English A Summer’s Reading Respect is a very dominant and important factor in the story of Bernard Malamud, “A Summer’s Reading.” The reach for respect from the people around him causes a lot of dilemma within the main character, George Stoyonovic. And those dilemmas led to consequences that George hated. George, a high school drop out, can not get any job during one summer. He decides to read the magazines found at home. But when he met Mr. Cattanzara, he immediately lies about the hundred books he is reading, in order for Mr. Cattanzara to respect him as well as to be proud of him. Respect is a form of acknowledgement of one’s existence. Respect is very important to everybody. Respect also gives a person a sense of confidence that he is not a failure and contradicts the idea that he is not good enough. People want respect because they want others to know how good they are. Though everybody wants it, most people often take it for granted. The irony of it all is that people wants it so much that they would do anything just to get it. In the story, the theme Respect is very important for everybody was shown a couple of times. An example of these scenes is when George was contemplating whether or not he should attend the night classes. “He has considered registering in a night high school, only he did not like the idea of teachers always telling him what to do. He felt that they had not respected him.” He decides that since he has nothing to do at home, attending night-class would be great and it would help him catch up on the lessons he has missed. But that the idea of teachers telling him what to do causes George to think twice. He thinks that when his teachers tell him what to do or should not do it shows a lack of respect on the teachers’ part. He then feels that he is not good enough and loses confidence in himself. But in reality, when people tell you what to do, it means that they are concerned about you and that they know that you can do better but it does not really mean that you are not good enough as a person. They are actually acknowledging your abilities and your capabilities which also acknowledge your existence. George searches for respect because it is where he gets the confidence that will enable him to move on forward with his life. Another instance in the story where it shows respect is very important is when George tells Mr.

anything besides school books and everyone tells him to be this or that but no one tells him how.
Watching Nick in the classroom allowed me to observe his social interactions, how he handles himself when he is working alone, how he handles working while interacting and how he contributes in class. The class’s first assignment was to find a quiet place and read silently for fifteen minutes. Nick sat alone and couldn’t sit still. This was a warning sign for me because he was the only student that could not sit still. Another red flag came up when I started watching Nick closer while he wandered. He was constantly asking classmates and the teacher questions during a task that should not have required questions. An additional issue came up when he attempted to put his book away. He was trying to push it into an area that was too small. He was not able to understand that in order to put his books back he was going to have to move some other things around. Instead he proceeded to make a small mess and a frustrated classmate helped him fix
He had days during each he would follow direction and seem eager to learn, other days he just was not into the sessions. Sometimes, there are words in the story that are utilized more than twice, I would make them repeat the words, read them repeatedly, and even learn to spell the words, however when I gave him an activity in which the word is feature he even though he recognizes the words, but he could not pronounce it. Frequently, he forgot words that he knew before but remember words that he just learn, other times it the complete opposite. That is why certain things that we work with I make sure that they are repeated, even if he’s learning something new I make sure implemented some of the old things to keep refreshing his
The United States is made up of many different ethic groups. These groups vary from Latinos, Asian American, African American, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans, and etc. These ethnic groups come into America speaking many different languages. However, many people are still surprised to learn that the United States has no official language. Many assume that English is the official language of the United States. But despite efforts over the years, the United States has no official language. Because the United States has no official language, it is suffering with large costs. These large costs will lead us on a road to wasteful government expenses, language battles that fuel ethnic resentment, and in the long run serious ethnic and linguistic separatist movements. An official English legislation is the answer to the problem.
Because of his cultural background my father found my brother's poor performance in school incomprehensible. I too was puzzled by my brother's attitude towards school. He and I grew up in the same house with the same parents and the same set of values. Yet, he seemed to not care about school at all. For a long time, my family and I attributed my brother's C's in school and obvious inability to concentrate to laziness and a lack of motivation.

Living in the United States as a Korean-American was not an easy task growing up. Sure I knew how to read and write English, but I did not know how to read, speak, and write my native language. It was difficult for me emotionally because I felt other people looked down on me especially Korean adults who often asked me why I did not know how to speak Korean in which I had no direct answer. "You should know how to at least speak Korean," they commonly spoke in a friendly tone, trying not to hurt my feelings. In my seventh grade year, I had the urge to take a step in order for me to fit in with the rest of my fellow peers, the Korean sub communities, and feel better about myself.
I think and say to myself over and over again, why, why must this world be how it is? As a mortal human, it's normal to want more than what you have. This situation is very well known in America. It's called overindulging. Feeling the need that one of something just isn't enough. That is wrong. Even though, us humans think it is natural, we don't deserve the extra something when it isn't needed.
Essentially, by taking things for granted it “yanks [people] out of the present moment and sabotages [their] enjoyment, [their] attention is placed elsewhere and [their] experiences are dulled” (Chelsea). People’s experiences and moments with those around them is what shapes everything in their lives. Once something or a loved one is gone, all most do is yearn for another moment with it. They immediately begin to regret all the times they should have appreciated and cared for them but they didn’t. As long as humans continue to take things for granted, “the mindset can lead [people] to behave in careless ways, to mistreat the people [they] care about, and to fail to say or do what is really in [their] hearts” (Breines 1). As simple as it is, believing something will last forever can only lead to terrible afterthoughts and experiences. Instead of living in the moment, people’s lives would be filled with regret. Life would leave them constantly thinking about the things they should have done instead of the things they already achieved with their valued belongings. In order for people to stop regretting their lives, it is essential to find a way to stop themselves from falling into the mindset again and continue taking things for
Beers discusses the three identifiable characteristics in a child that is not interested in learning: inactivity, lack of dedication, and non-motivation.
For many years, the thought of English being the official language of the United States has come with a little controversy. Some argue that English should be the official language because it is the most dominant language in the world. Some believe by doing so, it would create a stronger unity among the American people. Proponents believe that although the United States is diverse, it may be too much for the American people to juggle multiple languages. Others believe that English shouldn’t be the official language and instead be one of many prominent languages that are widely used in our nation such as Spanish, French, and Chinese. I believe English should be the official language in the United States. However, I believe more emphasis should be placed on learning new languages especially among youths in school and during developmental stages.
In the book, World War Z, by Max Brooks, a character named Roy Elliot says, “When I believe in my ability to do something, there is no such word as no.” (160). This semester in English 112, I have challenged myself to earn an A in this course. After the first day of class back in August I knew this class was a perfect fit for me. I knew the guidelines and expectations were set high and would be beneficial towards my challenge to earn an A. Every night before I go to bed I make sure to back my backpack so that I am prepared with all my material. Another essential part of my bedtime routine is to set my alarm early enough so that I give myself enough time to get ready for my day and arrive to class before it starts so that I am not rushed. My goal to earn an A in English 112 came to an abrupt halt when I noticed that I had failed an assignment, the Bundy Citation Exercise. I received 28 out of 50 possible points on the assignment. I knew that I had to really work hard to earn higher grade on my future assignments. When I got the citation exercise back I notice
Over the years English inarguably has reached a status of a global language and commonly is characterized as a lingua franca. It has become the language that is spoken by millions of people all over the world; as the mother tongue, as the language used for international communication and as the language learned in the millions of schools.
