In the class English 111, I have learned many things that will benefit me later on throughout my school years. I was acknowledged on what my strengths and weaknesses are in writing, and also what I can improve on. By reflecting on this past semester, this course has taught me a lot about writing and I have seen major improvement in my writing skills. I have furthered my knowledge about what my strengths are in writing and why they are, by taking this course. I know now that my strengths as a writer are descriptive and creative writing because the papers that required a lot of that were the easiest papers I had written. My descriptive narrative paper was my strongest since I was able to use my creative skills and I also knew more about the subject. I would be able to strengthen my descriptive and creative …show more content…
writing skills by learning more creative writing techniques and also just practicing writing those types of papers. I also was able to learn what my weaknesses in writing were and why. Analyzing and other papers based off of facts were my weakness since it was a little tricky trying to not base everything on opinion and having to use concrete evidence. My analyse paper was my weakest since I was not entirely sure how to prove my thesis statement and I was not terribly familiar with writing those types of papers. By focusing on proving the stated facts or evidence, along with practicing writing those types of papers, I would then be able to become a better factual writer. Haymes Taking this class has allowed me to learn many things about my writing throughout the entire semester.
I've learned that I am a stronger writer than I thought I was since I found that it was quite easy for me to prove my thesis statement clearly. Having to do pre-writing helped me discover certain flaws in my work and has made my writing much better than it was before I started the class. Being able to improve my ability to elaborate and discuss evidence/quotes even more would have been most helpful to me after completing this course. Taking English 111 was extremely helpful in improving my writing skills. Learning many different things throughout this semester will allow me to do better for other classes to come. I believe that I earned a high B in this class for completing all of my work and participating in class, even though I did not make the highest grade on every paper, I was still used the writing strategies that I learned in class. Knowing what I can improve on and what I am good at will allow me to better my writing skills in the future and hopefully will allow me to help others with their writing as
well.
Another thing that I learned from taking this course is how to build a better writing and reading skills. Acknowledging reading and writing skills will help me to succeed in my other university courses.
The purpose of English 111 is to help students create a foundation of writing skills so that they may better succeed at UW through their understanding of writing and how they can improve their writing skills. In order to achieve this goal students are expected to write essays throughout the course that will help them become more proficient in the four Course Goals set up to guide students in their learning process. The first course goal is that students be able to recognize strategies employed by writers in different forms of literary works. Students practice this skill through the reading and discussion of many different forms of literature in order to learn how writing strategies are used throughout these texts. The second course goal is
I have learned a lot so far in English 1101, about myself and about writing. I have discovered that it is sometimes difficult for me to find topics to write about, but once I get an idea it is very easy for me to start writing. English has always been one of the subjects that I tend to struggle with, but this class has helped me realize that I actually enjoy writing. I have never really been able to write a lot about topics of my choice in the past. I am more accustomed to writing papers related to one specific topic. This class gives you a prompt to write about, but you are generally able to expand on that and choose your own topic as long as it relates to the prompt.
My experience into English 111 not only left me anxious, it became a self-revelation. My learning capabilities were challenged because writing did not come natural and the possibility of becoming a prominent writer were going to take a lot of time, effort and hard work. In spite of not knowing what to expect, I entered into this new semester pumped up carrying an “I can do this” attitude and feeling confident.
The course pushed me to find my inner creativity and express myself in my writings. Each day I was assigned a journal topic that I had the
My biggest improvement in this English 111 class was my writing. Writing tasks that were assigned greatly strengthened my overall performance throughout the course, preparing me for the future classes. The environment made me feel at ease, helping me evolve as a student, and as a person. The environment made me feel at ease, preparing me for future classes. Another large achievement of mine that I displayed in the class, was my ability to talk comfortably with the other students. The variety of group activities we did allowed me to openly speak my opinion, leading to a better overall performance with my work and papers. The English 111 class enabled me to have better participation in and out of class and allowed
Without doubt besides to know how to write a sentence, it is vital to know the parts of an essay. In this course I had the opportunity to go through different types of essays that helped me to understand how an introduction, thesis, body paragraphs, and conclusion work. Also, how these parts are connected together and make a different function depending of what type of essay I am writing for example, argumentation, narration, process, or any other. Although, I cannot say I became a professional writer after have learned this points, I can say, I became a better one.
