Success in English 111
The most important paper anyone will receive in any course will be given out on the first day of class. This paper is called a syllabus. According to the dictionary, the definition of a syllabus is an academic document that communicates course information and defines expectations and responsibilities. Some examples of what is on a standard syllabus are due dates, rules of the class and/or school, expected course schedule, required materials for the class, information about the instructor, where the class meets and at what time, and information about what to do if you miss class. Instructors spend a lot of time making a syllabus for their class and expect students to read and pay attention to what is included on it. They give out syllabi to help their students succeed in class by telling them what to expect in their course.

There are many ways any student can be successful in English 111.
Attending class without being late is the first action of success. When a student misses a class, they can miss a lot. Firstly, they won’t know what was covered in class and will miss any notes the class wrote down. Secondly, there’s a good chance the student could have missed a test or a quiz, which can be a little difficult to make up if allowed. Thirdly, if the student arrives late they create a distraction to the rest of the class. It’s very rude to do this to their fellow classmates and especially to the instructor. The student should also always bring in their required materials to class such as textbooks, pens or pencils, paper, and their homework. Submitting their classwork and/or homework on time and paying attention in class is a very important factor of success. Students should follow the class rules and the rules of the school they attend at all
times. Personally, there are many things from the syllabus that I need to remember. I forget things quite easily so remembering due dates is the first priority for me. It would be wise of me to complete assignments early so I am ready before the due date. It is important for me to keep in mind that homework cannot be turned in late or made up. My writing assignments will need to be submitted two different ways. I need to upload one copy of my paper to Blackboard. The other form of submission I am required to do is to print out a copy of the assignment and bring it to class on the due date. Peer workshop days means that I need to bring in a draft of my paper to be edited by my classmates. If I do not do this, I will miss out on my paper being edited. If I am absent during a group writing activity, said activity will be done on my own and due by the second day I arrive to class. My success in this course depends on me doing quite a few things. As stated in the previous paragraph, I seriously need to remember due dates. I intend on writing these down in not only my school planner, but on my calendar at home as well. It is very important that I submit my homework on time and try my best on it. Coming to class on time is one of the most important things for me to do. I am fully committed to showing up for class every day and I need to keep that promise to myself. While in class, I need to give the instructor my full attention. This means acting differently than I did in high school. College is very different from high school and I need to remember that fact. The most important thing for me to do to succeed in this course is to believe in myself. English has always been one of my better subjects in school so I know I have what it takes to succeed. Despite any mental setbacks, truly believing in myself will push me farther than I expect. In conclusion, there are many ways for me and any other student to succeed in this course. Simply reading the syllabus can give anyone a good idea of what to expect throughout the semester and that alone can help them succeed. My mother always told me to just show up to class at the very least. I’ve always felt that this was actually very wise advice. Being in class can influence anyone to pay attention, especially if there is nothing to distract them. Also, some instructors count attendance as part of the grade. If you’re already in class, and your presence is causing your grade to climb, then why not participate as well? If you participated, why not complete your classwork and homework? Any student can succeed in this course, and so will I.
When in the course of human events, students should be entering school a little bit later than the usual. This will give the student more sleep time which then will allow the student to think better when in school. This will also help a student be fully awake and not be sleeping in class. Students will pay more attention and will be ready to learn. Waking up early and going to school early makes a student be sleepy in class. We the students should be getting a later start in school.
My experience into English 111 not only left me anxious, it became a self-revelation. My learning capabilities were challenged because writing did not come natural and the possibility of becoming a prominent writer were going to take a lot of time, effort and hard work. In spite of not knowing what to expect, I entered into this new semester pumped up carrying an “I can do this” attitude and feeling confident.
Success comes to those who follow the guidance of a trusted source. In this case for English 111 we are introduced to a syllabus that we can reference to make sure we are on the right track. The syllabus goes from talking about what the course is about, to how everything will be graded, as well as what is expected from the student. Students are expected to turn all assignments in electronically via blackboard before class starts on the due date. The syllabus does give you a grace period to turn assignments in late, but your grade will be deducted points. To reach your highest potential average in the class its best to turn all assignments in on time if not early. When we make the effort to turn things in early, we have time to proofread and turn in something worth reading. We are also less stressed and feel ready to tackle the next assignment without mental distress.
