In life, people come across challenging obstacles’ when trying to achieve their goals. College, like that of life, has a variety of challenges that appear in a student’s pathway to their goals. For most college students that are just starting out in the basic classes, such as Mrs. Fox-Angerer’s English 101, problems can arise due to classes being much harder than the prior high school classes the students are used to. Mrs. Fox-Angerer’s class is hard because it has an online portion, it creates stress, and it is a required class. In her English 101 class not only do students come for the lecture hour on Monday and Wednesday, but every Friday there’s an online portion that they must complete. Some of them have a lack of interest in their required classes. When the student does not find a topic interesting in the required class it may become difficult for them which makes the class harder for them. This will lead to lower grades making it hard for the student to catch up as the semester goes on. In order to graduate they need to have a passing grade in these required classes or else they will have to retake the class. In high school students are usually required to take the ACT or Compass test and meet a certain score. When a student struggles to meet these standards it can affect their ability to take required college courses in the time period they had planned for. Mrs. Fox-Angerer’s Fall 2016 Syllabus states that “Students enrolled in ENG 101 should have a score of 18 or better on the ACT, or a score of 70 or better on the Compass test, or a grade of “C” or higher in ENC 091” (Pg. 2). Students who just barely make the grade or meet the score to be in this class may find it a struggle. Many students who barely make it are unaware of the course, ENC 091, before English 101and end up missing this beneficial opportunity. This goes to show that the required course includes many requirements. New students are usually unaware of these requirements which cause them to experience problems. In “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop, the narrator attempts to understand the relationship between humans and nature and finds herself concluding that they are intertwined due to humans’ underlying need to take away from nature, whether through the act of poetic imagination or through the exploitation and contamination of nature. Bishop’s view of nature changes from one where it is an unknown, mysterious, and fearful presence that is antagonistic, to one that characterizes nature as being resilient when faced against harm and often victimized by people. Mary Oliver’s poem also titled “The Fish” offers a response to Bishop’s idea that people are harming nature, by providing another reason as to why people are harming nature, which is due to how people are unable to view nature as something that exists and goes beyond the purpose of serving human needs and offers a different interpretation of the relationship between man and nature. Oliver believes that nature serves as subsidence for humans, both physically and spiritually. Unlike Bishop who finds peace through understanding her role in nature’s plight and acceptance at the merging between the natural and human worlds, Oliver finds that through the literal act of consuming nature can she obtain a form of empowerment that allows her to become one with nature.
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
Over the course of five weeks we’ve had to write three essays (four if you include this one). With every essay I’ve written I have improved my writing process. Having the chance to practice my writing skills in English 102 has made me a better all-around writer. From the beginning of this course, I knew I had a few major issues that I needed to overcome to improve my writing. The biggest being my issues with punctuation, specifically comma splices. Comma splices are something that I just can’t seem to wrap my head around. Although I have gotten better at recognizing comma splices they still seem to sneak in to my writing.
In our educational system today many students tend to drop out early due to the fact of lack of motivation or they can’t be in school anymore. Charles Murray, author of “Are Too Many People Going to College?” states the importance of the educational system in America. He has different viewpoints on whether certain people should attend college or not. The lack of interest in school and learning is playing a major effect on the student’s decisions to attend class. However, many students just attend college for a semester to prove to other people that they can survive college for a small amount of time. Although, this is the reason that many students drop out and are wasting their money for no reason. Having a good education plays a serious part in our life. Not only does it help us get a good job, it also helps us build our knowledge and prepare us for a success future. However, not everyone is fortunate to get college education. People who do have a good education face another problem, which is preparing their academic literacy for college. When moving to college, everyone’s academic literacy is different. However in today’s society, people’s academic literacy does not meet the expectation of college. Rebecca D. Cox states in her article, “The College Fear Factor,” that students struggle in college based on their past experience in kindergarten to twelve grade. When moving to college, students do not understand what their college professor are demanding of them. Students are not put up to speed on how to analyze and interpret text in college. In the article, “The Politics of Remediation”, Mike Rose delivers his experience as a counselor and how five students are struggling in the University of California, Los Angles. Each of the five students have their own problem in college and they relate their problem they have now with the experience in high school. Both articles involve high school affecting students in college, and both agree it’s not the students fault for their academic literacy. Students are not up to speed in understanding the academic literacy skills required in the University system. High school, for some students, did not prepare them for this and the students are not aware of it. Academic literacy is developed differently from all types of school and in my high school, it lacked the experience to help students prepare us for the academic literacy in college.
Everyone is a part of a community. Most people are a part of multiple communities. A community is a group of people that have a commonality. Sometimes it is based on where you live, hobbies, goals, etc. I believe that communities are created unconsciously and are connected to someone’s identity, especially when a person is considered a part of multiple communities. Sometimes, a person may connect very well with their community. Sometimes, a person may feel very distant from their community. The process of obtaining a college degree is not an easy task, it requires a large amount of time invested. In order to graduate, colleges and universities require a certain amount of credits. These credits achieved by taking courses referred to as general education classes. Colleges set these courses to enable the students to “Explore, Discover, and Transform.” The general education courses prepare students to acquire knowledge and skills to become well educated people, that are then ready to interact with the outside world in a responsible manner (“Degrees: General”). There are two core ways that teachers are suitable to teach grammar: deductively and inductively. Both deductive and inductive teaching has their positive and negative sides and which approach is useful depend on a number of factors, such as the nature of the language being taught and the preferences of the teacher and learners. These two approaches have been applied to grammar teaching and learning. A deductive approach involves the learners being given a general rule, which is then applied to specific language examples and learning goes through practice exercises. An inductive approach involves the learners working out a ‘rule’ for themselves before they practice the language.
