According to VeryWell.com (2016) Emotional Intelligence “refers to the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions” (par 1). Emotional Intelligence (EQ), by many people, is attributed to being successful in life both professionally and socially. EQ is believed to outranks IQ in determining the success of individuals in the work place due to society’s increasing reliance on the ability to read people and to respond to accordingly.

Emotional Intelligence has 4 main pillars, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. In terms of self-awareness I feel like I demonstrate traits that would fall under that category. I’m well aware of my emotions and how they impact my behavior. An example of this is when I get upset I try to stay away from those I care about because I tend to say hurtful things I don’t mean and later regret. In respects to self-management I find myself to be a person that is great at demonstrating characteristics of this category. Throughout high school I was a leader in many situation, I was captain for most of teams I played on and was a member of the athletic council. These positions required me to be able to get along with others and clearly express my ideas to my fellow council members. In accordance to social awareness I can say I am great at picking up on social cues that others might not necessarily notice. This test described my EQ as only having basic skills in relation to identifying, perceiving, and expressing emotion. Specifically lacking in social awareness, implying that I’m not competent in observing and analyzing the emotions of those around me. The second EQ quiz I received a score of 63, which was higher than the last but is still below the average. The website informed me that I should consider developing my emotional intelligence but provided no further analysis. This score indicates that I’m lacking in one of the pillars of Emotional Intelligence or a little bit in all the
