Keanu Reeves once commented, “When you truly understand karma, then you realize you are responsible for everything in your life.” Edgar Lee Masters's Spoon River Anthology is a collection of epitaphs in which people reveal their secrets after death. Many townspeople’s lives in the town of Spoon River were destroyed by karma. One citizen in the town of Spoon River whose life is destroyed by karma is Dora Williams. She has had several husbands who have mysteriously died, and she inherited their fortunes. She states in her epitaph, “A year passed and one day they found him dead./ That made me rich” (Lines 5-6). This reveals she became wealthy after her husband died. She also adds, “He died one night right in my arms, you know./ There was almost a scandal” (Lines 10, 13). This …show more content…

This is ironic because after having killed all of her previous husbands, she will be remembered by the one who killed her. In addition to Dora Williams, another townsman whose life is taken by karma is Butch Weldy. Butch Weldy is a resident of the town of Spoon River who wronged many people in his life, and fate finally came back to him. In Spoon River Anthology, what happened to Butch Weldy is ironic considering the damage he has done to others. One example is Butch ending up with his “eyes burned crisp” after stealing from a blind man, Jack the Fiddler (Line 13). Another example of karma is while many people wanted revenge against Butch, he was injured by someone he didn’t know at all (Line 21). The last example is Butch left Minerva “growing numb from the feet up” (Minerva, Line 7); he then ended up “with both legs broken” much like Minerva’s fate (Butch, Line 12).
