What is emotional intelligence? Emotional Intelligence is the ability to perceive, evaluate, and control emotions (http://psychology.about.com/od/personalitydevelopment/a/emotionalintell.htm). While taking the Emotional intelligence assessment, my scores are as following an 8 in self-awareness, an 8 in self-management, an 8 in social awareness, and a7 in relationship management. While on campus today I came across a group of students and two individuals sitting alone. The first two groups of students were sitting in the library. The first individual person was sitting in the hallway and the second individual person was sitting outside at a table. My results for Self-Awareness says that I have a positive and strong sense of one's self-worth. Also, my Social-Awareness says that I am the adaptable and success-oriented type. Your personal attributes can say a lot about one's emotional intelligence. For example, someone who is not participating in a group assignment their emotional intelligence may come across as they do not work will in a group environment. Also .Your emotional intelligence can even affect our college career because if you are really attending college to learn and get an education that will show in how you carry yourself and in your person attributes as well. You can improve and(or) develop your emotional intelligence by being more conscious of yourself as a whole and also being alert of the things around you that can help you succeed in college like the resources. For instance, there are so many resources in college that we have to help guide us through college students be more successful, but we are not aware of the resources which are why we are not getting anywhere, but if we start being aware we can take advantage of the resources that can help further us through our college
As a supervisor in the military, I encountered an airman who had all the right qualifications according to the Air Force, but he was not able to complete his contracted term of six years. He survived basic training and a pretty intense two month technical school, but he only lasted two years in the Air Force before he was asked to leave. To work in the Public Affairs career field, he had to score well on the military entrance exam which means he demonstrated the cognitive abilities – a usual predictor of success. However, he was separated from the Air Force because of his poor social skills. This paper will discuss whether the airman's Emotional Intelligence (EI) could have been improved and the importance of a high EI to an organization.

Emotional intelligence was first talked about , and used , in the 1990’s by Daniel Goleman (a scientific journalist ). Since then, it has been regarded as just important to success in life as I.Q.
In looking at emotional intelligence, this is not a new concept. It can be traced back to Edward Thorndike study of social intelligence (Cartwright & Pappas, 2008). This type of intelligence is defined in “the ability to understand and manage people” along with taking this ability and applying it to oneself (Cartwright & Pappas, 2008, p. 152). The concept of emotions of how one deals with these internally and externally with others was discovered but it was difficult to measure (Bradberry & Su, 2006).
Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify, use, and understand emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, efficiently communicate, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and to defuse conflict. By harnessing emotional intelligence, we can modify our own behavior and our interaction with other people. By utilizing high emotional intelligence, we are able to recognize our won emotional state and the emotional states of others, and engage with others in a way that draws them nearer to you (Cherry, 2015).
The first topic that I want to touch on is the idea of academic intelligence having little to do with emotional life. Goleman states that, “Emotional intelligence is the ability to motivate oneself, persist in the face of frustrations, regulate one’s moods and keep distress from swamping the ability to think.” I feel that academic intelligence gives you no preparation for the turmoil and opportunities that life brings. The funny thing is that our schools and our culture are still fixated on our academic abilities. These articles have proven that emotional intelligence results in stronger relationships, success in school and eventually the ability for adolescents to achieve their future careers and personal goals. An important lesson learned from these articles is that emotional intelligence is an important quality to have in life, not only to succeed academically but to improve a person’s overall happiness. Although some believe that emotional intelligence and academic achievement are not associated with each other, these articles prove otherwise.
