Field Placement Summary and Reflection
Summary
This semester my field placement was in Ms. Stone’s 5th grade classroom at Thurmont Elementary School. There were about twenty- five students in the class. I was able to learn a lot through my field placement experience. Most of my observations occurred during their science lesson and then for a short period at beginning of writing. It was interesting to see how literacy was used in a subject that was not Language Arts. There were many literacy aspects integrated into the lessons that I observed. During my observations, I was able to see strategies used for writing, being engaged in the lesson, and ways to aid reading comprehension. Stone integrated digital text into the lesson. The students were all using Chrome Books. Use of the Chrome Books allowed the students to have access to digital literacy. The students were able to access a video and answer questions about it. They could also go through the website making the reading more interactive. When looking at digital literacy in the classroom, Hutchinson (2012) found that some students became too involved in the technology aspect of the time and did not focus enough on actually completing the task at hand. This could be seen in Ms. Stone’s classroom. The students were more engaged in their work when working on the Chrome Books thank when they were just writing on a piece of paper or reading out of a book. But, Ms. Stone said that the quality of the students work sometimes is not as good because they become more distracted when using technology. The Chrome books also provided a good source for the students to be able to easily look back and see what notes they had taken. In this article, he offers a well-illustrated analysis that encourages readers to regulate the use of technology in the classroom. He believes that technology can get in the way of building a strong foundation of basic skills and insists that computers should aid the learning process, not replace cognitive thinking. Gelernter admits that computers are helpful for educational purposes if used wisely. He suggests, “Computers have the potential to accomplish great things. With the right software, they could help make science tangible or teach neglected topics like art and music” (278).
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. In the “The Crucial Role of Recess in School” (2012) article it explains, many schools are beginning to replace physical activity, like recess, with more attention to academic subjects. What these schools are forgetting is that well-supervised recess also has benefits that surpass academics. They help make a well rounded student because recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits to the student when they are young that they carry with them into adulthood.
Recess is essential to the development of children mentally through the releasing of chemicals that rebuild the brain during physical activity, improving their state of mind through creativity, improves social skills, and the risks can be worked with. The ideal recess that children in at least elementary schools should have is a minimum of an hour of completely unstructured play. Unstructured play is essential to children and should never be taken away.

The field placement experience at Silver Saddle group home allowed me the opportunity to put into practice what I have learned while in the Social Work program her at Northern Arizona University. Throughout field placement I have had the opportunity to practice on a micro, mezzo, and macro level and strengthen my professional social work skill while maintaining a ethical standpoint. Field has also allowed me hands on experience to advocate for clients, insure social justice, provide services, and build strong relationships with clients and the community.
Studies have shown that kids who didn't have recess, instead of being refreshed and ready to learn, were brain-drained, as they have lost out on the opportunity to regain the energy needed for focus. (Barros) Many people believe that recess was a waste of time and that it should be taken away in high school, but without it students become brain-drained and do not have focus towards school. This means that recess is not a waste of time, as it makes students have more energy towards school, but makes class a waste of time for teachers. Many students that I encounter before going to the last class of the day or any class say things like “My brain is done working for the day”, “I just need a break”, “ I just want to go play a game”, or “I am tired of sitting all day.” Rarely do students get to go outside and play a game or go for a walk during the day or class, but on the days that they do, after the time outside or playing a physically active game, the students were more focused throughout the

As an educator, and possibly a future literacy educator it is vital to teach students that learning is not something that only happens in school. Learning will happen every day for as long as one lives. Learning happens at school, at home, at a sporting event, at the mall, or on the computer. Learning happens everywhere. It is also important to teach students reading is everywhere and it will follow them the rest of their life. As educators, we need to help students enjoy reading and develop a love for it that will last forever. It is our role to therefore provide the best instruction possible and use assessment that allows children to succeed. Most importantly, as life long learners ourselves, we need to strive to make sure that our students become and stay life long learners.
Do you ever think about how much technology has changed the way we work, learn, play, and even think? Technology is a major beneficiary to society; especially in the classroom where we get the opportunity to learn and grow. In recent years, schools have begun implementing tablets and other devices in the classroom to better student’s education. The use of technology in the classroom provides more of a personalized learning experience and gives students a widespread availability to engage in learning. Technology is necessary in today’s modern globe, it is basically “the pen and paper of our time and the lens through which we experience much of our world” (Warlick, 2013). Technology is not just considered the “internet”, it is so much greater than that. Overall, it enhances the quality of education and engages students deeper than ever before. With all the significant gains, why would people argue that technology hinders students more than it helps? Critics may try to repute the use of technology in the classroom but I believe what really matters “is the way we use it, the context that we use it in, and the learners who we use it for” (Chong, 2012).
To begin with, before anyone can develop an opinion as to whether technology is a useful tool in the classroom, one needs to understand that technology plays an important role in today’s world. However, the use or over-use of technology in educating young children in teaching literacy to young children is a much debated theory. There are many opinions regarding the positive influence technology can have as a useful tool in the classroom, yet there are those, like myself, who also see the negative aspect of too much technology.
Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system.
As more people began to access the Internet through smart phones and tablets rather than laptops and computers, it is not a surprise that they would also want to transform the American education system by bringing tablets into classrooms. In fact, a few schools around the country have already replaced textbooks with tablets and have seen improvements in students’ standardized test scores. Using tablets instead of textbooks is not only convenient and helpful, but it can also reduce the amount of paper wastes in school. However, it is not a good idea to completely transform textbooks with tablets with the current technology, for it can not only be damaging to the environment and costly to set up, but also might not be effective in improving K-12 education in the long run.
According to The Wallace Foundation (n.d.), “It goes almost without saying that kids today are absorbed in computers, cell phones, video games, television and other media-spending an average of 7 hours and 38 minutes a day with the gadgetry.” Also, Richardson (2013) states that “it 's hard not to look at it as great news for kids, who will see growing availability of computers and access as a means to learn deeply and passionately in ways the current system of schooling was never built for.” Talking about math, Sousa (2015) said that “technology use can help students make significant gains in mathematical achievement and conceptual understanding.” (p. 130). Classroom is a new tool in Google Apps for Education that helps teachers create and organize assignments quickly, provide feedback efficiently, and easily communicate with their classes. (Google Classroom, n.d.). Students can keep track of what’s due to the Assignments page and begin working with just a click and can create presentations using Google Slides. One of the advantages is that they can work using any technology, including computers, iPad, tablets, and smartphones. Teachers can create surveys, quizzes or any assessment using Google Forms and its add-ons. Another advantage is that students and teachers can work from anyplace with Internet access. Teachers can use this platform to prepare the classes from their homes, and give real-time feedback to
Students do things like write papers, access test and quizzes, and even visit their teacher’s web page where they find information needed for the course. This may seem easy to students who have always had internet in their home with a computer they can work on, but what about the students who have no idea what the internet is, or don’t own a computer or device they can to practice on. This is one of the key reason digital literacy is important. Students no matter the age or background should feel comfortable using the internet at school. They should always feel caught up in classes because if they don’t know how to it will be taught to them. Schools should make sure students are up to speed and no child is left

With classroom technology students can collaborate with other students and their teachers in and outside of the classroom quickly and easily.
