I believe I, Katelynn Stoops, should be considered for the ED Leadership Scholarship for the 2018 National Emergency Nurses Association Annual Conference. When I began my Emergency Room career, one year ago, I had no experience in emergency medicine. There was a learning curve that I knew I needed to focus on in order to make it in the ED. I began reading articles, reading books to improve my critical car nursing skills, EKG intrepertation skills, stroke amd STEMI/NSTEMI regognition skills and anything else I could find to educate myself on this new, exciting field. I have continued to seek out learning oppertunitiesn to make myself a better nurse and employee. I enjoy that nursung, especially emergency nursing, enables me to be a lifeline learner. I feel that attending the 2018 National Emergency Nurses Association Annual …show more content…
Multiple sessions offered caught my attention that would be benificial to our ED. There is a session about "Building Mental Toughness in the ER" recently we have had multiple cases that have been hard on our team, myself included. I believe that extended knowledge in this area would be benificial. There is also a session called "Documentation Bootcamp" we have be repremanded on our charting lately and I would like tips on how to better my charting, this session would benifit myself and I would be able to share the tips with my peers. There are also various sessions on dealing with critical patients; Fluid resusitation, STEMI, Posterior stroke symptoms, EKG course, Intubating hypotensive patients, Stroke outcome improvements and tips on assissting physicians during advanced procedures. All of these topics would increase my base of knowledge and allow me to help my ED and my peers with our nursing care. This increase in knowledge could increase outcomes which would also aid in increasing pt and family
If I can turn back in time, I would advise my young self to join the Kaiser Permanente volunteering program sooner and to skip the small conversations in meetings. Those talks may seem necessary for the first few times, but this communication method can become meaningless since people do not interact on a personal level. Joining the program had supported me by allowing me to associate with various friends through teamwork and encouraged me to thrive beyond my comfort zone.
I will also discuss the plan I created in order to successfully meet my learning needs prior to becoming an RPN, and how I will evaluate whether or not I improved in these two areas. Learning Needs / Goals The two areas I feel I need further development in are understanding the scope of practice for an RPN, and Intravenous (IV) therapy. Also, it is important to understand your role as a nurse to ensure the patients’ needs are being met, and to ensure you stay within your scope of practice while providing care.
When I am older I would love to be a Nurse Practitioner, I enjoy helping people when they are sick and taking care of them. Another reason I want to be a Nurse Practitioner is because my sister is also a Nurse Practitioner.
Essay 1: How will you contribute to the mission of the Nurse Corps scholarship program in providing care to underserved communities?
Growing up, I was never really sure what career would fit best for me. I didn’t know which direction I was going to take and I always ended up pushing it aside because truly, it scared me. Coming into high school, I ended up with multiple injuries – I sprained my left ankle twice and my right ankle once; I also ended up spraining my elbow. This all happened through cheerleading and lacrosse. I was continually going to the hospital and started to realize what my passion was – being in the medical field. My passion for being in the medical field grew even more when my brother married his girlfriend, Yuko. She happened to be a nurse, as well as my other brother who worked as a physical therapist. Though I didn’t know what field I necessarily wanted to go into, and I still am a little conflicted, I knew my heart was in the medical field. One that I’ve specifically looked into recently has been emergency room nurses.
Scholarship, leadership, character, and service are four attributes that define an excellent student. Being in high school, it’s difficult at times to be a leader, show your character, and be involved with voluntary services while being focused on scholarship, but I have managed to do all four numerous times. I am so grateful and excited to have the chance to be a part of the National Honors Society.
What are the circumstances that brought you to apply for the foundation emergency fund scholarships?
I am pleased to recommend Renee Gersy as a candidate for the Emergency Department RN transition program. As a Clinical Manager for the Scripps System-wide Resource Services (SSRS), I have been her direct supervisor for the past six months and as a former manager for the Neuro-surgical Trauma ICU at Scripps La Jolla, I was able to witness her work performance first hand. Renee is a caring, compassionate, and very proficient ICU RN who would excel in the transition program and make an excellent ED nurse.
Trauma nursing is a rewarding career that is financially beneficial, allows you to work in high intensity situations, and is appropriate for people with a personality where they have the ability to remain calm in high stress situations. In trauma nursing a beginner is already making quite a bit of money while being able to do things such as saving people’s lives. It’s a job that involves working in situations where it depends on a person and their team to save a person and it’s important to be to stay calm and respond adequately to the situation. Trauma nursing is an eye-opening career that, if you can handle it, will really enjoy.
By increasing educational resources for aspiring nurses, you not only help students achieve their career goals and dreams, but you help raise the level of care being received from nurses in the healthcare industry. I believe that nursing is a growing field with new advancements that will assist nurses in their line of work now and in the future. I want to take part in that change as I move forward in becoming a nurse. It has always been my dream of becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, and I am determined to accomplish this goal. I am extremely grateful for how far I have come in school and the goals I have achieved. Each day I am eager to learn and discover new things and meet new people who will help shape me into a well-rounded
