The link posted above is an educational website that I selected. This website is over the topic of teaching second graders how to successfully learn multiplication. Since second grade is the grade that I intend to teach and Math is the subject I am the worst at, I thought it would be a very helpful website for my future in Elementary Education. There were other sites on the internet that may have helped me as well, but I felt as though this website did not go to into depth on what exactly to do in the classroom, but highlighted main points to remember to illustrate when trying to teach this concept to students. I found it very interesting that the website went as far as to illustrate important vocabulary for the teacher to use while teaching

I liked that the article was on using graphing calculators in the classroom. I also liked that the article provided information on three specific teachers using graphing calculators. The study detailed what these teachers thought about technology as well as ways they used technology in their classrooms. I liked that I was given examples of real teachers using the graphing calculator in real classrooms. The article provided a refreshing view of technology, as it did not demand teachers use the graphing calculator every day in the classroom. However, the study showed it is best to use the graphing calculator only when it is beneficial to student learning. I would recommend this article to others. Many teachers have a negative connotation of calculators. However, this article helps demonstrate how calculators can be used for good in the classroom. Teaching multiplication can be made less confusing for the students when the relationship between addition and multiplication is communicated and explained. Building upon prior knowledge of the use of addition strategies and incorporating the properties of multiplication, the students can reach a depth of knowledge about multiplication that will make it possible for them to discover the correct product and reinforce both concepts.
Stone integrated digital text into the lesson. The students were all using Chrome Books. Use of the Chrome Books allowed the students to have access to digital literacy. The students were able to access a video and answer questions about it. They could also go through the website making the reading more interactive. When looking at digital literacy in the classroom, Hutchinson (2012) found that some students became too involved in the technology aspect of the time and did not focus enough on actually completing the task at hand. This could be seen in Ms. Stone’s classroom. The students were more engaged in their work when working on the Chrome Books thank when they were just writing on a piece of paper or reading out of a book. But, Ms. Stone said that the quality of the students work sometimes is not as good because they become more distracted when using technology. The Chrome books also provided a good source for the students to be able to easily look back and see what notes they had taken. They worked on the water cycle for multiple classes, so the students could easily go back and look at their previous
Overall, this has been my favorite math class in the math for teachers series. I felt that I truly learned numerous things that will help me both as a math student and as a math teacher. My appreciation for math has grown deeper and I found math more enjoyable during this course. I truly believe that given the correct teacher every student can succeed at math. I hope to show this to all my future students.
Entering my kindergarten teaching experience in the last quarter of school year I had to quickly become familiar with kindergarten content standards and the school’s curriculum. To do this I observed my mentor teachers instructional time with the children and gained as much information as I could about the children’s educational standing by developing a professional relationship with the my mentor teacher and the children. I learned that the majority of my kindergarten children had not previously attended preschool and that this was their first year of school. I found that interacting with the children in social activities provided me with great insight to their literacy, math, science, and social studies development. In reviewing the children’s class projects, school displays, and an array of their work sample along with my mentor teachers year-long assessments I was able to recognize challenging, emerging and advanced content areas of the children’s core curriculum. These emerging and challenging content areas is what I centered my curriculum planning around. “Information about each child’s learning and development is used to evaluate teaching effectiveness. This may lead to changes in schedule, curriculum and teaching strategies, room set up, resources, and so on.” (Bredekamp and Copple, p. 249)
The second step in developing an engaging lesson is to focus on the instructional strategies used to help the students understand the material. It is at this point, the teacher decides what activities they will use to help address the “big ideas” or the “essential questions”.
