This course and the text details the need for effective verbal and written communication in all aspects of the Administration of Justice. Oral and written forms of communication plays a vital role in law enforcement. They must be proficient in all forms of communication. Law enforcement officials communicate within their agency and outside the agency. Police officers interact with a variety of groups daily and must effictively communicate in a professional manner. Written communication is done in many forms. This course and text details all written forms in law enforcement and the necessary reasons for documentation to be accurate and complete. (Wallace & Roberson, p. 13, 2013). Good report writing is achieved with practice and the need to improve. Law enforcement agencies follow certain basic principles for effective report writing. One principle is that all reports contain basic information. This information includes who, what, where, when, how, and why. Another principle is that all reports are accurate, complete, and fair. Accurate reports should have correct spelling , proper grammer, and good sentence structure. The principle of completeness includes the principle of conciseness. In law enforcement a report will be verbally communicated by officers to many other people including court juries, department superiors, lawyers, judges, citizens, suspects, and possibly the media. Oral communication skills are vital in speaking to the general public. Miranda rights must be orally communicated to suspects when making an arrest.
