. I learned to create good ideas and responses, and while I did possess the ability to convey them with proficiency, I could not express myself at a college level. Nonetheless, I can happily report that I have acquired these skills throughout English 101, learning to curb my near addiction to prepositional phrases, in addition to halting my use of coordinating conjunctions to begin sentences. I find it pleasing to read and compare my first essay to my latest one, seeing all of the differences and enhancements. My writing has improved through the trials of in-depth analyses and short deadlines, enabling me to perform my best no matter the style or topic. Overcoming the oppositions found in the class and my own
2. Yes, transitions are used to connect sentences and ideas, such as “Another aspect” or “Lastly.” I see various transitions that are used properly in your essay, and they help to connect your ideas well.
This course was the first course I took as an incoming freshman, as anyone could imagine I was scared and nervous at the same time. Also since it is a writing course; I was hesitant if I wanted to continue in the class because writing is very challenging for me as an immigrant. Returning from summer break, I found it extremely tough to continue where I left off with my writing skills from high school. The fear of writing that my old high school teacher instilled in me did not help my writing anxiety either. In contrast, I found that the professor and the course were not at all intimidating as I assumed, the professor took time from his busy schedule to help his students to further improve their writing and the writing topics were very stimulating and thought provoking. Composition 1 has helped me learn more about myself and my writing skills, which allowed me to further self-evaluate myself, find where I need improvement and become motivated to change.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but I had to drop it because I didn’t have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn’t understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I wasn’t that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester.
Throughout this fall semester, I have learned many things. Before this class, I have never had to buckle down and plan out my writing so tediously. The many outlines, rough drafts, and final drafts have crafted me into a much better writer than I would have ever expected to become. While I have always considered English as one of my strong subjects, through this class I have learned that English has many more components than I originally thought. One of the most substantial of these components is a transitional sentence and through this class and the writing practice it has brought me, I have learned how to properly write them.
This class has been significantly more difficult than any other English class I have taken all throughout high school. This semester, I have been introduced to different styles of writing that I have never been exposed to before. This class has been stressful, but also fun. With using all of the resources I have been given throughout the semester, I have been able to do my best to further my writing abilities and hopefully only continue to grow them as I finish my later years in college. Throughout this essay, I will discuss my failures, my successes, my overall performance in the class, and my skill development skills.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
When I received my pre-registration paperwork at the end of my tenth grade year, I automatically knew what English class I wanted to take. Many people had spoken to me about the class and explained that it was a more challenging curriculum, but I knew that it would help prepare me for my journey to university. This class was English Composition I. I was delighted to be taking a college class when I was just a mere junior in high school, even though I knew that it would be more difficult than an average high school course. When the class began, my writing style was simple, and I thought that I could breeze through because that had worked for me in the past.
... essay looks so discontinuous. I realize that to make my article better, the transition between paragraphs are really important because it can give readers a sense of what I am talking about.
