Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) 1989
The Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR) requires employers to maintain all electrical systems and circuits. Inspections must be carried out regularly to look for hazards, broken sockets, loose connections, crushed cables and wires, etc. You are required to report any defects when you notice them. All circuits are required to be thoroughly inspected by a competent electrician every 5 years.
It’s important to assess the strength and capability of circuits, as well as the insulation. Fuses are used as protection devices.
Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations (PPE) 1992
Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be supplied by an employer to protect workers. For example, you are asked to

Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998
The purpose of PUWER is that it seeks to address, control and prevent workers risk of injury and death from equipment they use during the course of their jobs.
Working in engineering involves the extensive use of machinery. The PUWER define work equipment as any machinery, appliance, hand tool, powered tool or assembly of components.
To protect everybody who uses equipment at work, the regulations require employers to ensure that:
All machinery is suitable and fit to purpose. Work equipment is maintained. Work equipment is inspected on a regular basis. Training and instruction is given to anyone who needs to use the equipment. Dangerous parts of work equipment are guarded as far as reasonable practicable. Controls on machinery are clearly are marked. Machinery can be isolated from the electrical supply. Warnings signs are fixed either on or close to machinery.

1.4 – State why and when health and safety control equipment, identified by the principles of protection, should be used relating to types, purpose and limitations of each type, the work situation, occupational use and the general work environment, in relation to: • Collective protective measures • Personal protective equipment (PPE) • Respiratory protective equipment (RPE) • Local exhaust ventilation (LEV) PPE Whilst working on site we wear PPE to eliminate the chances of injury. We wear protective eye glasses as we are using tiles, when cutting and nipping them sharp bits of tile can come off and there’s a chance it could damage your eyes, in this case the glasses will prevent this happening.
Section 8 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act (2005) puts the onus on the employer to ensure systems of work that are planned, organised, performed, maintained and revised as appropriate so as to be, so far as is reasonably practicable, safe and without risk to health. Section 19 of the Act requires the employer to conduct a risk assessment of work activities and Schedule 3 of the Act provides the general principles of prevention to ensure the safety of employees in the workplace.
OSHA is commonly utilized today in the workplace. After the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire employers started to realize the debt they are owed to their employees and changes came about. “More than 30 labor-related laws written by the New York (State) Factory Investigating Commission, which was established in response to the fire and has been credited with developing a new model for worker safety in U.S. mills and workshops, eventually were adopted by the state legislature(o)”. Some of those laws require employers to have at least 2 exit doors of which are locked from the inside and do not require anything special to operate. Once those doors are opened the audible alarms sounds notifying all occupants of the fire. Fire suppression systems whether they are chemical or water, usually water, are required by law. Labor laws also require regimented breaks for workers which will prevent workers from taking breaks, such as smoking, while performing job related
...lothing and equipments in the industry. These will greatly ensure the safety of the employees and hence minimize the injuries. Use of the administrative control and work practices will also lead to the production of quality products safe for consumption (OSHA Quick take, 2010).
OSHA regulations give full disclosure to employees about workplace hazards. Businesses that produce or import chemicals of any sort must review the dangers associated with these chemicals and have them labeled accordingly. They must also prepare material safety data sheets to go with any delivered chemicals. This will describe technical information as well as hazardous effects from exposure and the appropriate protective measures. Any employees wh...
The importance of an electrical lineman is huge, not only in the community but also in most of the world. Their education, training, and correct use of equipment help them in their different and dangerous work conditions to accomplish the tasks of providing power to their communities.
In the United States alone there is 257 Federal Regulatory Agencies. Each one having their own set of standards, regulations and compliance laws. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in one such agency that exist under the United States Department of Labor. Even healthcare giants like Kaiser Permanente have to be within complain with OSHA regulations or face fines for violations. While there are many things that could harm you in a work environment, OSHA has rules in place to make sure that the likelihood of harm is controlled through proper training, protective measures, and worker’s rights.
They should know how to communicate with those whom are operating the machinery to diagnose and fix the problem. Workers need to know how to problem solve using mathematical and mechanical skills. It is very important that an employee be able to order equipment and stay within their budget. In this job, the employer has to know how to prioritize their work and be punctual while thorough in repairing the equipment. An industrial machinery mechanics typical workday will require the employee to pick up, push, pull or carry heavy objects.
Training the staff at energy facilities, in preparation for an emergency, is a crucial step in prevention of another disaster. The staff at First Energy, the facility that caused the blackout, had inadequate training, according to the U.S.-Canada Power System Outage Task Force (2004). It is important that staff are trained, since they have to handle the generation of electricity. The electricity produced by generators travel at very fast speeds and need to be consumed immediately (Torstar Syndication Services, 2003). This is needs to be looked after by skilled workers, who can balance the amount of electricity generated and demanded, so that scheduled voltages are maintained (Torstar Syndication Services, 2003). They also need to ensure thermal limits in the power lines are maintained (U.S.-Canada Power System Outage Task Force, 2004).
There is a huge variety of different PPE and all of them have their own specific role to help ensure your safety. So, depending on the type of hazard and the degree of protection required, you will be required to use different types of PPE or different kinds of the same PPE. Some of these
As for employees, it is essential for them to work together and cooperate with one another to prevent any accidents from occurring and to not carry out any actions that may be reckless and bring harm to their fellow colleagues. They are ultimately responsible for the safety of their colleagues and themselves. Failing to do so will not only cause mishaps but it may also result in parties being convicted for breaching this act.
Employers have a legal obligation to inform employees about safety and health standards that apply to their workplace. Employers must establish a written, comprehensive hazard communication program to ensure that employees who work with or near hazardous materials...
Employee rights are very important in the workplace (Rakoczy, C. n.d.). There are some laws to protect employee rights such as safe working environment, discrimination and overtime pay rate to ensure every employee treated fairly. All employees have the right to work in a safe and healthy workplace. In some industries, they use the high-voltage of electricity, extreme temperature, the high-speed and noisy machine in their workplace which can potentially threat to employee health and safety. A safety and healthy workplace must provide reasonable daily and weekly job schedule to the employees. Therefore, when the employee follows the job schedule, they can prevent to work overload because of a systematic system applied by the company.
Chemical and fire hazards in the workplace cause serious injuries that in most cases are fatal.