I am determined to have a perfect attendance when it comes to my college classes. Keeping a balanced attendance allows me to be up to date with assignments and set an excellent example of myself. Participating in class activities like writing on the board or reading aloud examples, was not my one of my biggest strong suits. Although I spoke out in my assigned groups, which brought a lot more attention to myself, I did not openly speak out in front of the whole class and volunteer myself. This is a certain area that I need to improve on. Although I did not speak out as openly as I should, I always came fully prepared. Being prepared and organized helped keep everything I needed together so I could perform at my fullest potential. In addition, I made sure to create reminders on my phone notifying what I would need, when to work on a certain assignment for the class, and especially for my conferences with Dr. Kennedy (refer to page 3). For my future classes, I will continue to have perfect attendance, be organized, and practice my writing. In time, I will become better at speaking out in
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
June just yelled at the Glorious Elector of The Republic, to be a better politician. She brought up the topic of separating emotions of going into war, “You have to make decisions that break your heart, that hurt and deceive, that no one else will understand. It’s your duty”. That isn’t always the case, where you have to rise up the courage to tell someone in power, that they are doing their job wrong and even if they are living their life wrong. June Iparis explains how to use justification “When emotion fails, logic will save you.” (177)
Some professors in universities and some departments have very tight polices related with attendance. There are many universities and colleges in the world which doesn’t consider regular attendance in their grading part system. Sometime if the professor knows about the excessive number of times the student was absent they will mark the name of student and the final grade of that class is lowered. This topic is an issue of debate all over the world. Some people support this rule while other is against this rule. In this paper, I have presented many arguments in favor of strict attendance policy while some arguments are against the strict attendance policy. Students in college and universities are matured enough to take their own decision (Bastedo,
Teachers in college for the most part don't really care whether or not you are in class. All it means is that if you are not there, you are going to get a failing grade if it happens too often. Missing too many classes will cause the teacher to withdraw you from the class, resulting in a failing grade. If you do it the smart way you would withdraw from the class yourself because then it would have no negative effect on your overall G.P.A. In high school the teachers are always on you about attendance. If you miss too many days you can fail. If you are not in class they want to know why. They also want a note from your parents excusing you from class. Some schools even want your parents to call you in sick if you are not going to be there. If you do not have a note they can write you up for an unauthorized absence and, give you a detention.
A high school class and a college class are conducted in different ways. In high school, teachers exercise control over the flow of information, while college professors encourage the student to seek out pertinent information. Throughout the year, a high school teacher will remind the student of upcoming due dates and assignment requirements. If a student misses a test or homework assignment, the teacher will provide missing notes or study guides so that the student is kept up to date with the rest of the class. For example; when I was in high school, I missed a week of school to go on vacation with my family. My mother spoke with my teacher before we left and he agreed to let me turn in my homework when I returned to class. Furthermore, my teacher allowed me to make up the single quiz that I missed during my absence. Neither the late homework, nor the missed quiz reflected in my grade. A college professor would have made me choose between a good grade and a vacation with my family. In contrast, the college professor...
Many students that go to college miss class for many different reasons. Some reasons for missing class are acceptable and should be handled accordingly. Colleges should get on board and create a mandatory attendance policy. Creating this will help avoid many problems in the future for the student. This change will be beneficial for the students and professors.
The syllabus contains the instructor’s contact information and an outline of what is taught and assigned. This
It is one of the simplest things that you could do to succeed in college. Just showing up to class gets you started with that material that you will have to study up on in the future. This is an area that I am good at. I have always showed up to class to get the most out of my time there. I am always attending class mostly because I would feel bad if I were to ever skip class. To overcome this obstacle, you just need motivation to go to class. If you have a morning class, get plenty of sleep the night before so you are fully attentive in the
I have worked for five years in a high school as a chemistry teacher and I have seen a huge number of absenteeism daily over this time. As a high school educator, one should determine cases of absenteeism in school. In my experience in science class there is a clear and stable relationship between attendance and performance. In m...
The syllabus is a commonly created and shared document in the education world (Parkes & Harris, 2010). For some high school, and most higher education courses, it is the first form of contact between an instructor and their students. The organization and content of the syllabus sets the tone of the course and stands as a resource throughout the semester or year. Continual analysis, reflection and refinement helps to maintain the syllabus as a dynamic educational resource for every student in that class (Slattery & Carlson, 2010). An effective syllabus provides, not only an introduction and overview into the course, but also outlines the academic standards and essential questions that are to be covered, shares the course schedule and
Mandatory attendance policy does not really enhance students' school performance as it's usually expected. Some teachers and schools believe students would study better if they come to class regularly. They argue that all lessons in text books should be explained, discussions should be held with full class. If students do not come to class, they would study nothing or make no progress. Some even think of students as lazy creatures who play truant to do everything they like but homework or assigned reading, so they take roll-call to ensure that all students come to class and work with them. What i can say is that attending class regularly does not mean you will have better understanding or performance. Some students sometimes miss class but they still study well. That's because there are some lessons they can study by themselves at home without spending too much time as those who study in class. On the other hand, so...
