A local leader that I respect more than anyone else in my town is Perth Amboy Public Schools Administrator Edwin Nieves. Edwin Nieves is an educator and a leader who has worked his way up to where he stands now. He served the United States Army, where he learned about discipline, respect, honor, integrity, courage and service. At one point, he was my 5th grade teacher and when I was in high school, he was my school principal. During those years as my educator, a mentor and a friend, Nieves was able to motivate me to always follow my dreams and he said to me, “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire. Nieves one of those people who works in silent, for his people and never for his personal interest. His accomplishments are everyone’s

Making sure it is a good example is the most important part of being a good leader in your community. The Benchwarmers started with the intention of helping a little boy gain confidence, and that blossomed into a whole community standing by their side to fight against bullies. All the children in the end were taught by great leaders, came together, and accepted each other. Leading by example does not just happen in fictional stories though. It happens every day and in reality, anyone can be that leader. The most important part of being that leader is making sure your example is a good one. Whether reality or fiction, anyone can be a leader with a good example which inspires people, schools, and communities to join
Paul Schmitz was the CEO of an organization called Public Allies from 200 to 2013 wrote about his experiences in leadership in the book Everybody Leads. Within the book, Paul describes in detail Public Allies’ goals, missions and objectives, as well as provides real life examples of leadership from the organization. Like the title suggest, Paul’s own experiences in life, as well as in the organization have provided him the experience necessary to argue that everybody (yes everybody) has leadership potential in them. Paul writes that the process of finding this potential within the individual then placing individuals in community leadership positions is what Public Allies is about.
“Leaders manage the dream. All leaders have the capacity to create a compelling vision, one that takes people to a new place, and then to translate that vision into reality.” (Bennis, 188) There have been many visionary civil rights leaders in the history of the United States such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton, Angela Davis, Reverend Al Sharpton and Barack Obama. Recently the most promising civil rights leader is Van Jones. Van Jones sets himself apart from these other influential leaders by merging his enthusiasm for social equality and his passion for environmental activism. Van Jones believes that combining these two issues is central for alleviating some of the issues of injustice plaguing America. In our Communicating Leadership course we learned of key communication styles as identified by Warren Bennis, through his book Becoming A Leader. Van Jones demonstrates understanding of the main themes discussed in Becoming A Leader, such as understanding the basics of leadership, knowing the world, and forging the future attributable to the impact he has made in America through activism.
I stand among many of you not as an average person but as a leader. I have work hard to be right where I am just like people before me such as martin Luther king jr, Malala and many more. As many of us I grew up by the wise words of a famous person and it goes like this “a leader is someone who demonstrates what’s possible.”
Hiram Revels was born on September 27, 1827 in Fayetteville, NC. Unlike the majority of African Americans in the south, Hiram was born to free parents. His father worked as a Baptist preacher and his mother was of Scottish descent. Because of his Scottage background he was believed to be mixed with African and Croatan Indian lineage. In a time when teaching African Americans was illegal, Revels had an opportunity to attend a school taught by a black women. This has been something that has truly helped me grow as a leader in my different organizations. The most influential organization I am apart of is the Texas FFA Association. I am currently in a leadership position that gives me not only the opportunity to have my chapter looking up to me, but the entire state of Texas; the potential of about 112,000 students. Everyday knowing that number, I remain as positively impacting as I can for the students. There are many people who I am friends with through the organization and they are always reminding me how grateful they are to have me here for them when they need someone to express themselves to without judgement, and that's a great feeling to have. I have also learned how to advocate for not just myself, but others as well. Since my freshman year, I have watched our numbers grow just within our
These are people who in one week, not only became lifelong friends and mentors, but were able to teach me valuable lessons about life, friendship, and leadership that I will carry with me throughout life. The group leaders were able to teach me lessons that I would not have gotten anywhere else. The National Youth and Leadership Forum opened many opportunities for me as a young adult and I would not have changed it for the world. The conference taught me not only leadership skills but allowed me to meet people and form bonds that I never thought
One might think that it is a hard task to measure a life worth living. However, if a life leaves a legacy that impacts multitudes in a positive manner, it is safe to say that the life was a life of leadership and impeccable character. A prime example of a serving leader with great character is Coach Pat Summitt. Through her biography, virtues, fallibility and personal reflection from her life, it is easy to conclude that this woman is a great example of a servant leader.
In my life, my grandfather has always been my role model. He valued his beliefs and always abides by his values. My grandfather is a pastor. His leadership position in church gave him many responsibilities. I was never disappointed because he always tried to live an honest life. He was always trustworthy, reliable and responsible not just in church but also for his family. People followed his lead because he was always true to his words; he literally practiced what he preached. Credibility was the basic foundation for my grandfather’s leadership position. His credibleness has helped the church stay
Furthermore, I nominate Father Michael Pfleger, for his compassion, ambition to do more, his courage, his knowledge, his commitment to our community, his vision for a brighter, greener world, and his leadership. I would love to be a legend like him to serve God’s people and have a purpose of living
I’ve always known to be the best follower but not necessarily a leader. Prior taking this course, my philosophy of leadership was anyone who is in charge of a group in order to give out instructions or order. This type of leadership has been adopted by various cultures around the world for centuries. Thank to new emerging leadership styles such as contemporary, followers actually have the opportunity to voice their opinion. I’m hoping to learn new skills that will eventually help me in the professional realm and as well as my community. I found servant leadership to be the most important type of leadership. Komives, Lucas, and McMahon (1998) mentioned that people who dedicate themselves to building communities so they become better places for others (p.170). This is the type of leader I’m striving to