What I learned in English 1113 I am an international student from China and this is my first semester studying at the University of Oklahoma. ENGL 1113 Principles of English Composition is the basic academic writing class for all the students at the OU. According to the First-Year Composition, English 1113 focuses on the language of power in two ways “the power of language” and “the relationship between power and language “(First-Year Composition). English 1113 helps students learn how to use language analysis and understand reading materials. More than that, English 1113 teaches the format of the essay, which is MLA.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
I have always known that writing was not my strong point. Entering writing 101 in September I was very much afraid. I knew that the expectations would be very high for this course; thus it would be more difficult than any other writing class I had previously taken. At first writing was a nightmare for me, but thanks to the assistance from professor Smart and my tutors, I have improved drastically in my writing skills and, as a result I am now a better writer. During the course of four months, I have learned so much. There were a few bumps in the way throughout the semester, but I managed to overcome them. It is hard to believe that my journey in writing 101 is coming to an end. Through my hard work and dedication, this class has helped me to build confidence in my writing that will help me throughout my college life.
In conclusion, this class has truly been an invaluable learning experience for me. From finally figuring out how to correctly use the MLA format to effectively eliminating my procrastinating habits, the class has given me multiple opportunities to grow as a writer. I have developed an organizational pattern of success for me to write successfully in the future and have gained the confidence I desired to aggressively handle future written assignments. This class has allowed me to improve in areas I was already competent in and has made me address the areas where I was weak. Learning how to use the research tools available is an amazing skill that will be highly marketable no matter which career I decide to pursue. The foundation I have built by attending this class will enable me to be an expert in communicating with others in writing.
English 111 was different from what I expected a college English course to be. I was expecting to have to read books and analyze the meaning of the themes. I found it challenging to have to analyze different websites and design our own. This was different from what I experienced in high school English classes. This course required that I expand beyond my comfort zone when writing essays. This required that I put more time and dedication into projects. It allowed me to learn valuable skills to use in other courses in college and I learned what abilities I need to concentrate on. I carry with me the abilities to use rhetoric devices to analyze websites, research techniques to polish the ethos of my papers, and the knowledge that I need to refine using other sources of media (i.e. websites, PowerPoints, etc.) to present an argument from English 111.
When we talk about English 1110, everyone actually knows the main part of the course is writing. The goal of this class is to improve structural, style of writing, thoughts and performances of students. During this semester, the curriculum includes essays and topics from many different aspects of different issues which are useful to me. From this class, I had the opportunity to improve my writing skills. For example, before writing a paper, I always have outline, strategies, arranging and modifying as well as finding ideas to improve my writing style in a better way. Before taking English 1101, I just wrote essay with what I think of that time and did not care whether my essay is understandable or not; however, i have been improved for the past three months. When I see a title, I start to write down all ideas and also create an outline and order of all documents in a reasonable manner. In addition, all response papers that I have done during this semester I started to have different way of thinking by listening my friend's arguments, feedbacks or comments, agreements or disagreements. Those group activities from friends were helpful because I started to recognize what are right and wrong things in my essay. From there, I have my own personal opinions and defend my arguments.
With my first semester as a college student coming to an end, I can honestly say I have gained so much knowledge and this has been a major eye opening experience. By being in your English 111 class, I have learned a great deal about myself as a writer and a communicator. English used to be a subject I took for granted because I always considered it to be easy and there wasn’t much to it. You have helped me realize that in order to write a good paper, it is important to have a deeper understanding of the many structures and usages; as well as a better understanding of yourself and your audience. In what seems like such a short time, I have learned about rhetorical knowledge, the writing process, oral communication, critical thinking/reading/writing, and digital technology.
Also, I was able to see how arguments are sometimes so broad that you do not know what way to take them. I believe the biggest help to me through this unit was being able to see where in my writing process I have strengths like authority and logic and where my weaknesses lie like emotions. I feel showing more emotions could become a problem for me when it comes to creative writing, if a have to do it, because I am so used to the template academic and research writing styles. This course is definitely helping me to reshape my writing process and how I look at certain sources. Also how I can tell whether a source is useful in terms of logic, authority, and
